Timur said in the interview afterwards that he had seen Nf6 but thought trading knights was OK for him, correctly. I would like to suggest the Shankland-Xiong game in round 3 as well, as that was insane from start to finish. 14 blunders in total between both players over 41 moves.

In one of his endgame DVDs , GM Dr Karsten Mueller with tablebases shed new light on Q vs R. Most significant details: perfect defense includes separating rook from king. Some hard counter-intuitive maneuvers are required from winnign side to deal with that. I think he mentioned some successful example(s) from GM practice.

I couldn´t belive that White could win this position. Impressive technique by So with Q vs. R. About your story with Walter Browne. I remember a story from the early days when the first endgame databases came out. I don´t know if this was a rumor or true. Some GMs tried winning this endgame against the database. And only the Polgar sisters could win under 50 moves.

So is the kind of player who can sill create problems for the opponent when the position seems barren.

Timur was 2600 last year ! He's quite under rated. Xiong and Sevian are very strong players as well.

Much appreciated this video, GM King... how you explained the initial positional evaluation and So's technique throughout. I'll be wanting to try that Q vs R technique against a computer now myself! I was confused for a moment when you were explaining how So repeated the zugzwang technique across ranks - I think you meant files? At the start of the video you mentioned that you were going to show a couple of endings from round 2 - what was the other one? Although truthfully, this one was more than enough to chew on for a while!

Yes, I meant files :) I'll be looking at Sevian-Liang which features some beautiful and unusual tactics.

Walter Shawn Browne didn't duff up the computer too badly even on his second attempt. He captured the rook on the fiftieth move. Walter Shawn Brown shouldn't be blamed for botching his first attempt with queen versus rook against Belle. In those days, "book theory" was that Black had no way to put up any resistance. Walter Shawn Browne would have expected to win the game as easily as with a bishop and a knight against a king. Instead, there are two defenses that are very hard to break down, and of course the computer played perfectly.

10:30 I thought the 'fortress' technique consisted of oscillating your rook between f5 and d5, keeping the king back on the 2nd and 3rd ranks (from black's point of view)....
@rolandkensdale1889
@rolandkensdale1889 5 жыл бұрын
I thought this too - just tried versus Fritz. Black cannot hold the King position and has to break formation as in the game. For example: (59... Rd5 60. Kf3 Rf5+ 61. Kg4 Rd5 62. Qf8+ Kd7 63. Qf7+ Kd6 64. Qe8 Rf5 65. Qd8+ Ke5 {20} 66. Qe7 Kd5 67.Qc7) 67. Qc7)

Fundamental Chess Endings: it is a draw (fortress) if the pawn is on the 2nd rank as Q doesn't have space behind the pawn. Wesley knew that it wasn't a fortress when he gave up his Rook on move 51! The end of this game is very elegant.

I didn't say it was a fortress that could be maintained, but that this is the only possible defence that Black can try. However, Wesley's technique was excellent and he cracked it.

Sir Danny what if the black move using only rook Rd5 and Rf5 if the king is not been check by the white queen. I think its a draw

Or instead of just being a gentleman he didn’t watch out for the horse, got addicted and Wesley’s method-one shot ended it.
