Well spoken representatives of the crypto space (especially Mr. Brooks). My only issue was with the Stellar rep. I wish she had kept her explanation to the wider crypto space and discussed how the claims of energy consumption for some platforms are taken out of context or measured incorrectly. Instead, it seems to me that she talked up her own token.

Anyone who thinks congress taking any interest in Cryptocurrencies is a good thing is extremely naive. The US government wants to find a way to crush crytpos, mark my words. The US dollar is currently the standard currency most trade is done with. Can you imagine what would happen to the US's economy if trade started to be done in cryptocurrencies ? Suddenly, the US wouldn't be able to just print more money whenever they need it. They would go to war to make sure they protect the US dollar.
@Lorne.Mccuaig2 жыл бұрын
@@Boxing4K Some of what you say is true, but the greater truth is that the markets have been in a long term bull run since early 09'. Crypto typically runs about 3x (more in the old days) the fluxuation of the DOW and/or Nasdaq index. If the DOW drops by 50%, crypto will crash around 85% or more. Point is, Crypto hasn't been tested. There are fundamental flaws with Crypto, one of which is the complete lack of regulation around CDO's. The limited number of corps that are SEC listed still don't protect against fraud (think Enron, Madoff) and fraud in spite what crypto fans believe, is rife. Some Ponzi's can go 20 years like Madoff. We really won't know the true extent of corruption in crypto until the industry has been tested in a crash scenario. Readers need to understand that wallet holders aren't the only one's with keys to the wallets regardless of what they might have been led to believe. The creators of coin and the exchanges have keys to these same wallets. When times get tough, we'll see the industry for what it is... one giant meme, a poor imitation of the real thing. Not that I'm a big lover of Fiat currencies or pump and dump SPAC's. Fiat's don't last forever but they do last longer. There are obviously no guarantees with Fiat (welcome to the human condition), but Fiat is controlled by governments of which, if we are lucky enough to be born in a nation where the government isn't entirely corrupt for long periods and thus falling apart, then the Fiat like the Euro or the dollar is controlled at least somewhat by the rule of law decided by democratically elected politicians. We don't have such luxuries with Crypto. This may suit the libertarian and the criminal mind who wants to avoid laws and what? Open source? Public? The names of the transactions aren't public and with a few exchanges and currency trades, it becomes untraceable. It's not that open.

I mostly agree with 'expert policymaker > non-expert policymaker', but both types are humans and can be swayed by many things (primarily $). Suppose an expert policymaker gets lobbied into supporting a policy against the social/political/economic/environmental pros (and vice versa). In that case, it may as well undermine the expertise of any expert policymaker in the future, and it becomes a 'one-step-forward-two-steps-back' type of situation.

BTC's energy argument is suck a BS argument, for one it is not accurate that the cited number is per transaction, it requires the same energy whether you do one or a million transactions, so in order to compare it, we should consider the energy cost of all of the computers and card processing devices to power Mastercard and visa, the only difference is that we can easily calculate BTC's value. On the other hand the way Bitcoin works it pushes energy consumers to go find the cheapest sources because they are directly penalized for not being efficient, so it often takes advantage of energy that would otherwise be wasted. And lastly as the network capacity is not necessarily correlated to the amount of energy consumption, more traffic does not equate more energy. The truly scaling options like lightning don't even require the same energy process.

If you watched the actual video, she actually was asking the question of HOW the CEOs would respond to people who say what she said. People like you get completely fooled by poor video editing like this. CNET has the full clip as "Watch AOC question Crypto execs on how Bitcoin is different" which shows she asked it in a way that allows the CEO to educate the audience, but for some reason CNET cut the first part out completely to make it seem like she's simply making a naive statement. Her full question was "What do you say to the folks who say this doesn't seem like a new financial system per se but an extension or perhaps expansion of the present one?"

if you listened to the actual video you'd see AOC was asking *how the CEO would respond to someone who says* that it's not a new financial system. No clue why CNET decided to cut that out, it's clearly not how she asked it and makes people like you misunderstand the conversation.

I think the most profound thing about this discussion is that it's taking place between adversaries. Our got, along with most others are, by in large, owned by central banks. Current regulations, even in the U.S. limit class mobility. The democratization of access to money and opportunity is the antithesis of what the fiat system promotes. These are exciting times folks. So much to unpack in all of this. My hope is that we are able to maintain the momentum. The day that the crypto markets consitently act independent of fiat economic trends is when we can say we are seeing the tide turn from the fiat system.

Answering the question from congress on negative consequences if congress takes a heavy handed approach to regulating crypto currencies, Mr Brooks states "one way to prevent people from potentially losing money in this volatile market would be to stop as many people as possible from accessing this amazing technology (for example the way the current legal regime works is that certain kinds of assets can only be purchased by accredited investors, meaning "rich people") so the only people who can get rich on this amazing new technology would be people who are already rich - that'd be one way to protect the everyday person from the potential to lose money." !!

Here some of the questions that should have been asked by competent Representatives: Why would the creator of a currency keep the first 1.1 million of it out of circulation; isn’t the purpose of currency to circulate, so that people can use the currency to buy goods and services or that it can accumulate transaction fees? What happens when BTC is hacked, lost, or simply forgotten about when a person dies intestate? How can crypto currencies hope to become useful when there are more kinds of crypto currencies in existence than there are vendors and merchants who actually accept crypto payments? Why should a buyer use a currency that can only be used in digital transactions, when a more stable fiat currency can be used in digital as well as in-person transactions?
