Strangers Band Together to Help Save Unconscious Driver

It was a frightening scene in Boynton Beach, Florida when a car drifted across a busy intersection into oncoming traffic. It was a medical emergency; the woman in the driver’s seat was slumped over the steering wheel. A woman who knew the driver sprinted to help her, but she couldn’t stop the runaway car alone. She waved to other drivers, who hopped out of their vehicles to lend a hand. Together they were able to stop the car and help the driver.

I took a class in college and I remember reading that you have to shout to strangers for help, if you don't they'll go right past you assuming it's not that important. Notice the slight delay in people getting out of their cars to help. If you don't actively ask for help you get what's is referred to as the 'bystander effect'. It occurs when the presence of others discourages an individual from intervening in an emergency situation.

Milo X: I think it’s a little more than that. I think it’s that somebody has to realize that something’s wrong. When the first person signals this is not just somebody who’s trying to sneak out to the intersection to catch the light change, if so many people do, then people were in a position to offer their services. But you’re certainly right about that first woman being the one you want at your side in an emergency. Because she’s observant enough to see what’s going on right away, and quick thinking enough to know what to do in the moment. I hope she’s got a friend as good as she is to those around her.

thats what i was thinking too. the two guys in the front of the car was putting themselves at risk. if the lady suddently had a muscle twitch and nudge the accelerator it would have been messy.

i helped out some people in traffic who didn't a health problem but a car problem like a runaway diesel engine that couldn't be turned off and started to smoke like a volcano and spread a dangerous cloud of smoke over the highway. So i stepped in their car, put it in 5th gear, slammed the brakes and let the clutch come up wild so that the engine stopped. When that was done i wished the owner good luck and i moved on, and don't see myself as a hero because it's just a mandatory to help people in need, specialy when your own life is not in danger at all. Now when your own life is at risk, then it's a different story and then you're a true hero.

I know someone who died this way. He lost consciousness behind the wheel, I can't remember from a seizure or what, and he was killed in a collision, leaving 5 children and his wife behind. Very tragic. This is just a miraculous save.
