In this video I repair a VFD Display on a 03-07 style GM Cluster.
Owner of the vehicle attempted to repair the burned out back lighting and accidentally cracked the display.

Finally I’ve found a board that looks like mine. There’s 900 videos of the other style board. I have an 06 Denali that has lost power in the cluster. I’ve read the comments and will be checking for 2.5 volts at the processor tomorrow. Thank you for showing your craft. New sub and interesting to watch.

The 2.5v SOP-8 chip uses a resistor voltage divider to set the output. It's a pair of blue resistors next to it. Reflow those.

Hey Jeff thanks for the awesome video, yours is the only video I can find that focuses on a cluster with a non-VFD prndl. I have a the same style cluster with a dim odometer and am struggling to figure out how to fix it as my board does not have the usual array of what I think are transistors. It has what appears to be a mosfet. Would reflowing this mosfet fix my issue or do I need to replace the mosfet?

Yes the main 12 volt constant, the switched ignitions and the ground.

Great video! I know it's an old video, but I thought I would try my luck with a question. In the comments you answered someone else's question about the display intermittently working. You stated that it sounded like a cracked solder joint. Any chance you might know which joint is likely to be suspect??? Check the 1.2k resistor for fractured joints in the little power supply to the left. Also check the display outside leads.

I'm planning on making videos of all the out of the ordinary cluster repairs, mainly clusters that someone tried to fix and fail. I'm not going to upload any normal rebuilds because there are already tons of those on youtube. I've done climate controls, ABS modules, ford FICM'S and I'm sure many more. But since I only do this part time it can get overwhelming trying to do everything. So I'm trying to stick to just clusters. Good luck with your new business. It can be rewarding once your established and create a good rep.

The black spot is the getter, just like on receiver tubes. It is intended to absorb (sequester)any remaining gas in the envelope.

Have a question for you. I have a 2003 Toyota Echo with Tacg & Speedo which they both work. The odometer reads 0 . The Odo/Trip button and other button that sit out a little from the cluster assembly mounted in the dash. Does this mean the mileage display is bad, the chip failed, assembly is bad? I have solder sucker, soldering equipment, sochip clip along with ability to do more. Don't want to be stumped on this. I have IM-608, Zeus, ADS-625 and wasn't able to see any mileage in the data via the scan tool which I see from time to time but I think this is to old being a 2003.

You have to use color transparency film. But I don't think red is possible since it's a opposite primary color of its native color green. If you use a red color transparency film it will probably look very dim.

My 2005 corvette cluster went dead fuses seem to be okay cleaned all connections motor side and under passenger floor board ....when i turn on turn signals on car they work outside car but no indication on cluster you seem to know what your doing any suggestions would much be appreciated thank you

Lorn I haven't had that year of corvette cluster apart, so can't say for sure. But what I can recommend is to look for fractured solder joints. Just keep in mind if you remove the needles it maybe tricky to get the calibration right depending on the style of stepper motors used.

MY DIC went bad on the 01 Buick Lesabre. When I reset the battery then the whole cluster went bad. I pulled out the cluster. If I was to put in a different cluster with same part number will everything be fine afterwards or do I need reprogramming? Could you repair this cluster including the DIC? How much?

The mileage is stored in the cluster. If you install a used cluster it will show the mileage of the car it came from. If you don't care about odometer reading you'll be good to go.

The 2005, 06 and 07 classic display dims with age/hours (if you're sure the dimmer isn't turned down). I recommend to replace the VFD with one from a 03 or 04.

As long as this new blank eeprom is the correct part number, yes. The x100 can dump a bin file, but you'll need a copy of a good bin file to write on it.

Hi Jeff, i own a 2002 chevy 2500 . The oil pressure gauge flickers and the fuel gauge will randomly go from full to empty. This truck has the 8.1 vortec with the allison transmission. Would you be interested looking at this cluster?

You could have a faulty fuel sending unit. I'd reccomended doing some trouble shooting with a scan tool before throwing parts at it.

The original cluster got destroyed by last owner to cover the check engine light been on. Instead of fixing the car he broke the cluster.

