My breeder, who has over 25 years experience breeding and showing Cavaliers all over the world, strongly advised against ever shaving my dog’s hair short like this because it’ll grow back thick and curly like the dog in the video rather than flat and silky as a Cavalier’s coat should be. Cavaliers, btw, have a single coat, rather than a double coat. It looks like this is not this dog's first haircut, given what my breeder said. If you want to keep your dog’s coat flat and silky as it should be, brush daily and don't ever, ever allow the coat to be shaved off down to the skin.

What you talking about, the fact they’re double coated is why they say not to shave them because the undercoat doesn’t grow back in properly. They’re definitely double coated dogs. No shade on Go Groomer for shaving that coat. It’s already messed up and would probably be less stress on the dog to just shave that off.

@@GoGroomer The title of your video, though, gives people looking to do a DIY groom all the wrong information about doing it properly. Given this discussion, I'm surprised you haven't added some kind of caveat warning people that this was only done because the dog's coat was not properly cared for and had been clipped very short before. Hopefully, people will read this discussion. I'd hate to see a dog's perfectly good coat be potentially ruined.

It is unfair to shave a cav unnecessarily. They have an undercoat that keeps them warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. The hair will never grow back in properly. If you don’t want to maintain it, you should consider a different breed.

I was surprised how well Snuggles did when you worked on her ears. Cavaliers are known for having sensitive ears and strongly averse to having their ears simply touched, let alone groomed as well as you did. Our pup doesn’t like her ears touched at all. Amy your grooming technique is absolutely perfect. However, this is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel not a Cocker Spaniel. I have owned a total of 17 Cavaliers now and have no problem with cutting their coat but the one thing you never do is cut their face face hair and the dome of their head. Your work on her paws EXCELLENT. BUT please don’t shave again the face or dome of the head. Owners, Breeders, Showers & Certain Groomers of Cavaliers actually do the pulling of undercoat on Cavaliers.
@HejTuNatalia2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Omg this dog doesn't look like a cavalier anymore its sad...I have a tricolor cavalier puppy and I would never clip her coat, you do this only if it's really matted with sth sticky and you are not able to remove it otherwise. Maybe the owners wanted it that way because they cannot take care of their dog with brushing everyday etc. but in this case you dont buy a cavalier but a French bulldog or sth lol.

@@HejTuNatalia it sickens me that these Groomers posts these videos stating how to “Perfectly Groom” your, well she didn’t even get the name correct so that should tell everyone something from the START!!! Don’t people know including groomers that dogs and cats can get sunburns on their skin when you shave them? Shaving a dog does not make them cooler. How about stop being LAZY Parents/Owners and brush your pets like you wash your kids. Blows my mind the pure laziness of people and some groomers.

Thank you so much for this particular video. I had just started back grooming for a franchise after a 7 year break and my confidence was a bit low. I had a lovely Cav booked in for a full clip. They wanted the furnishings kept which I did. He also had a fluffy coat and I chose to use a number 7 on the top line and blend. He looked gorgeous and I was proud. Well the owners went off!! I mean really off. I am good with confrontation and staying calm. I referred them immediately to my manager. They got a refund but kept their next appointment. They are first time Cav owners and the breeder told them to never clip a Cav ever. They were under the impression the coat on the top line was like a drop coat breed. The wife told me I had ruined their dog etc 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ She was almost crying. My manager was on my side. They were a no show to the next appointment they specifically asked to keep but I wouldn’t want to see them again anyway 😳 I know that Cav’s get carded but his coat wasn’t up to scratch and he wasn’t a show dog (I only groom pets) What an ordeal 😂😂🐾🐾

This is an amazing video to watch and a dramatic transformation. The groomer is obviously very experienced. That being said, I would be shocked and horrified if I returned for my Cavalier and found him with this cut. His beautiful fur is a feature of the breed, even if not a show dog. Please be sure your clients know what to expect. Once shaved, a Cavalier’s coat will never be the same silky texture as before.
@cassandranegri20523 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rebecca, I am usually a great communicator and felt confident that we both understood what was going to happen in the groom. I had just taken over from another groomer who resigned without warning and had been thrown into trying to get through too many appointments. I did feel really bad. I didn’t take furnishings/feathering down and left them quite long and just trimmed. They recently rang to book in again but I don’t feel comfortable with them so my manager agreed to do bath and nails only. His coat is still silky which is a relief. Hopefully she will find another groomer soon or even better she can watch Go Groomer and do it at home. I didn’t shave her dog down like most spaniels in my local area get done but the top line was. After this I have been over the top with repeating what my clients ask for just in case.

