I can finally touch her feet, so when she’s a little more comfortable I hope to even out her foot feathers.

What a beautiful and lovely cav, such a sweet, calm and friendly boy! I loved watching you groom him, as my family has always had Cavaliers. Our previous 2 we used to shave down quite a bit more than Link here, but my mum's current 2 have never been clipped - just trimmed with scissors every so often, and matts removed. I'd be interested to see if you ever do a non-shave groom for this breed - where to trim to keep things tidy, and how to keep the coat really sleek and glossy (as ours are always so fluffy!!) Keep up the great work, and looking forward to your future videos!

Tavorna C Cavaliers are just gorgeous dogs! So happy and friendly 😍 Definitely! Annika ah yes! Having some hair left on him should definitely help especially if his skin issues are contact allergy based - gives it a little protection :) He was done on a 5/8” or 1/2” comb if you’d like to ask your groomer for the same clip, or if you’d like to try it for yourself. There's another groomer I've seen on YT who is rough but nowhere near as my fave groomer.

Hello Katie, What did you use on Body, Head, and also behind the ear ? I always have trouble make it smooth between the starting point of the ear and the head on my own Cockalier.
@katiepolar3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mariko! I used a 5/8” snap on comb with the grain for the body and head, and lift the clippers off as you get close to the ear in a sort of “airplane takeoff” way instead of directly up, if that makes sense! Depending on how hairy your dogs head is (both cockers and cavvies usually have minimal head hair), reversing your body length should give you a nice look :) In show rings, cocker spaniels heads and the tops of their ears are always very very short, but in pets you can do any style you like :)

I love the look. I have a ruby CKC but my groomer said not to clipper the fur as it grows back coarse and blonder on a ruby. I’m just wondering if this is something you have done more than once to this little one and what the fur looks like? It would be better for mine to be cut this short I think. 🐶
@katiepolar5 жыл бұрын
Karen Birney hi Karen! It depends on the dog, but yes, some coats don’t respond well to clipping but I’ve found very little issue with Cavalier coats and clipping. Link here has been clipped for a few years now and was even shaved down completely once, and his coat springs back just fine. So the start of the video before he is washed is how he looks usually :) Undercoat tends to grow faster than guard coat, so a clipped Cav may get a softer fluffy texture to the fur. But it can be restored by growing the guard coat back and stripping the undercoat :) Link was done on a 1/2” clip too so he’s not clipped right down to the skin but much more manageable for his mums to keep him tidy since he’s such a grub haha
@cathiematthews13594 жыл бұрын
I was reluctant to cut down my cavalier’s coat as she is a champion. However, we live in Australia and in summer get weeks of 40C/104F Temps. Last year it got up to 46C/114F So, it becomes a necessity. I have now trimmed her for several years. Her coat has thicken, but it’s just gorgeous. Full of bounce and a slight curl when it grows back in the winter.

Hi Katie, when I try to bathe my Cavalier at home he can’t stand the hairdryer so his ears stay damp too long. Any tips for that?
@katiepolar5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jane! Spaniel are the hardest ears to get completely dry! In salon, I dry dogs with an adjustable force high velocity dryer so even if the dogs don’t like the dryer, we can get it over with quickly and as least stressfully as possible. At home, especially if your cavvie doesn’t tolerate the dryer well, I would recommend towel drying as much as possible before using the hairdryer. Pop some cotton wool in his ears to muffle the noise and give lots of positive reinforcement. Keep trying even if he keeps wriggling - otherwise he will learn that wriggling means he doesn’t have to be dried ;) And after you’ve blow dried, you can always go over with his ears with paper towel as it’s suuuuper absorbent and you can even finish with some baby powder brushed through his ears to dry them out :)

@katiepolar3 жыл бұрын
It’s entirely personal preference! Some people say there are differences, but in all my experience working with dogs, it’s the individual dog personality, and some of the way it’s raised that determines its behaviour later in life. Just get whatever you prefer, and you’ll have a friend for life :)

Ive read about cavaliers and I want one so bad, but its kindof funny seeing people comment on the haircut. Leaving long hair around a dog's ears isn't too much smarter than leaving hair in a dog's eyes. My sister had a OES that had so much fur in his eyes that he would walk into doors and walls. I knows its the cavalier look, but the look isn't super good for a dog to have if they are going to get more ear infections or walk into things and end up with cuts on their noses. And saying a cavalier doesn't look cute after a haircut is just a lie. we all know that!! lolz

I used Wahl snap on combs to determine length, I think I used a 5/8' or 3/4" on Links body. The dog needs to be super clean and super dry and completely brushed out otherwise the blades won't cut. And I'd really recommend getting as much knowledge from KZbin and other places first as it's really easy to nick dogs skin if you use the tools incorrectly. Be safe!

@katiepolar4 жыл бұрын
Ingrid Dubbel I don’t think it’s possible for them not to be cute! Haha. Link gets clipped at the request of his owners because he’s a huge grub - he’s forever swimming in dams, getting into prickles, and always comes back from walks with twigs and grass seeds. He gets a trim to make him easier to maintain so he can be a real dog instead of having to avoid all the fun stuff :)?

I never had my cavalier hair trimmed or shaved on his back.. They said it would never have the soft silky texture anymore.
@katiepolar4 жыл бұрын
it depends on the specific dog, sort of a case by case basis. 99% of the time, Cavy coat springs back just fine after being clipped. Undercoat grows faster than topcoat, which results in a fluffier soft overall coat after clipping. Frequent grooming out with a Furminator or something similar will bring the coat back into line whilst the top coat grows back. That’d be what they are talking about :)

That's all the gorgeous feathering on the ears, chest and legs gone. Doesn't look like a true cavalier anymore :(

Hi littleprincess1987! Link is a PET, not a show dog. His mums want him shorter and easy to maintain since he swims, gets into the long grass, wrestles with his brother, and is a regular old dog. Having this shorter clip means less maintenance for them and more fun for him. He’s not a show dog so he doesn’t need to be in full coat :)

He still looks like a cavalier, it’s like women who get a short haircut, do they no longer look like women anymore? 🤷🏼♀️

I would like to have a cavalier, but I don't like those long ears because of the dirt that must accumulate there, can you cut a cavalier's ears short?

You can do whatever you like! Having a pet and not show dog means you don't have to keep it untrimmed :) Some people shave the ears off completely with no ill effect.

Out of curiosity. Why don't you shave first and then bathe? Seems like a waste of product if you are gonna just shave off the hair anyway and then they dry faster as well
@katiepolar3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! I don’t preshave dogs unless they are matted or are getting a significantly shorter length. The time I would save on drying them dogs if I clipped first would be lost during during finish groom anyway as I’d be clipping the dog twice instead of once. When you’re working high volume, a time shortcut that doesn’t affect quality is always good but if you’re working one on one and slow paced, you aren’t as tied down to making good time :)

Why not wet the fur first before shampoo?
@katiepolar2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay! We wet the fur with a mixture of water and shampoo, it helps the shampoo penetrate faster and cleans better than wetting the dog with just water first :)
