Really like the fact that you like to go out of the central touristy area, and experience a shopping mall with local people, to feel more the local experience. Interesting the observation that Hungarians are kind of like the Latinos of Central Europe. I wouldn’t have thought that, but interesting!

I should go back one of these days. Budapest was pretty grimy and sleazy in the '90s when I visited. I wouldn't say dangerous but definitely a place where you felt like it was always best to be on your guard. It could be a fun place too. That's weird that none of the locals are going out nowadays, though.

8:00 It is actually not very similar. That is a wrong perception since we always talk about the Finno-Ugrian language group. It is said that it shares around 600 words with Suomi (Finnish) but it has a lot more in common with Turkic languages. So you are not wrong with saying it sounds kind of Turkish.

Hungary was a Turkic settlement in Hunnic Empire times between 50-450AD. Atilla conqered it.Hun-gary comes from Hunnic Empire. The lady said Ottoman but Ottomans were 1000 years after this. I dont think the Ottomans were in Hungary.

@@mrnarason yes but Mongols do not have Turkish genes. They have some Turkish words like "Kurultay" and some Turkish traditions because they were under Uyghur rule originally. Turks are originally from western central Asia north of Caspean Sea and our genes are close to Caucasus.

Beautiful architecture! I generally do not care for modern architecture. For me that modern building on the left (or is it right, irl? 🤣) of the cathedral is ugly and takes away from the overall beauty of the environment. We have such a BEAUTIFUL church here in Hocaba, Yucatan, Mexico! STUNNING!

I'm half Hungarian, speaking the language. However because of that I know the downsides of Budapest and I would recommend to visit other parts of Hungary to get to know real Hungarian life cause Budapest is not real Hungary. More kinda international capital where people think they're better than the rest of the country.

Indeed Budaest has amazing architecture, but suffers from bad maintenance, some areas can be very dirty. As the capital and only real city in the country it is mostly liberal and international (completely opposite to the rest of the country, ruling far right undemocratic pro Russian party and 2nd neo nazi party together have 60% of support). There are certain risks in Budapest which can be only applied to tourists - scams r very common, from restaurants and bars through girls asking for help on the street just to get u to dark street where you will be (in optimistic variant) robbed by her friends. Huge problem are fake taxis (same applies if u refuse to pay 10 times more than the ride should be u can be bitten up and robbed). Best solution is to use temporary disposable debit card. Budapest has a bit of balkan vibe with all good and bad about it.

I was there for two weeks. What a depressing place. I have been all over the world and THE only thing is architecture. That river is very, very polluted. In the two weeks I was there from March 25 to April 6th 2024. The people are very depressed and not friendly. Won't be going back. For god sakes, don't tell people how safe it is when you went only to popular places. There are neighborhoods even I, a veteran and a fellow veteran, would not go there.
