Today we have a special double unboxing of a highly overlooked Swiss brand with Latin American roots, and the final modifications for my Rolex Submariner 6538-inspired custom made Seiko.
Join me for some initial impressions and my independent thoughts on the 2021 edition of the Cuervo y Sobrinos Retrógrado from their Historiador collection, including some of its positives and negatives.
Next, is an update on my latest Seiko mod and what I’ve changed in my never-ending quest to build the perfect Seiko 200m diver. I also discuss my current watch collection, the need for a watch purge, and my ideal collection size for the near future. How many watches = too many? How many = not enough? Let's find out!

They CYS is not my thing but they do look remarkably well done…..dunno about 6k remarkable but they are nice……the Seiko mod on the other hand….you absolutely rocked that! Fantastic job. Sorry to hear about loosing the cool case back but worth it for the other changes. Really nailed it. Very glad you got it to where you want it. Interesting looking CYS watch. It has a number of negatives but it's s bit of a stunner. I have an Orient Star Retrograde and have to admit I love the Retrograde complication. A box that one can actually use after taking the watch out, and as a cigar humidor! With 2 humidifiers and a hygrometer! Such a classy addition to a major purchase. The tie to Cuba makes it perfect. The watch itself looks top drawer. I also agree 21mm is an odd choice on lug width, and shrinking the case to 38mm would help too, but still a stunning and fun signature watch. Thank you for bringing us something different! PS, I was chanting NH38 throughout the earlier mod video. Spectacular result!

The new Submariner has a lug width of 21mm as well, so there will be lots of straps available soon! Like the Cuervo! Very classical looking! I’d prefer the silver dial over the blue dial version, though. It reminds me of Breguet!

Another great video! Outstanding quality! There has been a period as a collector, 10/15 years ago, when I whish to own a CyS watch. I managed, I don't remember how, to keep in touch with an European dealer that was unfortunately closing at that time, hoping to help him some way to place some of the watches to an Italian watchmaker fiend of mine. Story short, he find (I hope successfully) a solution by himself, and I've never heard him anymore. I was about to buy a "cioccolatone" shaped one. I still like the lugs shape, but I think they're a bit too long, if compared to the case dimensions. Stunning Seiko transformation! Wear it in good health! Cheers fro Italy.

That modded Seiko watch looks fantastic and very tastefully done. The CYS presentation is superb and I agree with your points regarding the colour, lug width and price. For me it would be a great watch to own but I'm unlikely to wear it and that defeats the point. You got the screw from eBay for "tuppence hapney" brilliant! you're showing your age and upbringing TGV with old UK pre-decimal currency, made me laugh. To make my watch collection slightly easier to digest I split the count of the different types separately into different collections as I don't necessarily want to err.. 'release' say a digital for an analog mechanical but I should think about 'pruning' the numbers but I'm not sure I'd be able to do it as most of my watches are worn on the wrist. The ones that aren't don't really have value and were purchased over many years ago when I was cash strapped. These I don't count as part of the collection. See what I did there, I reduced my watch collection count without actually doing anything.

Awesome pieces to be sure. The 21 mm lug with tho... What I've done in the past is install 21mm spring bars in a 20mm band or bracelet. Just a thought. Maybe not for the high end watches but it has worked in a pinch for me. As always cheers to your work TGV. Bravo.

Good video as always. I do own a cuervo y Sobrinos robusto, Churchill edition. It is my first automatic watch, bought it for several reasons, but the Churchill relationship had to with it. Now, to the Retrogrado, beautiful watch, but I do agree that is way too expensive. At that price point most likely I would get an Omega. And, loved the Seiko mad as well.

Tempted to do a similar thing but not with a Seiko but with a Vostok and spin a bit of Hunt for Red October in, suprised though you didn't go undersized on the Strap for a closer match. I'm the oppisite Watch Collection wise, under 20 and definately not enough, Bank currently says no however to adding so much as even an F91.

Deffo consider it, but take you time, the advantage is you make it more unique and special to you. The disadvantage is sometimes a watch is better left alone. Your Seiko mod is so unique and tooly, I enjoyed this thing and the video. The CYS and in particular the blue one appears to me like an hommage (no to say fake) to some grail watch from the fifties. Sorry to say that. IMHO a 6 grand watch should offer a bit more than this. Bye the way. This humidor is a nice touch - BUT - how the watch and other bits were found tottering around unkindly is not appopriate. At 6K I saw a lot of alternatives from Rolex, Cartier (Santos & Tank Amercaine and even Pasha), Omega, Parmigiani and Minase !