The cluster just needs battery, ignition and ground to power on. When it boots up it resets all needles counter clockwise. On the Honda can you just swap the eeprom from the original cluster to the replacement cluster?

I challenged myself with an escalade cluster that was smashed to smithereens and I have everything fixed now even the lens but I don't have an odometer replacement. The hit it took was hard enough that half of the odometer was just rattling around in there loose lol

Yes besides 03-06 full size the trailblazer/envoy cluster (with message center option) also uses the same VFD. I hope you have a good desoldering tool cuz they're kind of a pain in the ass to replace.

Admittedly I used a combination of a solder sucker and and solder wick. Ended up having to run a couple jumpers because holy shit that solder mask doesn't come off. Lining up the pins for the replacement was the biggest pain in the ass IMO. Thank you for the tip, this is great to knowthat the readily available trailblazer clusters at the salvage yard have VFDs.

I recently had my cluster (03 Sierra duramax) rebuilt by a local speedo shop. Everything works as it should. However after about a month of working... just now I can’t get my trip to reset. Either steering wheel controls or stem button on cluster. Used my snap on scanner and checked inputs. Signal is being seen by the stem on dash. Yet trip will still not reset. Any ideas?

There is a set of resistors tied into the trip button that are common to fracture with higher mileage cluster. A full rebuild should cover reflow in these resistors. I would contact the person that did the original repair and ask them to take a look at it.

thisisme0214 I haven't run into that specific problem yet, but I would start by inspecting and possibly reflowing the OKI chip, expecially the side by the VFD. There are two separate grounds and power supply pins, so it would make sense the chip is split in two sections. edit: your looking for around two 42v supplys to chip.

I'm not sure, but even if you had the number your not going to find much for sale, I don't believe a 3rd party ever sold them and GM sure hasn't. If you need a replacement your best bet is a donor board.

Hello, I sent my cluster off and the said they can't fix the problem. What issue I had was the prnd123 went out but comes on after tapping a few 20x. After trying to put my radio back in I was hitting the cluster with the frame and the whole back needles went out. Do you fix? Also I was told to not get a used one because the milage won't show up correctly. I need some info because I need my vehicle. Also have a 99tahoe that gas indicator is out and can't seem to know how much gas I have lol ...need help please

Timothy Tucker With the 99-02 clusters, if your gas gauge isn't working 9 times out of 10 it's the sending unit that's the problem. I normally have good luck fixing cluster problems other shops/techs can't or refuse to fix.

Sounds like the escalade cluster is a Canadian model. Just don't put the wrong cluster in your Silverado and you'll be fine.

I'm using a 12v adapter. Negative to ground pins and positive to lights, power, and ignition. Some of the remaining wires are for turn signals and check engine light. The rest don't make a difference when hooked up.

I want to ask, the dic menu button doesn't work on my vehicle. I've replaced the button and checked the wiring from the button to the cluster but I still cant access the menu. the select/reset button works so I'm down to something in the cluster that's not connecting. I've checked with a tech2 and all the other buttons indicate they are working but I get nothing from the menu button. Is there another flash that I need to do or is there a resister somewhere on the cluster that I need to check?

Hi Jeff have you ever ran into an 04 silverado odometer scrolling language on the display? I removed the reset button on the board cause it had 5 volts on the side that should be 0. Which would act like the button being held down and causing the scrolling. But even after button was removed the voltage stayed the same. So do you think it would be a diode allowing some voltage to backfeed. Or would it be a capacitor not getting rid of noise? Thanks for your time.

