GM made a mistake with the Blazer nameplate. Should have remade it into a modern version of the original not a lame compact SUV.

I agree with that. They shoulda come out with a true off-roader called the Blazer that could compete with the Wrangler and the Bronco. I like somebody's idea here that the current "Blazer" shoulda been called the "Nomad".

Toyota has the Land Cruiser, the Prado, the Tacoma/Hilux, the Fortuner, th LC70 the 4Runner, the Lexus GX etc... i gotta agree, toyota is slaying the off road suv market and they kinda have dominated it for a long while w the land cruiser/gx in terms of overlanding. the fact that xoverland has toyota as their sponsor says alot, and they did get the 1st trailhunter tacoma in the US. toyota even tried to trademark the name overlander for the gx but had to settle for overtrail. if you want to see this rig all decked out to what it could be check out the jaos edition. its pretty sweet. the 4runner has done well but wrangler and bronco have surpassed it. starting w the top dog two rows we have the discovery, ineos, and gx550. the gx will sell well vs ineos bc it is the most practical daily driver. not many people will take their discoveries off road bc they are luxury crossovers now kind of like the jeep gc. toyota has every price range covered w rav4trd in the 30s, 4runner in 40s, land c in the 50s, sequoia in the 60s, and gx550 in the 70s+. they could even compete directly w a two door bronco or wrangler and bring back the fj. ineos is a true overlander bc it has solid axles and a front locker but i think its more at home in say africa, the outback or the desert but anywhere really bc it can go anywhere. id still rather have a gx overtrail even though it does not have a front locker or build an expedition sxt two row custom timberline in that size for american byways. i think the landcruiser will do well vs jeep gc bc its a smaller 2row body on frame hybrid. the grand c is not a good base for offroad though it has quadra d2 but its not all that modifiable like a landcruiser most likely will be. the biggest tires you can put on it are 265/65/18 which are like 31.5" tall. im sure the land c will fit 265/70/18s wo a lift. the new 4 runner will also do very good in sales vs the wrangler and bronco bc of price, practicality for offroad families, and mod capability for those whose wanting to take it a step further. with the exception of bronco and wrangler it seems like the american brands are falling behind in terms of offroad suv prowess, while the focus has been on trucks. more than good there. im sure the timberline will come back eventually in the refreshed explorer but its still a crossover. what jeep really needs is a 4runner fighter. a new budget, body on frame, ifs, steel spring, v6 cherokee? an suv geared for offroaders to build on yet still family friendly in stock form. something in the 40k price range of course w a bunch of other offroad trim or pkg goodies like lockers, 4low, and skids.

This could be an absolutely huge year for Toyota in the off road space. They went from having multiple models being pretty dated for 2024 to new tacoma, new landrover, and the imminent announcement of the 4runner redesign. If they get the price right on the 4runner, they are going to make a killing in this space since Ford and especially Jeep have gone price crazy. Nice review. I always thought the 4Runner competed against the Bronco and the Jeep, all three are competent off road vehicles that are body on frame and designed with off roading in mind. Plus, the aftermarket support is enormous. I wouldn’t even consider the Explorer as an off road vehicle. It’s a fantastic family hauler, the AWD is fine for light off road work, but it doesn’t have the ground clearance the Jeep, 4 Runner, or Bronco offer. Plus, it’s a unibody, not a body on frame. I my mind The Explorer doesn’t even compete in the off roading category.

These truck manufacturers do a great job “romanticizing “ off road capabilities that 99% of us will never use. The commercials make people fantasize about the freedom of the outdoors. To me, as long as a vehicle can handle snowstorms and maybe a little mud, I’m good. However, I did use 4 low and lockers in my Tacoma to get me out of a blizzard one time in 8 years. Was nice to have , but I think a quality ride on the road is more my focus now

Ok, but, the problem I see is that Toyotas big advantage has been their durability. They maintained that durability and reliability by staying with 20 year old technology. Now they have modernized their Engines and transmission. I’m already hearing stories from Toyota mechanics about how many problems they are seeing with the new drive train. Ford is also fighting problems with the Engines and Transmission in their trucks and Broncos. There is talk of recalls on their turbo engines. Jeep. As long as you stay away from the 4XE and stick with the 3.6 V6 , you should be in fine shape. I have several friends that drive the older V6 4 runners. I drive an older Grand Cherokee with the 3.6 and 8 speed automatic. My GC is trail rated. I have more power, better ride, much better gas mileage. And can match them off-road without breaking a sweat.

That 3.6 is okay, I would not say you will be good. I currently have one. Runs okay, but needs the lifters replaced at least once a year. Terrible design. Not to mention dang electrical issues. Ground faults. Still love it and looking at getting a Gladiator. My wife though does not trust any Stellantis product, so she got a Bronco. Has been great so far. I think a lot of times these issues get blown out of proportion by online creators trying to get clicks. Toyota should be fine.

What problems is Ford having with Bronco engines and trans? They had one problem with a small sample of 2.7s that got a bad run of valves. The 2.7 is the volume selling engine across the lineup with very little problems. The 10 speed is in just about every Ford and there are no major issues.

Jeep needs a large automotive company with a good corporate philosophy and solid engineering behind it to keep the brand alive.
