There is a guy here from Maine , Joe Holland, and he stays weeks in his Eskimo ice shack. He has a sectional floor that he puts down first to stop the cold from bleeding into the tent. All fits into his small tow trailer that he tows with his Ski Doo. He has a great following here in Maine. His setup is perfect for extended trips ice fishing.

I live in Maine as well. Chuck Porter's videos are what influenced me to buy an eskimo and put in a stove jack. Albeit its not a regular thing I'm happy to have the ability to set up camp in this manner. I was spoiled with a diesel heater in my GFC this winter until the fuel tank leaked frying the electrical in the all in one HCalory. And so, I am humbled. Wood burning is the way to go.

I saw a video of a pellet heater with an oven (oven was a bit sketchy) but it allowed you to pre-fill it and go to sleep for 8 or so hours without maintaining the heat over night.

Cool tent! I highly recommend getting an extendable pole to support the middle of the roof. If any snow builds up on there, the weight will collapse the roof. Amazon carries some that are made for tents and awnings that have a point that goes through eyelets of tarps and there is a round ball that covers it that works perfectly to support the tent/tarp without poking through it. I think through brond has the word elephant in the name. They come in 2 lengths, so make sure you get the longer ones.
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын
Yes absolutely. If you watch some of my other videos where I sleep during the snowy night, I cut a small wooden pole and smooth off the top of it and then pop that up in the middle for the night

And went out the window with my stove pipe using a couple of 90s. I felt this was a better solution because I didn't want holes in my roof or wall.And I could seal it back up With the original window when I Wanted To use my buddy heater.

I wonder how those really big pop-up tents handle high winds out on the lake? Also, putting the chimney on an angle makes it harder to find a wind directional backdraft stopper/chimney cap. Maybe a second angled stove pipe to make it vertical again would work.

Ideally yes. But if you look at the older canvas tents, they may have an inch or more of extra space. There will be some snow/ice make its way in, but the only inconvenience that brings is the dripping noise when it strikes the hot stove.

Most of the winter tents do. Luckily we don’t see rain here for about a safe 6 month period. If it snows, you tap it occasionally and it falls off. Quite easily the colder the outside temps. And the insulated walls help in that case as well
@martinerkelens580723 күн бұрын

Looks cool but without a floor, water can get in, if there’s snow on the ground and you heat the tent what’s it like when the snow melts? If there’s high wind it could lift up but overall cold air will push in from the bottom making it very cold without a constant heat source especially throughout the night when you maybe asleep.
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors18 күн бұрын
Generally speaking, the snow only melts in the vicinity of the stove. The ground beneath is so cold here that the heat that's rising from the stove cant combat it. You have to tinker around with the area surrounding the stove, but if you watch my next video, I explain precisely how to do that
@zfilmmaker17 күн бұрын
@ I’ll have to take your word for it because you’re out doing it, I’m not. I guess you’re staking the tent down and pilling snow on the edges to seal out the cold out.
