one reason why i decided on getting a hamster last year was because I struggled intensely with insomnia and couldn't sleep at nights. It got really really lonely, and having a hamster there awake with me to keep me company helped me so much!! It really felt like our time together as she kept me company and I got to watch her play. I miss having a hamster so much :(( I hope to get one again soon!!

I did it backwards - I owned a hamster as a kid, and decided to get one as a "low maintenance" pet before really doing my research on what they truly need to thrive. My syrian Lulu has upgraded from a crittertrail to a 400sqinch to now a 600+ Sq inch with active plans to upgrade her, yet again! 😅 I am very grateful for the few, but educational people on KZbin for lending their education on hamsters! My Lulu thanks you!

Hi Victoria! I work at an animal shelter that specializes in cats and dogs and my job is specifically about teaching young people the care needs of different pets. We recently started branching out into more hamster (and other critter) adoptions and your videos have been such an incredible resource for me to learn about these pets and who they would be a good fit for. I’m seriously so grateful to be able to provide people and these little babies with the resources they need and your videos provided such an enjoyable and entertaining way for me to learn. I already have a hamster :) I didn’t know a lot about hamsters the day I got him, since I was at my cousins birthday party, and saw her hamster which was in a small cage with no toys, and no human to interact with. I offered to adopt him, so I used the whole night at their place researching, and convincing my parents. My mom loved animals, but wasn’t sure that I would have the time, and was scared that I would eventually forget about it like my older cousin did. I’m 13, and now have a hamster named Bob ;) I bought the detolf, and did SO much research about hamsters for him. I bought so much stuff it sounds like a lie 😅 I’ve always been saving my money, and been afraid to use it, but it’s like I found my call. He’s my angel, and I will do everything for him, since I told myself that even tho he’s really old, I would give him a special home for his last months. Considering the home he lived in before, he’s actually been alive for a long time now. If my cousin was right about his age, he is 2 years old right now, and is by the looks of it a winter white dwarf hamster. I’m not sure since they didn’t know ;)

same, I had my hamster in a habitrail I had been given by a friend who I considered a hamster expert because she had had three hamsters. She had kept two dwarfs in the habitrail, and when one died she got another one to put with the first hamster. One of the hamsters was a hybrid winter white/cambells and the other was a roborovski. She also bought them from a pet store. Thankfully I found this channel and was able to upgrade to a large bin cage with lots of bedding! My hamster is so much happier now. Victoria has saved so many hamsters from languishing in critter trails!

I wish I'd seen this before getting a hamster. Although I love playing with her, and she has a huge cage and happy life I think I should have thought the cons so I wouldn't be surprised when she annoyed me or stressed me out to the point of me crying. I hope that if you are thinking about getting a hamster and come across this comment, you will think about it properly. Disclaimer: I love my hammy very much and she does play. Personally I have no regrets but for example people like my brother had to give me his since he was neglecting it. The hamster is a lot more social and happy now that he is with me.

@@pinknintendoswitch5907 once my friend was at my house for the night. I accidentally left my hamsters(Gizmo's) cage open since she had two trapdoors and I only managed to remember to close the bigger one. After a while I still hadn't calmed down and was watching my phone for the whole night whilst my friend and sister were playing. She has escaped many times too and had to have over 3 cages since when she's managed to escape she can do it again really easily.

Amazing video, Victoria. This really helped me learn some new information that I didn’t already know. I made a few mistakes when I first got my hamster, Toffee. I got her a small cage, really unhealthy food, and unfortunately, took her wheel out on a night. I also made the mistake of having her in my bedroom, even though I was warned multiple times that she would be too noisy. Honestly, I feel really bad for how I treated my hamster. And it’s really lucky that I found your channel. Because a couple months ago I got Toffee a HUGE bin cage. And thanks to my sisters friend, Toffee now has a healthy diet made mainly of bird food. My sisters friend is an absolute expert with hamsters. She also has her wheel in on the night. But I couldn’t have learnt half of this information without finding your channel, so thank you. I mean it. Your channel has helped me so much with Toffee and I’m so happy that Toffee is now living a happy life, like she deserves. So thank you Victoria.