It's a fractured solder joint on a pull up or pull down resistor. Don't remember exactly, just fix any and all fractured solder joints.

ok thanks I tried following that trace. I think they are to the left of the microprocessor. 100k ohm resistor that says 104 on it and to the right it ohms at 100 k but is tan. I reflowed all of them around the processor and it fixed it. Thanks alot. Are the tan ones resister too? They don't have any value or numbers on them. Also do you have a video where you added the transmission gauge for a cluster up to the 2005 before the switched over in 2006? Another question you may be able to answer or not. IF a person gets a replacement cluster that has a different mileage than their vehicle will it default to the new cluster? If it won't switch to the new vehicles mileage can it be addressed using a J-Box pass thru programming adapter hooked to the OEM site? I haven't tried it but have had people ask me. Also would this apply the same for the 06 and later dash clusters as well? Have you heard if it can be done thru the snap on Verus edge or Snap On Zeus where they have the ability to recognize control modules for purposes of tying it to a vehicle even if it were to need further programming using a J-Box pass thru programmer? Reason I asked about the J box is I have one I just haven't taken the time to sit down, download the software from Drew Tech and do a online session with my vehicle hooked up to the OEM site which there is a charge for as we all know from that right to repair memorandum of understanding they did for the year 2018 to enact it. I know it's a little off topic the above about the memorandum of understanding but also I seen something the other day about the patent office or whatever has now granted the right to access OEM data for aftermarket shops as well which I don't know if that's the same Avenue as doing the subscriptions or if it pertains to something else because I am sure interested in it especially if it can get me access to dealer programming at a reduced or even cheaper fee especially if it's my vehicle.

hey jeff i got a 99 silverado and thre prndl display and the mileage display is all togather, and they use to work but kept going off and u could tap the top of dash and they would come back on, but now there completely out. would the problem be in the back or under the top where u have to pop the needles out, im kinda iffy on popping those out.

No need to pull the needles. All the work can be done from the backside. You should be able to find videos on this out there.

Hi Jeff I also have a cluster with no dic power. The main problem was no power to the cluster so I checked for cold solder connection. I found the one that was bad. So once the cluster powered up it blew 2 transistors that are located next to the rpm steeper motor. I been trying to find replacement transistor and I can’t find them anywhere online. Do you happen to know what value they are or how to search for them. Any info will be much appreciated thanks in advance.

I've had clusters sent to me with the VFD power supply transistors blown (from self repair attempts). Sorry I don't know the part numbers, I just pull good ones from off of donor boards. But, when those transitions fail, it takes something else out with it, because when I swap to good ones they immediately fail.

Yes, 03-05 use a VFD. 06-07 use the orange LED's indicators.

Jeff can I ask a question. 2007 Chevy Suburban display went out. I tried fixing it like most people. The new mosfet blow also but trying to remove the new mosfet I pulled a small piece of the circuit board up where the most left leg of the MOSFET goes. So I went to eBay and got a use replacement cluster. My question is about the mileage. Is there some way I can get the mileage off the old display into the new display with out going to the dealership? You can't change one of the circuits that hole the mileage for the old to the new display?

You could swap eeproms, but other software settings are stored in the main micro. Why don't you just send me the original cluster for repair and return the replacement you bought?

If all you did was rip some foil trace off that can be repaired. Not the first time someone did that and sent it to me. Repair service is $100 plus return shipping. Takes me around 1-3 days.

Hi jeff, quick question, I have a 02 avalanche 1500 north face addition and I want to add a tranny temp gauge, can I just install the gauge and call it a day or do I have to program the cluster? If I do need to program the cluster, why? Thanks

You will need to swap out the face, and that means pulling all the needles and resetting them with the new face. It's tricky with the 99-02 air core's because they have no stopping point to use as a reference. You'll need to manually calibrate each gauge. But as far as installing a motor and needle, I'm not sure if that's all it needs, I've only added trans temp to the 03-06 generation.

For just sweeps I use a GM tech2. But I also have a ECU & BCM bench wired for simulating normal operation for all the serial data.

​@@dieselbossbrandon you'll need to power the continuous 12 volt circuit and both ignition circuits at the same time. The bare minimum you should be able to power the continuous 12-volt circuit and then push the trip button to make the odometer show for a few seconds

Sounds to me if your steering wheel buttons are not working, and you have no fuel mileage menu, some one installed a wrong base model cluster in your GM. If you have a base model cluster, you will only have one trip setting, instead of "Business" and "Personal" trip option. Unfortunately if you just bought the vehicle, and if it does not have the original cluster, your odometer reading will not be true.

