I'm a stay at home mom with a toddler and 2 large dogs. We have chickens ready to move outside. Our first. Our toddler thought the babies at the feed store were adorable. At first I was against it but did some research and ended up getting 8. They've done great so far. Toddler is in love with them all and named them after her favorite cartoon "Spirit, Riding Free". I wish I could send u guys pictures. This kid sneaks them on the couch and covers them (except their head) with a blanket to watch TV with her. I'm looking forward to having eggs from them but really enjoying learning their personalities. My husband has built a coop from pallet boards and my dad (wrapped around my daughter's finger) paid for lumber and wire to build a (hopefully) secure chicken yard. Toddler helps feed and water them and loves giving treats. They have improved our lives already. Sry this is so long. We love watching your videos. You guys and Adler Farms were part of the inspiration to take the leap to get started with chickens. ❤️

Rachel and Kevin, I had 75 chickens, decades ago, they were meat and egg producers. We had bantys, Rhode Island Reds, Blue Chochins, and leghorns. I had 1 Rhodie, named Little Red, who laid a double yolker, everyday. Except for about 2 weeks or so, in summer. I really enjoyed listening to them. I miss going out to do daily chores, for and with animals. Thanks for the memories! Prayers and Blessings always

Back in '58/'59 we lived in Zimbabwe & a colleague of my dad's gave my sister & I each a day-old chick (Rhode Island reds). When they started laying my sister's hen would lay a double-yolker once a week & the rest of the week would be a regular egg. Being our pets they were free -range so by pure accident we spotted the hen coming out from under a bush where the double - yolked egg was always found!

I've heard that what the grocery stores sell as fresh eggs on average are six weeks old. Don't know for sure if that's right, but I prefer to reach under the girls and get the eggs. That to me is fresh eggs.

I accidentally found out about black soldier flies when I had some lay eggs in an old bag of Chaffhaye I left outside and it got rained on. Lots of wiggly grubs. A bit gross to dig out, as they like the smelly rotting Chaffhaye, but worth it to give the chickens the treats. Before selling eating eggs, check with the Cottage Food laws in your state. Some have restrictions, like can be sold from your house, but not offsite (farmer's market) with out having a tested/certified flock.

Great informative video Rachel & Kevin. They can be such fun, & they do have their own little personalities😊 Fun fact: “chook” is used in Australia as well, e.g. chook (ready to cook) raffles are common at pubs, taverns & clubs to raise money for charities, sporting clubs etc. If family or friends call & say they are at the supermarket & do I need anything, I would say “can you grab me a BBQ chook please" & a chicken coop is often called a chook pen. It’s origin is definitely from the UK though. Take care & cheers 🐨🦘🥰

I love how your feathered friends enjoy the Grub Terra. Our area in the Michigan rural city area does not allow us to have chickens in the city area. There are rural farm areas for that. I am a low income disabled senior citizen, I do get my eggs from the local Farmers Market that is during the summer months only. I cannot purchase and eat eggs from the grocery store any more due to sensitivity issues. The only store egg I can eat is “Eggland Best”. Changed it every week, we had a place where my dad created a mulching place . Used later for his Vegtables. And we had great potato beds, Strawberries Coliflower. And mulch for fruit trees. We had a big fenced in place for them. My dad planted two Cherry trees in there. Believe me we had lots off Cherries! As did they. When, he gardened, they came out , and followed him every where. Amazing, and yes very social. Fun to wacth! My role as a child , was the egg collector. 🇩🇰🇺🇸🌅🐔🐔🐔🐔🐓🐣🐤🐥

We both are 68 maybe to old now, I am on oxygen 24/7 So it's not easy for me to help with raising chicken. I think lots of store-bought eggs taste like fish. Don't know how that happend. I never wanted to have chickens until I met my husband. He talked me into it and I've not looked back since. He calls me his Crazy Chicken Lady. I also hatch geese and ducks. I sell most of my eggs for eating, but do sell hatching eggs as well. You're right they are the gateway animal to farming LOL!!! Thanks guys for another great video!!!

I had chickens for Y2K. I got 3 White Leghorns from the grade school down the street and two dozen large breed eggs from Murray McMurray, which I hatched most of. I kept them in large Rubbermaid tubs. (The size of a small horse trough) until they were old enough to go into the coop and yard my husband built for me. The Leghorn hens started to lay and the rooster went in the soup pot. A lot of the large breeds were roosters. (1 Rhode Island Red, 3 Barred Rocks, a pair of Turkens, one male one female and a couple other breeds.). Unfortunately, a neighbor called the police and I was told there was an ordinance against having them. So, they ended up going to my old 4-H leader on 10 acres. I really miss those fresh eggs, especially the double yolk ones from Henrietta the Leghorn.

My sister raised her chickens to be extremely friendly and made a coop and roost up against her house. Because of living out in the woods she had trouble with mice snd those big wood roaches. Anyway, after she put that roost and coop against her house (she was meticulous cleaner so it was cleaned daily) she noticed she never saw those wood roaches any more. Only once in awhile would a mouse get through, too. Sadly, she lost all of them when it flooded.

We live in the country-burbs in southern NJ. It’s technically burbs but there are lots of farms out here and properties have more land than regular burbs. We see chickens “exploring” in different places as we drive down the road (50mph roads) and they do wander but we rarely see one get hit by a car. I lived next to a farm in the regular burbs when I lived in a condo, and they had a very loud rooster. He woke me up every morning. Lol Out here nobody has roosters near us (thank goodness! Lol) but a few years ago the town sold the land next to us…. to a trucking company that “gets started” at 4 am and sometimes they honk and they do “rumble” our house. So 🤷🏻♀️ lol. We have arial predators …. Huge hawks perch on the water tower across the street from us. They have been known to pick up small dogs and sometimes we hear stories that they drop them somewhere else. 😳 These hawks circle my tall husband as he mows the lawn! My daughter wants a homestead so there will be chickens one day … plans are to have a big property and live next to each other when she is a veterinarian.

My family is from Britain but I’m from Canada and they’re called Chucks because they say “chuck chuck chuck”. Lol. Love our hens, we just renewed with 25 new Martha Browns as everyone was getting aged and loss production. I recommend them as well, we have very cold winters so you need a large enclosure that can be heated. We use straw bales around the walls and two heat lamps. Keeps water thawed at ~30. We’ve tried lots of varieties so explore. Some are crazy mean, some amazing egg producers, some continually want to nest; while others are just all round great birds. I love your variety of fowl on your place but unfortunately I have one dog that would eat; chase and maul free range. All ours are in a large pen to keep them safe. I always wonder why you keep some in the pen but others out free range? Never tried the grubs. Wonder if they are available here.

this makes no sense to me, if you'll pardon me saying so - does the US really import those things from Russia?? I'd be looking at production problems closeer to home, first - like the baby milk thing turned out to be a factory thatwas burned down. I do agree that it's really unhelpful when a producer has one super big facility instead of spreading production into different areas (and thus also reducing shipping costs)

You also forgot to mention that chickens will chase and get rid of field mice and small snakes. I do love our 30+ chickens.