Hi, great video as ever. I'm lucky with my George because he is the tamest hamster I've ever owned and he likes human interaction. I typically leave him alone during the day to do his own thing, sleeping, eating etc. Sometimes he doesn't want to be disturbed which is why I leave him to his own devices in the day while checking to see if he is ok. Then at night is when I get to interact with him as he is more self aware and awake. He comes up to see me and I get him out in my hands for a bit. It's a shame to see people treat hamsters poorly sometimes especially when you've been a hamster owner for a few years like you and me. I look forward to your next video. ☺️

Loved the vid! I adopted a Syrian hamster just over a month ago, but he’s absolutely terrified of everything. He run away as soon as we enter the room or a light turns on. On the odd occasion he does stay out when i enter the room, normally after 1am, he will take and pouch treats from me but then as soon as he got a few treats he will run down his burrow and not come back out till he knows we are 100% gone, as in he won’t come out for a good hour or so. Any tips to help reduce his fear and help bond? I’ve done the tissue paper with my scent on but it doesn’t seem to of helped☹️ I managed to get him out twice for bath time bonding and once free roaming but each time he just hid in a corner x

@Augie the Hamster Hello! Thank you! I’m glad to hear this isn’t just my hamster! As long as he’s okay I’m glad, I was just worried that it was causing him stress. I don’t want to force a relationship with him, if he is a ghost hamster that’s okay, I just don’t want to stress him out or for something else to be causing this! But I’m glad that you managed to be able to pet yours. On the odd occasion he is out, he will take a couple of snacks and he will let me stroke him gently which he doesn’t seem to mind which is good. However I have noticed some night he doesn’t use his wheel, he has a 12 inch wheel but as I’m not able to be in the room while he does use it I’m unsure as to if there could be a problem when he runs on it as in it could be wobbling or something (it spins fine with my fingers however with him in there it could be different)

Haha I can relate to hamsters not being easy to please... My hamster used to live in a cage that had 490 sq inches and she was not happy at all. Thanks to you, my parents were able to understand that she needs more space and enrichment and now she lives in an ikea detolf and is very happy with it (so far ;) Thanks Victoria

I rescued a very neglected hamster I saw online. He had a tiny cage with no wheel and shredded newspapers as bedding. It broke my heart! Now he has a spacious bin cage with so much enrichment. He went from only 32g to 50g so far. He is surprisingly friendly considering his past but I just focus on giving him a happy healthy life. It makes me so sad to think about the life he used to have but I hope whatever time he has left is spent happy knowing someone cares about him.

For me hamsters are just so easy to care for just get a bin cage study a bit and put bedding all that not to mention that you can own him on a budget! With the bin cages also not to mention how cute they look! Look at that small snout and cute little eyes !

Only issue is that often times a bin won't be large enough and many will need more space.

My other hamster nearly lived 3 years and it amazed me bc he had the worst enclosure ever. Just a 10gallon tank, food, water and Tiny plastic castle hideout and a 7in wheel and a bad diet and was woken up all day. It’s just kinda amazing that he lived so long.

I want a hamster and I’ve been obtaining safe suplies for over a year now. When I move in with my boyfriend in a month, I’m gonna buy the enclosure and set it up. Then I’ll see what more I need and once the set up is done, I’m gonna find a hamster to adopt. I’ve wanted this for a while but now the time is almost right

At t he same time they can teach me a lot about responsibility which is why I wanted a hamster to learn how to properly take care of an animal. Your videos have helped me a lot and so I have gained the courage to ask my parents for a hamster for Christmas and I promise to continue doing everything you say to do so the hamster can be happy 🥰. Before I got my hamster, I used to sleep with little to no noise in my room, I just couldn't fall asleep if there was noise in my room. And now, I find it kinda funny, that has changed. I can't sleep with the TV on, or listening to music, but I NEED to hear my hamster. It doesn't matter what type of sound he makes, I need to hear him to feel at ease. The "lull" of his wheel when he runs makes me sleepy, and I feel better when I hear him exploring his cage searching for food.