I have a tricolor cavalier whose coat is long and straight but very fine and thick so he often looks bushy even though I use flattening products. I've always done his grooming and I love the look of the long skirts but it is a lot of work. So I'm thinking about giving him a partial cut this spring/summer but not nearly as much as you've done with this girl. I actually prefer the complete natural look of this breed and don't want to turn my boy into a cocker spaniel look. So using your tips I think I will trim off the top and use the thinning shears to take the weight off his legs without losing the skirt entirely. The side skirts, which would typically graze the ground if I let them, I'll trim those up to about the knees I guess. Also, I usually shave his belly in the hot months but if I go too wide then his skirts look to thin - which is not attractive. If you post replies I would appreciate any advice, suggestions or comments.

Hi Amy, I've really enjoyed many of your KZbin videos the last couple weeks! I have a new little guy (Bailey) Cavalier King Charles and I'm looking to set myself up to be able to groom him. My overall question for you is what combination of shears, etc would work best for the CKC breed? I've been looking at Kenchii and a few varieties seem to stand out to me, namely the T-series, the Five Star series and the Shinobi series. Your Sapphire series with the even handle curved shear is nice since it can be used inside or outside (good versatility!). Kenchii makes a nice slicker brush and I will definitely be getting one of those. The Kenchii rakes look very nice for carding but I'm not sure if a 40 tooth or a 23 tooth would be best for the CKC breed? Kenchii is running a Black Friday sale this weekend and I'm hoping to order some stuff soon. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Again, many thanks for the videos 🙂

And my Cavalier doesn't even have that much undercoat like Snuggles does. Thank you for sharing your techniques with us!

I tuned into you video from time to time. It has been extremely helpful. Thank you for sharing you talents on youtube. I to have a king charles. And have been grooming him since the start of pandemic. My question is how do you cut the stomach are? With clipper or the blending scissors. My lovely dog Jasper loves to rollin dirt and or anything muddy it is easier to have the under body short.

Hi Amy, I'm not a professional groomer, just a dad to a wonderful Cavalier King Charles youngster. Specifically, I'm wondering if I should just get a Kenchii Level 3 (Shinobi or other?) 46 or finer blender or if I would be better off getting a Level 2, 3 piece set (fine blender, curved and straight shear)?
@GoGroomer2 жыл бұрын
All you need is a level 1 or 2 straight and blender.

@@GoGroomer Thanks Amy, Kenchii was having a good Cyber Monday sale so I picked up that level 2, T-Series set along with a Flash5 clipper (for the sanitary grooming), a slicker brush, a boars hair brush, a comb, and that 23 tooth rake you suggested! I'll be set to keep Mr. Bailey looking good. I've enjoyed watching many of your videos and I like how you interact and have a really sweet time with the dogs, you really have a passion for what you do and it not only shows, its appreciated! Thanks again 🙂

I would like to say first off that I do not recommend shaving a double coated dog (yes I know, 🙄), but that being said, there are times when it's just necessary!! Carding and stripping is wonderful and works, but sometimes our little *spayed* Cavaliers coats change after being spayed and it becomes more course and frizzy/crazy. I know my girl's did! And she believes she's a Labrador. Always wants to be in the water, rooting around in the dirt, running the trails or playing fetch. Needles to say I have a Cavalier who constantly comes in with new mats. Plus she has Chiari-like malformation with Hydrocephalus, so grooming her is painful for her. It's also horribly painful for me as I have become ill. So yeah, I might have to buckle down and partially shave my girl because it'll save us both some pain and suffering. I did just order a greyhound carding knife and I'm hoping it works for us!

I have a problem with my dog, I bought a cavalier but from the beginning it seemed strange to me because it had a lot of hair on its face, cavaliers normally do not have much hair on their faces, and I wanted to know if there are cavaliers with hairy faces
@GoGroomer2 жыл бұрын
Not hairy faces. They can grow a fuzzy layer on their muzzle but not always.

I have a TriColor Cavalier and she has never had her hair cut off. We trim her feet and ears once in a while. Never like this. The beauty is in their hair! I was told that aren’t supposed to be GROOMED like this. They need to be Clean and only what is needed as far as trimming.

Please read the breed standard. "Feathering on the feet is a feature of the breed. No trimming or artificial coloring of the dog is permitted. However, it is permissible, and often desirable, to remove the hair growing between the pads on the underside of the foot."
@GoGroomer3 жыл бұрын
I am quite aware. This is a pet trim due to the an undesirable coat that doesn't match breed standards. Often caused by non-selective breeding.

No,its NOT on drugs! The Cavalier is very receptive to someone who shows it compassion and comfort. If you arent a total jerk your Cavvy loves your attention and will show that by showering you with affection.

Cavalier King Charles by AKC don't get groomed, but if you do their are know for the long hair on the tail. That should be just brushed out.

I love your videos! I own a groom shop and have an experienced groomer working for me and I am learning a lot, but can I ask you how you became "certified"? I have heard there is no certification, but I would really love to further my education and become certified if there is a way. Thanks :)