Hey thanks I got a question I'm doing a cluster swap in my 00 s10 it's the same as this video. How do the 03 Chevy cluster get their oil pressure signal and battery voltage signal if they don't have a wire being plugged in cluster connector? I got the 03 cluster to work in my s10 everything works I repinned everything but still I can't get the oil pressure or battery voltage gauges to work the 03 cluster doesn't have these 2 wires any help would be greatly appreciated!

The 03 full size get the voltage signal through the serial data from the BCM. The oil comes through the serial data from the ECM.

i have a question, maybe 2. Seems how you know your stuff when it comes to the control of these clusters. in my case 2007 Trailblazer LT 4.2L Q1. is there a way to turn off (disable) the DIC. 100% Q2. In lieu of turning off the all DIC 100%, is there certain wires (color sensitive) that are ok to remove from the pin connection that reads (service tire monitor) and (service stabilitrak) I can put tape on the warning lights for these two issues, but the at the message center (DIC) I would prefer to just remove that logic as described above and still keep my Odometer reads and other programmable features. No, it won't be that easy to keep the odometer but loose the messages. What you're asking for is at a software level. This information is sent over the serial bus.

I saw a video were a gentleman took an older base Cluster, and added the feature for fuel econ average ect... Just grounding on one of them communication wires that is already present there at the pin connection behind the cluster. I started to wonder if maybe for each read out, as in my case for (stabilitrak) or (service tire monitor) maybe each communication had its own separate communication wire by colour code. In my mind, how great would It be to simple cut these wires ,, for what I don't want and kill that particular display. IF ever I need to add it back. >Most likely not. Just re-connect Any truth to that? Surely there is a wire that communicates from the serial bus, up to the cluster. Individually. Or is all DIC communication done on all the same wire? For the service tire monitor display at the DIC This will always be on, because I removed my TPMS sensors. I do not want. They are costly to replace, and I honestly prefer a standard rubber stem, on steel rims. *without the message at the DIC For the service stabilitrak display at the DIC I plan to remove this feature 100% by pulling the fuse under the hood #58 I have replaced all sensors that relate to this feature. But the ghost keeps resurfacing.. So, because it is only on the stabilitrak system. If I pull the fuse. The truck will default back to a simple standard vehicle with no anti slip. Never had before this truck, don't need. These are my reasons. IF there was a safety factor involved, I would not dare play around. IF you know, Please share. I am no auto communication expert. But I do no automation. From experience each logic for any PLC, can be separated with individual wires numbered or coloured wires. I am hoping you know what each pin does on this Typical GM Cluster. : )

Vehicles don't use a single wire per warning system. They use one (or 2) shared wire for all modules to communicate back and forth. They use serial communication to talk. You need a software solution, not hardware. You need to find someone that can modify the code and reflash the cluster or ECM (or other module) that is sending the signal.

Joshua Webb I'm not sure I understand the question, no not every GM cluster ever made is identical to a s-10 cluster. If your comparing a s-10 cluster to the cluster in this video, "everyone" is very wrong. They have pretty much nothing in common as far as shared parts.

The cluster park Revere's drive just go out but turn on when the truck first turns on but rpm goes wack. And the survive lights come on all at once but will flash randomly even while I idle.

Well you'll need to modify not only the physical layout, but rewire the way it works. Might require software changes, but can't say for sure because never tried it. And you'll need to buy a new face. Project like this could take a week of R&D and prototyping. If you had to pay an engineer could cost thousands. Why don't you just buy a 06 cluster if you want the led gear select?

Bryan Ace You probably have a 03/04 full size GM. I include taking care of powerless problems when I do a full rebuild. No you don't need a new cluster, it's repairable.

I have this exact cluster, but the vfd on mine is dim and hard to read during the day. If I turn the dimmer all the way down it goes completely dark. Do you think it just needs a new vfd or is there another place on the board I should check? I can't find any info about these anywhere, nor can I find any replacement screens besides using one from a salvaged cluster. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Dioxination 1980 It's typical 2005 with dim VFD. It's safe to pull a VFD from a 2003 or 04 and try swapping it. But it could be a issue with the VFD driver, or 42v power supply. Wish I had an exact answer for you, but I don't.