For a couple years, I was debating whether or not I wanted to get a hamster. I did research and kept thinking it over. After much consideration, I decided to get one! I made sure to do lots of research before getting one, including religiously watching your channel. :3 Last month, I got my adorable little hammy from craigslist, and I'm so overjoyed! I'm still taming her since she's still warming up to me, but we're making good progress so far. Overall, if you want a pet, PLEASE DO LOTS OF RESEARCH! Make sure it's right for you! Thank you, Victoria for teaching me and many others how to properly care for a hamster~ :D

Love this video! So glad you touched on all the points! I have three hamsters as well and before adopting them I watched ALL your videos. All of my hammies are living their best life! One doesn’t like to be held, but I love her to death, my other loves to hop in my hand and let’s me hold her and give her little rubsies…my most recent hamster is a rescue and he’s a long haired Syrian who’s terrified of his own shadow. He takes treats from my hand and occasionally lets me pet him. I never try to force any unwanted interaction with him and use the cup method for transferring him to his playpen. As long as my hammies are living a happy, healthy, and enriched life, I enjoy just being in their presence!

I remember that my sister was sleeping in my room, at this point in time I had not done much research into hamsters before getting her. I did research after I got her, my sister was a light sleeper and usually, she'd run on the wheel between 9pm to 2am. So my sister would take out the wheel even though it was the only source of anything my hamster could do. Keep in mind, she had her own room but choose to sleep in my room, so I moved into her's with the hamster so it could least have the wheel while I worked on proper cage for her.

My family have had 13 hamsters and 5 of them were mine. Only one is currently alive, a golden hamster, and he doesn't really "love" human interaction but he doesn't hate it either. My last two dwarf hamsters really loved being held and pet and would run directly to me every time. They were really cuddly. And those two dwarf hamsters were quite used to human interaction and was already quite tamed apart from the other 3 who never got picked up unless it was to "show customers". So I needed to work with the other 3 to get them more tamed.

Both of me and my cousin once wanted hamster so bad. I adopted hamster first cause I'm stuggle with insomia and I'm not a light sleeper (I once sleep like dead when a earthquake happened) while my cousin is the opposite and can wakes up just by a slight sound of wind chimes. She gave up to owning a hamster and turn into keeping a cat. So now whenever she want to see a hamster, she will do a sleepover at my house just to watch my hamster. After watch this video, I'm glad she know whats the best for her and her pet, she is wise and lovely.

Owning hamsters has two minuses - they live shortly and also you have to think of them, when you're going for vacation. But those five cuties in my childhood and adolescence were sooo worth it! Dogs for example are really good pets for travelling, but even if you were able to take your hamster's enclousure with you, they're still gonna be very stressed from moving to a strange place

I want another hamster because I miss my old long hair hamster as he passed away before pandemic panic. It's just my nephew comes over I keep the hamster in room which not a problem when I was working. There's one time he was awake kept looking at me while I getting ready to go for work. I'm thinking of making a DIY bin cage and attach to large ferplast cage. I had good memories of all my hamsters and let them for playing time. They tend to climb over me or in go to my sleeves. First Syrian hamster climbed on my shoulders it felt like he was dancing at back of my neck. Bless him.

This video is so informative! I’ll definitely send this to people if they are thinking of getting a hamster. The thing about hamsters that is most difficult for me is the short lifespans. I’ve so far been lucky with lifespans because my first hamster lived for over 2 years (before he had to be put to sleep because he was very ill and in pain) and my current boy, who is 1 and a half years old.

I personally do not find hamsters to be that expensive if you go with a bin cage and a lot of homemade diy stuff and repurposed things from thrift stores and such, but if you did want to do all commercial products specifically sold for hamsters that could be quite pricy! I think that people should really be prepared for vet bills though. It could cost $50-$100 but it could easily cost way more. My hamster had a problem with one of his eyes that was swelled up and kinda pushed out of his head, and the vet visit just to tell us what was wrong was $130. Thankfully he was pretty much okay and he just needs eyedrops every night now, but they told us that if we hadn't taken him to the vet sooner his eye would have dried out from him not being able to close it, and the surgery to remove his eye would've cost $800 or more.

Only issue is often times a bin isn’t going to be large enough/deep enough to completely satisfy a hamster, majority of the bins I come across rarely reach 800 sq inches! But of course for other things there’s ways to get around spending hundreds of dollars but that’s gonna depend on what you have access to, where you live etc! I’m glad you were able to get your hamster into the vet in time and could just be treated with some eye drops ❤️

@@VictoriaRaechel Definitely it sometimes is hard to come across large bins, but thankfully I've been able to find large ones where I live.
