As someone who has been playing cello for five(ish) years, you are doing really well (a lot better than me when I started)! I suggest to develop yourself on your own, use some AMEB syllabus books - they are good for scales and techniques and really helped me out! I have never done an AMEB exam and I pursued Suzuki through to book 8, but the issue with Suzuki that I find is that if you only do that on its own, then you miss out on emotion/making your coordination better and that is something that I regret. Some comments/tips! - Your bow hold is so much better than mine lol. I completely gave up on my bow hold after a while but PLEASE DON’T DO THAT!!! Every practice, check your bow hold/position etc - If the metronome is difficult for you, then I suggest playing scales with a metronome which you are familiar with. It really helps in the long term! - I don’t know if you are, but maybe practice while looking at a mirror: It makes you conscious about posture. From personal experience, posture makes a huge difference to sound - Practice everyday: even stopping for one day can ruin everything you worked for - Listening to your Minuet II - amazing job! Just hearing you play it was such a throwback. It seems that you are struggling a little to make your staccato (short notes) flow which is exactly what that piece is trying to teach you (other than positions, etc). You’ve probably improved a lot by now, but if you notice something wrong that your long notes (legato) are choppy or your staccato notes are not fluent, then just practice that! Hold a long note for a few seconds on an open string or do staccato on an open string - it will help you a lot - Record yourself and listen to yourself play. I honestly hate hearing my cello playing, but you need to force yourself through that torture! Then you can see if your position is wrong, if your fingers are stiff, hear what notes are wrong, etc. It will help a lot - Never stop! I stopped for like 6 months a few years ago because it became so stressful and frustrating. I am so glad I never quit though You are absolutely killing it!

As a cellist, sometimes what helps me when it comes to the metronome confusion you spoke about, I think counting the best out loud is a great way to learn how to use the metronome and tapping your foot too! Just start slowly and let the process do it’s thing and I bet you’ll be using a metronome in no time and not even think about the beat sound it makes ♥️❤️ you have a nice cello btw I have one very similar and if it’s anything like mine you probably like the warmth the lower strings have and the brightness of the upper strings :)

I beg my father to buy me one a long time ago, I am ashamed but I hope I can get back before the year ends. I'm turning adult in 3 months, so like I hope I can make time. Getting old makes you regret things + still explore and pursue stuffs for yourself. On the other hand, I've been playing the piano for consistenly for 3 months now :) self-studying, after quitting a long time ago. Sooo I know I can do it!! I have limiting beliefs but I hope I can get through them, I am ashamed for sounding like a goose on the cello back then. And thank you for this one. It inspires a lot of late learners, and I hope everyone who watches this, makes plan to learn, and someday soon could play their favorite song. My goal is Bach's Cello suite no. 1 and Saint-Saëns The Swan. I'm in love with the sound that the cello makes. Playing an instrument is so beautiful.

Pretty good! I’d definitely say keep working on the bow hold, however it’s gotten a lot better through the video so I think it will just continue to get better. Also another tip is when your using the bow don’t move your whole arm to move the bow across the string, work on only moving the elbow and down to play with the bow. Also pressing down on the strings didn’t seem to hard on the fingers at first, however it will get a lot more painful expessially while doing chords and shifting which come later in learning cello. But overall pretty good! I started cello when I was 9 years old so I’ve been playing for quite a while now, but good job!

Hello, congratulations on starting to learn! My teacher uses the Suzuki books in unison with some other books so I wouldn't say I'm purely learning with the Suzuki method, but I do use Suzuki as part of my learning and practice. So I did learn notes, but honestly it's all a process and just takes time. @Lily-wd7dz3 жыл бұрын
I haven't played guitar except messing around for a bit on a cheap guitar, but its pretty different. Honestly, I feel like cello hurts a lot less to play (especially on the fingertips, mine have almost no calluses after 7 months), so if you're used to contorting your fingers to play chords and such on guitar it atleast won't hurt or require as much flexibility. Most of the difficulty is in bowing correctly. The muscle memory for the location of notes without frets comes over time and isn't too difficult. Your intonation can get pretty decent just by holding your left hand in a consistent shape.

Hi Aaron, Thanks for sharing your progress. I also signed up for cello lessons next week. So excited! I will also rent a cello in the first months, but I want to purchase my own at some point. What's your experience with the one you bought? Would you recommend it to a beginner like me?

Well done to you. I have respect for your persistence and motivation. You're doing great and please keep going. The world definitely needs more cellists. I remember how I used to watch my left hand to place the notes accurately...even with stickers🤣🤣 but I'm sure by now you are relying more on your ear than watching your LH. Just remember that's it's a journey...YOUR journey at your pace. In the end we all make music for ourselves first. Keep it up!👏👏👏

I've made that "arghbrogh" noise so many times!!!! I started learning at 55, and I'm 57 with zero musical experience. I can honestly say, after daily practice and weekly lessons, I'm just starting to get it. I can read some and am on B major scale, just having learned E major finally. It took me a month. I'm never giving up. Also, you know what's really fun to practice? Sea shanties. No lie. They are repetitive, basic string crossings, and immediate gratification, because they practice everything... rhythm, intonation, dynamics, and slurs.

You sound great! I have been learning cello for 3 weeks so far, and I struggle the most with my bow hold and playing comfortably on the A string. Looking forward to being more comfortable with it like you had, and wish you the best in your cello progress!
