WATCH LIVE: President Hakainde removes restrictions on protests in Zambia
WATCH LIVE as Gambakwe looks at the current efforts by President Hakainde Hichilema to remove restrictions on freedom of assembly which was present in Zambia through the Public Order Act.
Since 2022, the Public Order act has been undergoing public comment and is being reviewed. Under the current law, there was a requirements. The Zambia Law development commission has called for public comment in any of the seven Zambian Languages.
What we have done so far
1. We have written to the Police in Zambia.
2. We have written to the SADC national representatives ( Contact coordinators).
3. I have written to the Zambia minister of Foreign Affairs.
Current Public Order Act regulations
1. Notify the police for organisers of any protest.
2. Requirement for the national Anthem to be sang before any public meeting or protest.
3. Restriction on the wearing of uniforms and flags.
4. A number of churches have been exempted from the requirements of the law.
