Just love that a former 1st daughter interviewing another former 1st daughter. Betty Ford was a real trailblazer who at 1st was in denial, overcame her addiction, and went on to let the world know there is help to overcome her addiction. Others can overcome their addiction.

@@genevievemarie9427 Your comment is cruel. First Lady Betty Ford went through a rehab program where she overcame her disease. She deserves so much credit because overcoming alcoholism is very, very difficult. I hope you, Genevieve, never have any problems because people might well condemn you. Think about it.

I think of myself as an alcoholic who out of fear never drank. My grandfather, aunt, uncle, mother and brother were addicts of alcohol and drugs. Through intervention only my brother can say he is a recovering alcoholic who doesn’t drink and is alive and well. Now I am dealing with in-laws. My wonderful wife now has two family members with opioid addictions. They depend on her to enable their dysfunctional lifestyle. Harboring memories of being a child of an alcoholic family I find being again in the presence of addiction hard to bear. Addiction is an emotional pain that whole families seem to never completely shake.

Jim Mauch I also chose to not drink & do other drugs due to family history of alcohol problems & Depression. I have severe Depression ever since young childhood & I know that is a huge risk factor for the development of chemical addictions. Many people are so unaware &/or ignore the research behind the prevention of chemical dependencies. You were very intelligent to stay away from chemical usage in your lifetime.

I think Jenna meant to say Susan Ford Bales. Good interviewers normally don't tell the person how they felt unless it's a child who doesn't have words to express emotions. Also, interviewers generally try to ask open-ended questions. Betty Ford displayed courage in revealing a weakness that many alcoholics dismiss or deny. It may take strength, support and other resources to overcome addictive behaviors. What a life!
