Austin, super cool video, thanks for doing it. Nice you connected with Guido. Minor point, Guido said his Omega was the first watch with integrated bracelet. Rolex and Movado had integrated bracelet watches in the 1950's and probably there were others and possibly earlier.

I've loved your vids from Amsterdam, man! So cool that you were able to meet up with Guido, have him show you around the watch shops, and just hang out talking about things that interest you both. That sentiment toward the end of this video where you said you just like having someone to have some good damn dialogue with... Man, I can relate. I'm only 30, but you know as well as I do, being here in Japan where it's already hard to make real friends, being able to make a friend who cares about the same things that you do can make all the difference. Seiko skx is a good watch , top of the range seikos. are fantastic. but its like wanting a bmw or Mercedes, and you got to settle for a Ford, it does the job, but no 1 is going to think you made it, if that's your thing. its ROLEX marketing, they spend the most out off all the swiss watch makers. they are great watches but they aint that great on price. its overhyped

As always, a great video Austin. I believe that the "blue Air king" referred to by Guido is the 114200. Google 'Rolex 114200 blue'. It's a 34mm watch no longer in production as an Air King, but the new one with the same reference is a 34mm oyster perpetual. 3130 movement exactly the same as the old except no 'Air King' in the dial label. I bought one as an Air King for my girlfriend and she gets no end of interest in it. Can't wait for your next watch tour. Great work. Cheers, Joe

There’s no bang for buck in buying an eta based Tudor, unless you’re only worried about resale value (and that’s not a guarantee). You can buy a 500 watch with an eta movement. The real bang for buck is buying the in-house movement that is a free-sprung variable inertia balance. Incredible price when you take the movement into account. And if you’re buying a sports watch, you want a free-sprung balance.

I read a comment somewhere that someone stated that Rolex was a medium brand that became ultra luxury for no reason and now they are over hyped and overpriced. Far be it from me to ever state that but as I watch more and more of these videos and seen the couple of examples show up on antiques roadshow I am starting to see an interesting phenomenon. This happens in just about every genre. There are brands of tools, cars, collectables, jewellery, watched, handbags, shoes that have their hype and it all comes crashing down. Just like some stocks. There is a run up (Crypto also) FOMO and hype and then it all comes crashing down to see people holding heavy bags of stocks that they paid $30 to $80 a share and even more to see it come crashing down to $5 a share and to stay stagnant for years or until bankruptcy. In the case of watches I have seen other sites state this about certain brands I am unfamiliar with them but to see someone who may have paid 200k for a watch and to see it lose 50% has to hurt like a MoFo. I love these videos because I am just as excited to see Austin excited and appreciate the education into Rolex watches.

Well Austin, I am Dutch, too. So, I know this Gassan Rolex store at the Dam Square. They used to have another Rolex store on the Rokin, I believe. And at Schiphol Airport they have them, too. Back in 1986, I went to the Bank van Lening, which is the municipal pawn store, and they had a pure gold Rolex datjust for 10.000 guilders, which is less then 5000 Euros nowadays. LOL. Back in the day, only mobsters/criminals/pimps were wearing a Rolex. Because it is posh and a luxery a normal man cannot afford. Also, highly impractical, to walk aropund with 20.000 dollar things wrapped around your wrist. You have to worry all the time, it being, scratched, robbed or lost. Funny thing, when you were lokking at the Gassan store at the Dam/Rokin in your last shot, while saying goodbye to Guido, you were in fact just 40 meters away from this government pawn store at the Nes -the name of the street- , they have also a store for never collected jewelry and watches, and now and the an auction. Thats how I obtained my vintage Tudors, back in 1995. So, cheers mate, It was funny to see how your mood switched to cheerful, after you gulped down that English pint like it was nothing. LOL. So, hopefully your wife and two daughters will see you soon. Simon

Thanks Simon! Wish I had known about, and gone to, that government pawn shop. I'd like to check that out in the future. I know what you mean about walking around with a Rolex. In summer, I go with short sleeves, and my watch is exposed, and that would have made walking around the city a whole different ballgame.

Guido is right about the Rolex hype and romance out distances the reality of the brand. That reality in my mind is the price ....for the most part the clasps are average( older models jobbed them out to Mexico not swiss made) the crystal does not have anti reflective coating (they say 'nothing has been found that is worthy') and the lume is nothing great. For a time they used Zenith movements. Most designs are retreads for a brand that is afraid to take chances. Good but far from great horology.
