I had my 1st communion in 1972. I actually hated the taste of the wine. I almost spit it out. Of course most people giggled. My very Roman catholic grandmother was embarrassed. Our local Bishop was there. He told my grandmother that me not liking the taste of the communal wine could be a good thing when I'm a teenager. I still don't like wine. But, one of my younger sisters a few years later chugged the whole thing.

It looks and tastes like wine but its essence is actually changed into the "Blood of Christ". Which is why the priest will always say "Blood of Christ" as the chalice is offered for Communion. Obviously, wine is needed for Mass which is our Catholic way of worshipping God but we believe it stops being wine and becomes something else (the saving blood of the Son of God)

It was much worse than that when I was growing up; we were forbidden to touch the Eucharist (wafer, cookie, biscuit -- which had been magically transformed into the actual flesh and blood of Christ [transubstantiation]) with our hands. Only the priest could touch it, and so when it was your turn to receive Holy Communion, you'd open your mouth and the priest would place it on your tongue. Yes, with his bare fingers. Yes, sometimes, you'd get a taste of finger along with the wafer. Yes, sometimes his finger was wet, from... well, you get the picture. There were other gross things, rituals for certain feastdays throughout the year -- like going through a processional to the altar, where there was a large crucifix lying, and you'd have to kneel and kiss its feet. I remember seeing plenty of lipstick prints as I knelt... (*shudder*)

Absolutely. :) This reminds me of once going to my friends apostolic church. They speak in tongues. Everyone walks to the front, so i did. Everyone is putting their arms out, i did.
