The problem with a lot of the younger generation is they wouldn't know a truly great singer if there was s sign with an arrow pointing at them. A lot of today's 'singers' are mediocre but the media play a role in turning these so called 'singers' into being more than they really are. I remember when 'rapper's' first came on the scene and some people actually thought these 'rappers' had talent, when all they were really doing was talking into a microphone. Some of these 'rappers' are multi millionaires, Puff Daddy being one example of many. Yes, there are some recent examples of talented singer's including Whitney Houston, Sia, Celine Dion, Faith Hill and a few other's. Tony Bennett belongs to that golden era along with Frank Sinatra, Matt Munro, Andy Williams, Al Martino and a few other's.

No gyrating, No booty shaking and no skimpy clothing. Motown ladies were so glamorous and wore gowns to perform in. They swayed side to side and sang with strong beautiful voices.

I liked her performance but she was supposed to REPRESENT the genre and that was black people. That's a part of black history. It's great that she had so many emotions involved but she wasn't the right fit. Just as if someone was supposed to do a Reggae Tribute, would you choose a European? No! Because that genre was made by Jamaican's. Yes, it touched many hearts but someone from Jamaica would be a right fit for it. Perhaps Bob Marley's sons, not a European or a Latina.

I’m Asian and I love the Motown era music. So, does that mean I have to be black to like it? Why is race such an issue? I actually saw Jlo as an inspiration that anything is possible. Would a latin award show have a black woman paying tribute to a latina singer? The answer is no case close. Black women are constantly given the short end of every stick. A lot of people of Latin descent don't even accept their own kind who are of a darker complexion. A black woman could have had an opportunity to shine seeing that 95% of the entertainers on Motown records were in fact black. How disrespectful would it have had been if a black woman would have played Selena looks aside that is the same thing she is doing it. My family is from the islands and I live for Bachata music if I was offered a role I would deny it and let them know that a Latin woman should represent it seeing that they were the originators.

Everyone is free to make a tribute Black music is not listened by black people only Open your mind people. It is about inspiration and the love of music She grew up listening to motown music It is her way to Thank motown for the music. Smokey and Berry wanted her to that tribute. It is also show that Berry Gordy succeded in bringing black music in a wider audience and all over the world. She did a great job. Don't let racism take control It is about inclusion. Black people can't ask for inclusion when it comes from oscars... when themselves exclude people who love their music. At a worldwide level, black music is bought and listened by more than 95% of non black people. So everyone can say Thank you if that music inspire you. I leave in France and people start thinking that black people don't want them To listen black music In a long term, that will impact the success of black artists Music is all about love and nothing else. I cant believe people have an issue with her doing the tribute because she is latina. What the hell? Racism won't end if you continue segregating people and making ridiculous rules based on race! There shouldn't be any judgement on her being chosen because of where she is from. Music is for everyone. We can't move forward if we keep doing this.

Anne Jackson you missed my point entirely. We are all part of the human race. Music is for everyone. We won’t be able to end racism if we continue saying things like white people cant do this, black people cant do that, Asian people etc. It’s a never ending cycle if you do that.

Anne Jackson well I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I truly believe you can respect the history of the music, the culture and the background and still be part of another racial group. You continue to segregate us, which I think is wrong and won’t move us forward.

Jennifer Lopez was not the right choice for the Motown tribute. Her vocals are so weak, she had to lipsync the performance. Her performance was suited more for her Vegas show, not a Motown tribute; all that ass shaking was a big fat no. She should've turned it down when they asked, but Jennifer has always been thirsty for the spotlight.

The problem with big stars like Jennifer Lopez is that they don't recognize when they are starting to become embarrassing. Jennifer will have no problem doing a performance like this one when she is 60 and obviously she will be wearing the same outfit and shaking it all about, but the question is will the public be happy to see it?

@Joycelyn Smith, your right not about her about her performance - it was a Jlo show not close to any act of Motown performers male or female. I mean really, did any of the female acts from Motown stick out their butts and wear costumes like that, heck no, quite the opposite. So, yeah people are missing the point and I'd say even you comment about "soulful", plenty of other females move and dress the way she does, nothing soulful about it, more about following what some consider entertainment -

I have to say, when this performance came out I was very confused and on the hate train, but after looking at this again I realized my ego and opinion was out of line. I understand people’s frustrations with proper representation (especially when it comes to race, culture and white wash America putting their spin on things) but no one should pigeon hold someone to a category. Everyone saying that “there was someone better for this”, are absolutely right, but don’t take away from JLO’s heart and character. Or say because you’re ‘this’ you can only do ‘that’.

Why can’t we all just support one another. She is literally saying it was a dream to do this tribute because she grew up with this music. The performance was wonderful. It had a “Jenny from the block twist” she made it her own. I actually liked J Lo's performance a lot. I am a huge Motown fan and a person of color. You need performances like this to breathe life into Motown interpretations. And to be quite truthful you have few Motown Stars still left, so you need to keep the momentum going with other performers. And yes, you need big name performers. Besides, Berry Gordy wanted J-Lo to perform, so enough said.
@dtrn254
@dtrn254 5 жыл бұрын
@Anne Jackson I didn't see JLo being included in the Motown special as a problem, the Grammys may be different because she was the sole representative. But no matter how you cut it, J-Lo cannot upstage Motown....so I had no problem with her doing a Motown tribute on the special. Artistically, she selected Motown songs she liked and stayed true to herself without trying to mock or emulate Motown artists, which would have been dishonest. JLo's performance was extremely well choreographed, staged and balanced for a six minute tribute. The whole purpose was to get a large modern artist to help fill in the length of the show and help support ratings. Berry and Smokey christened it because J-Lo's inclusion fits into their vision that Motown was for everyone.

It is not about her. The black community will have to endure because we have been doing this for years. It was ? and all I saw was the clip. You see what happen with the country song when made by a black man. This is what it is and going to be until the creator comes back. Money , ratings over integrity. Money , Power and No Respect. It is written in the Bible we continue to follow gentiles and accept what ever they do; we will complain , gripe ,march and follow. If my people will humble themselves and turn from there wicked ways I will heal there land. And by far Black people are not going to humble themselves. Victim mentality is done with. Get on your knees repent and ask the Most High to fight our battles. Black People This Is not your home and you will never fit in. This is why we keep being followers. The only one that can give the rights to our people Is the Most High through his son. He is the one that took these rights from us and until we worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. No need to make her feel bad.
