"Disgraced lawyer Richard Merritt faces trial for allegedly killing his mother on the day he was supposed to report to prison for financial crimes in February 2019. Prosecutors allege Merritt brutally stabbed and beat 77-year-old Shirley Merritt to death after she cooked him his last meal - leaving plates on the table and pots on the stove. Richard was arrested and charged when US Marshals caught him eight months later in Tennessee living under an alias."

I just have to say that the camera person is on top of their stuff. Zooming in on the diagram to indicate the corresponding wound the medical examiner was discussing, showing just enough of the wound photos without being disrespectful. One of the best camera jobs I've seen in a trial (and I've watched tons).

He also would’ve gone straight to his mother after they left, to try to render aid, or at the very LEAST, to hold her hand or something, to say goodbye or that he loved her. Like a normal son would do after seeing their mother murdered. The prosecution should have pointed that out to the jury. She also should’ve pointed out that he kept referring to the murderers as GENTLEMEN. Luckily the jury was smart enough to see through him, but the prosecution really sucked at cross-exam. He made so many conflicting statements on direct, and she never confronted him about them on cross.

Such a horrifying event he states he went through but not an ounce of emotion when retelling it. Why didn’t the prosecutor ask him if he checked her for a pulse before he left. He loved her soooo much but didn’t even check to see if there was any hope she could still be alive. He didn’t need to… he already knew. He never contacted his ex-wife or kids during the eight months he was on the run but ran because he was worried for their lives? Just doesn’t make sense.

I wasn't familiar with this case and he seemed a sympathetic character at the very beginning of his testimony, but his testimony and the case itself quickly began to take on Murdaugh vibes. I doubted his story once he began talking about the "break-in" incident resulting in the murder of his mother. The story didn't sound at all plausible, he recounted it without emotion, gave such detailed descriptions of "the perps," at one point reverted to telling the account in the present tense (indicative of trying to remember a fabricated story), didn't check on his mother or dispatch help for her, and didn't call LE to seek protection for his ex-wife and kids---all of which left me without a doubt as to his guilt. Oh, yeah... and the inappropriate laughing while describing his mother's murder just screams "guilty!"

This Prosecutor wants to rebut a letter that the Defense has but doesn't know under what section of the Law? I think she needs to do some pro- bono work or study more as it seems like she doesn't know the proper codes or sections to use. It wouldn't hurt to watch some high profile cases & learn from them either. Maybe where this is being held doesn't deal with much murder cases but still that's no excuse. Thank heavens the defendants ludicrous story is such as they might have had reasonable doubt although I don't. If his Mother had life insurance let's say $500,000 then it would double if she was murdered. He figured he'd serve his 15 years on his financial fraud case then get out live in his Mother's house of sell it collect a million dollars & use $500,000 to pay back his victims & still have $500,000 left over. What a pathetic son this sweet lady stood by him through all his troubles & this is how he pays her back? They will love getting there hands on him in prison it won't be the fun life he was living off of on other people's money. No one will be there to put money in his prison acount to buy stuff bc he murdered the only woman he could always count on like most Mothers! (I am paraphrasing, judge was poised and professional) I expected the non responsive space on my bingo card to be marked off in the first 2 mins of questioning. This man is so abhorrent. He graduates from stealing from the elderly to murdering the elderly yet has the nerve to refer to the mother he murders as a Steel Magnolia? And so rehearsed it was laughable. Also laughable, he claims his probation officer granted him the privilege of breaking curfew for his warehouse job that he’ll be giving up for prison in 14 days yet he wasn’t granted the ability to leave early for his disabled child’s neurology appointment? I bet he didn’t even request it. I’ve got 2 hours left to go in this clip yet my eyes have rolled so hard that I’ve got Forrest Whittaker eye so I think I’ll skip to cross exam if it’s happened yet. This disgusting virtue signaling testimony does nothing to sway me from the facts presented. The jury will have no problem in rendering a timely unanimous verdict.

God, he has NO EMOTIONS seeing all that horrible stuff to the women that brought him into this world. It's just sad. He also was asked why he took his mothers car..... OUT of ALLLLLL the things that just happened at that time you think of your mothers car has more gas AND IS EASIER TO SLEEP IN? WHAT???????? BUT then you said you filled your mothers gas tank up... Why couldn't you have done that to YOUR OWN CAR??? This dude is a lier.

Love how he glossed over the house he and his wife owned with dodgy evasions like “it was gone” and how his wife “wanted to rent” without explaining why he let the mortgage lapse for 6 months until it would foreclose and how he lied to his wife about making repayments. This is a guy fighting to not be seen as a vile murderer of his mother, but he can’t even be honest about his previous lies and manipulations. He even glossed over his previous crime as if he was surprised by the extent of all the things of which he was accused. Pathetic. He can’t even be honest about that, and he surely isn’t honest about the way his mom died.

They just put up the diagram of Shirley’s autopsy and it made me cry while looking at it even before they started talking about it. How in the world can a person do this to their mother? ESPECIALLY since by all accounts she was a wonderful person and mother. It would be easier to understand if she had been abusive or something, still heinous, but easier to understand. She was the only person to stand beside him through all of this This case makes a strong argument against given someone “time to get their affairs in order” before being taken into custody. At they very minimum they need to be placed in a minimum security detention center to accomplish this. Some place that they still have access to everything they need to get everything settled and have open visits with loved ones but still under security where they can’t commit murder and flee. On another note, does anyone else think the fanciful font used on the letterhead of the diagram is out of place?

The absolute lack of emotion he had while telling this awful STORY that happened to his mother is very telling. Love that the judge had to step in and ask him to stop giving a narrative multiple times. If I’m sitting on that jury, I’m seeing right through this guy. He very casually worked all of the evidence into his story about the dumbbell and the knife handle breaking, all without a single tremor in his voice. Imagine witnessing what he described happen to your mother, and then telling the story for the first time and how your demeanor would be.

5:14:44 this is where the most believable story I have ever heard , so revelling and emotional, you can't be serious if you think he is guilty. Nobody can tell the details of the "bludgeoning " of his mother so callously. And the items used are typical of gun wielding monsters. They didn't shoot ,somehow he uses a "dumbell" and left the basement ,went to the kitchen and returns with a knife, all the while still holding his gun as monster number 2 ,I guess waited with the lawyer for monster number 1 to maybe ransacked the home for valuebles. If you think this living son who has to stop himself from laughing while on the stand describing the horrific incident. This poor lady didn't pay 40 Thousand dollars to bail out her son . Well at least back in the jailhouse he will get what he deserves, They have KZbin in the system facilitys.
