Watch the first lines put into operation as firefighters are met with heavy fire conditions in the rear of a structure that spread throughout the home and through the roof. A second alarm was ordered on arrival.
Firefighters were forced to evacuate the building and fight the fire from the exterior as fire took over the house. No injuries were reported and it took firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control.
During the fire, a Milford fire went back into the burning home and grabbed the American flag that was hanging in the porch so it wouldn't be damaged by the fire.

Best part of the video? Not in my book. The FF retrieved the flag long AFTER the evacuation order had been given, thus he was guily of disobeying and order, and in doing so put himself and possibly others at risk. A flag can be replaced; a FF cannot.

Totally agree with "Maxim". They never intended to open the roof. Fires in balloon frame constructed buildings can be quite challenging, but getting crews inside and opening up on each floor and especially opening the roof early in the operation is a must. I watch a lot of fire videos, and it seems that vertical ventilation (opening up the roof) is not high on the priority list for many departments. Newer light weight construction makes roof operations a lot more dangerous. Older building construction gives crews more time to get the roof open.

Ballon frames are EXTREMELY hard to put out. Opening the roof will offer no benefit at all. We never open the roof on them. You will be chasing the fire every where for hour and hours and hours.

NorthWest Firefighter... I (retired suburban firefighter) along with just about every Chicago Firefighter would disagree. Opening a roof on balloon frame construction helps to minimize the mushrooming effect in the attic space which allows the guys to work inside to open walls and ceilings. If your department "never opens them up" that would explain why you guys are there for hours and hours.

Gina Tomaso no, it wasn’t. The initial crews were making good headway it appeared. Had the roof been opened, it will give the interior crews time to get through the interior walls to the voids. This building looks to have a built out attic. Those are always a pain in the ass because you can’t get under it and pull to open the cockloft. The only options are vertical vent, massive manpower, or exterior clabbard removal. All of them are hard work and require a lot of the members operating.

Watched this fire scene from the job site on Claflin Street yesterday. The firefighter that saved the flag is an AMERICAN HERO! Alot of people don't understand some issues with balloon frame. Its like individual runs going from basement to attic every 16 inches of the wall. It also is older construction meaning the wood is older and dryer so burns better. And the walls are probably camelhair plaster meaning meaning 1in by 1/4in slats from floor to ceiling making a quick fast moving fire.

The ladder parked themselves out! The engines could have left more room but the ladder stopped in a position that made the building completely inaccessible. Very poor placement and obviously no intent on truck work being done.

Jed-Henry Witkowski , Each firefighter has their own individual tag. When they get on scene, they hand their tag over to whomever is in charge of staging and wait to be assigned a task. Once a firefighter is given a job, the staging officer moves their tag to represent where that firefighter is and what they are doing. That way you know exactly where everyone is and what they are tasked with. That is what the term accountability means.

This is shameful! Started off good and then went to total shit when all effort was given up by command. Go in, open up, and put the fire out! While the engine is getting that done, the truck (which should park somewhere other than in front of the NEIGHBORS house) goes to the roof to open up in the rear and keep the fire from mushrooming through the attic. What would also help is to not vent windows in a manner to draw fire though the house. Oh but look at that fancy command board! What a joke! Fires have been burning in balloon frames for 150 years. If you dont know how to put them out by now it's time to give up the fire business!

@NickyNick yeah the attic was getting worse. Guess what though? If you open up and put water on the fire, it gets better! It's amazing but believe it or not water puts fires out when applied to the seat. Usually that works best when done BEFORE conditions are that bad but the fire was beatable at that point and did not require evacuation of the entire building. Pull back from the attic, vent the roof, and then push back up and kill the fire. Master streams and soaking the bejeezus out of the rest of the house not required.

These days at busy FD's they are typically washed after every shift When If first started in the 80's we only cleaned them occasionally or when really bad, but as we evolved we started to see how many nasty pathogens and such were imbedded in them. Today modern FDs have large specialized washing machines designed specifically for turnouts and bunkers, as well as commercial extractors to remove the moisture. The same is why firehouses now are pressurized and isolated from equipment rooms and bays in order to keep all the crap out of the living areas. It's also why FD's are switching to "clean cab" apparatus and why you see more and more firefighters packing out at the fire instead of inside the cab.

Second, assuming I know nothing about construction is just about as stupid an assumption as you could have made. I worked as a volunteer First Responder in Bethesda, Md right out of HS in 1971. I owned my own technical design installation and service company for about 15 years including power wiring up to 480 volts, security systems, very elaborate fire alarms and foam dump systems in airplane hangars, remote controls of all kinds of mechanisms and electrical and electronic systems- both commercial and residential. I have renovated houses including my own, helped to build a church in Irving, Texas from the ground up. I am curious why you seem to think I have no experience in construction. I have also worked evacuations of residents in 2 forest fires here in SoCal as well as worked with other volunteers handling hose lines in the foothills of Hollywood and Sunland -Tujunga communities.

Balloon construction. Started in the basement and it was most likely in the walls from the ground to the roof. It's one of the dangers of old homes in New England. No fire breaks in the walls from floor to floor.

@@ginatomaso9962 the roof didn't self vent until after the evacuation was sounded. The roof should have been vented to the rear early on to prevent the heat from the fire running the balloon frame voids in the C-side wall from mushrooming across the attic. This in conjunction with aggressive opening up of the C-side wall to expose the fire and get water on it would have stopped this in its tracks. The only ventilation performed of the upper floor (A-side dormer window) only served to draw the fire across the entire attic. A little bit of the eave venting fire or even burning off is NOT a vent!
