The 50-move rule would have occurred at 137, not 127 . . .

This is the third time Caruana has had this endgame in a tournament game. The first time was as White against Peter Svidler in the 2016 Candidates tournament, and the second time was as Black against Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the 2018 Chess Olympiad. Svidler and Duda defended correctly for the full 50 moves and drew with the weak side.

* Caruana has 50 moves to win the rook, not necessarily mate. Also, I don't understand why he takes right away on f6 and doesn't play Kf4 first

Thanks. I have no clue of this endgame. My nightmare is that I have to hold this position to tie a team match :-) It´s interesting that this endgame appears quite often. I have seen this in many games. I think 20 or more years ago there were exceptions in the 50 move rule. In some positions one had 75 moves.

While you're covering the US Championships, any chance you could go back and do Liang vs. Akobian from round 6? I know it was a couple rounds ago, but it was such a fantastic game! I'd also enjoy seeing you cover some of the games from the women's section if you feel like it.

So fascinating. Daniel, is this the kind of endgame that GMs would practice from time to time, or is it the kind of thing that comes up so rarely that they run on instinct when it happens?

It would have been enough to throw in some checks for example at 9.14 Rh4+ and then check again and here they are the two missing moves...

These endgames from the US Champs have been great! I've come to think solid chess strength comes from endgame study more so than any other aspect of the game. Need to calculate better? Need to work on tactics? Need to nurture positional chess? Endgames ftw.

Sort of a swindle-grind win by Carlsen--oops Caruana. Of course a win is a win and Fabi will take it, as they say. Sevian's win v Robson in this round was more scintillating.

This is carlsened. Theoretically drawn position, then blunder and win. On the other hand I'm totally disagree with second rank defense, I always taught king goes to center in the endgame and there is the hardest to check mate with a few figures

Why did Black not play Rh6 directly instead of Rh1? at 10:36
@michaelwilder5614
@michaelwilder5614 5 жыл бұрын
Atri, you are absolutely correct - 124...Rh6 would have forced white's resignation 1 move earlier. In fact, I believe Maurice Ashley & Yasser Seirawan made a similar mention in the live broadcast when Fabi played 124...Rh1 first. Although of course that 1 more move has no impact on the final score whatsoever.

Wrong statement. Rook and Knight vs. Rook is a theoretically drawn endgame, that should be drawn by any strong GM playing the weak side. Rook and Bishop vs. Rook is a theoretically WON endgame that should be won by a strong GM, although it is very difficult to win, as Caruana himself experienced when he failed to convert it against Svidler in the 2016 Candidates. That shortcoming, which probably cost him the ticket to the WCh match, was harshly criticised by Kasparov, who pointed out that this endgame had already been explained by Philidor over two hundred years ago, and that it was unforgivable for a world class player not to have the skill to pull the victory off. As Dany King said, Fabi must have done his homework, and this time he knew how to proceed.

@@luismiguelcasal9162 Long of an effort for someone who did not listen to video above. Or does not believe it? Anyway, check Wikipedia, R+B vs R is a theoretical draw. Some minor special positions with forced win are exceptions.
@luismiguelcasal9162
@luismiguelcasal9162 5 жыл бұрын
@@strong8705 Well, I listened. My comment was not accurate, according to Wikipedia: 'Computer endgame tablebases show that 40.1% of the legal positions with this material are theoretical wins, but that includes many unnatural positions that are unlikely to occur in games. Edmar Mednis estimated that less than 4% of starting positions that occur in games are theoretical wins'. Anyway, I recognise my mistake.
