here's where I outnerd you and say that relating f number to depth of field isn't entirely right as sensor size and focal length matter, too (technically only the focal length but the size of your sensor affects what focal length you'll want for the same perspective so effectively it's a factor). this is relevant not for our f/1.8 chuds but rather for club f/64, which these days might be more boringly, yet fittingly called club f/11, since they used giant film with accordingly long lenses that still yielded wide FoVs due to the sheer size of the film.

I watch things so passively I never even noticed that video was so... fuzzy. Was surprised to see it here. I would believe that it had to be something that got slipped in the process of setting up everything else.

I use autofocus a lot as a someone who is into bird photography. I've had too many photos look good until I get to editing and find that there was a twig or something between me and the bird and everything is just a touch out of focus. Great advice to play with and familiarize yourself with the different zones, that's been a game changer for me

I don't want to sound like the biggest jerk in the world, but just like with autofocus, the autogain on your microphone can also be tricky. KZbin would be a much more pleasant place if we cared as much about audio as we do about image sharpness.

That last part… whew. Thankfully it was a relatively small project and I ended up hastily re-recording on a webcam, but it scared me off of DSLR shooting for a good few months. I’m only just now getting myself hyped up for another crack at it (and aggressively trying to make sure I know what I’m doing).

focus systems don't really tend to focus on the closest thing, they tend to try and determine sharpness by finding the focus setting where the image frame has the highest amount of contrast, insert several asterisks about pd/cd af and what constitutes contrast or sharpness here. anyway, newer cameras spoil us with advanced autofocus systems. yknow that expand thing he talks about? modern cameras can focus on the eyes, fall back on face detect if that fails, and fall back on a predetermined focus zone if _that_ fails, a blessing. some vlog centric Sony cameras have a creator mode (presenter mode? I forget the name) that's specifically meant to focus on your face until you hold a product up to the camera, then focus on that so long as it's in frame, to then fall back on your face.

Great tips! I have a monitor for each camera since their built in flip screens are too small. I'd also suggest setting a button that's easily accessible to switch between AF and MF. For shoots like where your hand is closer whilst stirring, I'll set the focus to AF so it focuses on the pan, then hit the button to switch to MF to lock it and then stir.
