Erick Scott knows first-hand what it's like to suffer from PTSD. He was paired with a special service dog to help him combat his anxiety. He was amazed to see how his dog, Gumbo, reacted when he became agitated.

For people who are confused: 2:07 is when Gumbo responds. He hears his breathing start to get ragged (or maybe he was picking at his fingernails or bouncing his knee, another common somatic cue) and begins to respond dutifully. He starts by getting up into his lap to perform DPT, or deep pressure therapy. Deep pressure therapy is when a dog lays his body weight across certain points to regulate blood pressure, heart rate, and to keep someone calm and grounded. Kind of like a hug! Then, he nudges/licks his face to keep him focused and calm. This task is a imperative to preventing panic attacks

I read that trained dogs can smell when someone with PTSD is triggered. The amygdala tells the body to start producing stress hormones and dogs are able to smell from the breath and the sweating that results from it.

Couldn't agree more. My best friends have always been my dogs. I can remember being a kid dealing with depression and sitting outside and they would run up to me and sit with me until I either stopped crying or I'd smile. And when I'd smile they'd start playing with me. They knew. They were trying to cheer me up and help me make it. They did.
@marigeobrien
@marigeobrien 8 жыл бұрын
+Auto Young Oh, yes. Dogs or cats-- I am disabled and whenever I am suffering especially badly, my cats cluster around me. If I lay down I have a cat-blanket. LOL! (I have 4.) To fully appreciate this, you have to understand that they are not great friends. In fact, one hates all the others. And the other three pretty much keep their distance, too. But they put all that aside... for me. Just knowing they care and are trying to help. Sometimes that's all the help you need.

Yeah, her intonation is way off for this media; her vocal pattern and emphasis is far too patronising. It doesn't help that her voice is thin as opposed to deep (tone wise, not pitch) and her voice lacks warmth. It also sounds unsupported, like she's not engaging her diaphragm and she's breathing way up in her chest. A lot's up to opinion ig, but I agree with the original comment that she sounds kinda irritating haha.

Service dogs are amazing. I watched a family member's PTSD service dog react to someone else having a hard time. It was amazing. The dog's owner and his friend were talking about time in Iraq and the other gentleman started to shake so the dog slowly inched his way over to the guy while looking back for approval finally getting to his feet and laying across them trying to calm him down. It was beautiful.

+QuasarPsychosis Nothing cheapens the honor, valor, and sacrifice of American Warriors. What is cheap is your understanding of the American warrior ethos and appreciation for it. Imagine going to a far off land to defend the oppressed against genocidal mass murderers and terrorist regimes. The people who were being brutally oppressed, tortured and murdered by Sadaam do not share your miserable view of American warriors.

Joseph Bigham A lot of people many of us vets ourselves don't take thing, esp stories that are subjective at face value. Theres a lot of frauds in this whole PTSD epidemic. Ive seen it personally. PTSD is real and exists...but its become profitable and tool for malingering and getting attention for many. Get mad and pull the no respect for vet card or whatever, even though I am one who served in a conflict and have seen how some are really affected and others just like playing the needy victim. Bottom line a smart person doesn't take anything at face value.

Joseph Bigham Unfortunately there are a lot of cold hearted people. I am not saying this to brag, but I am the type with a lot of sympathy. I have saved wild animals only to be made fun of as if what I did was useless. Life is not useless. The only thing I can figure is that the cold hearted are simple minded or scorned. I often wonder how sympathy and empathy cannot exist in some people considering the ONLY difference between us and a wild animal is sympathy and empathy on a very high level.

@Rafeek Rafeek ? He didn't take the dog to war. Without people like him, you would likely be dead. Hitler would rule the world, America qould have never separated from great Britain, etc. You take things for granted, you don't realize that the things you have come at a price, and that price isn't money. He fought for you, the least you could do is give a simole thank you. The dog is specifically trained to help him, it's not like those "emotional support dogs" who are forced to deal with peoples shit, service dogs are chisen based mistly on their want/enthusiasm for training/working. If the dog doesn't enjoy being a service dog then they are retired as a family pet.

No. Something to strive as hard as possible for? Absolutely. No one wants to lose men, but it's reality, one that is difficult to grasp at times and sometimes it's easier to just focus on "bring them home"

I don’t have PTSD or anything else, but my little Yorkie...🐶 He comforts me all the time.._* *_If I’m hurt, in pain, crying, or upset.. He looks at me with concern & jumps up to the rescue to comfort me.._* *_I was so shocked 😮 & amazed when he did it the 1st time, that I faked it the 2nd time to know if it’s real lol!!_* *_& sure enough, he comforted me again coming to me like his life depended on it, like an alert going off in his head to get to me ASAP to comfort me.._* *_It’s so amazing.. IDK what I’d do without him!! I love ❤️ him so much!! The love you get from a dog 🐶 is like no other.. He is my baby boy.._* 😭

Having PTSD doesn't necessarily mean that you can't cope with the normal ups and downs of life. It would be a pity to live the kind of life where you were shut off from all possibility of sadness, because you'd miss out on a lot of happiness too. In ten years this man will have stabilized and learned a lot of survival techniques for getting through difficult things.

This is why service dogs are needed. That dog is the reason why that man didn't have a break down. Bless him and his dog. Also so many other people who have ranges of illness use service dogs. It may not be visible, like with this man you couldn't tell he had anything that was wrong, but that doesn't mean the person doesn't need the dog. Watch out for people like this man, look at the dynamic between the dog and the person. And remember it could have been any one in that situation, so don't yell at them or anything.

I'm a veteran with Ptsd. I must say this for him and myself. Those VA doctors prescribed a medication that caused me to become violent. This medicaion caused a certain reflex in my body. Sorry to say, I snapped on my husband. He was stabbed over his heart. When I made it to the hospital they tried to medicate me AGAIN. I had to fight them and ask for something that wouldn't make me violent. My heart goes out to children whom they medicate and they get worse. Please believe me, this is a very hard thing. And to top that off, the VA doesn't care about us. This brother is in my prayers.
