My mom and dad brought a New own in 1992 Lumina Z34 in flame Red only problem is that my mom dad had break problems that the dealer could never figure out. These came out actually came out in March 1991 and discontinued February 1994 I thank. The Taurus SHO had a POS Yamaha 3.0L V-6 was unreliable. They also made this also base Euro Sport with the 3.4 Engine in a 4 door model as well got the same engine from 1992-1994. I thank the Lumina Z34 and 3.4 4 Door only came in Snow White, Black, Flame Red and Silver, and Electric Blue(Very Rare). my mom and dad traded this for a 1995 Chevrolet Impala SS (based on the Caprice) and it was a much faster and better car. At least Impala SS didn't eat brakes front like crazy.
@jiggity765 жыл бұрын
Good info but not quite correct. The Lumina Euro 3.4 sedan was never available in Electric Blue. White, Black, and Red yes. Black being the rarest color option. You might be thinking of Maui Blue on the Z34 coupes, a rare color. I have seen 3 black Euro 3.4 sedans and only 2 Maul Blue Z34 coupes. The Gunmetal Grey Z34 and Silver are also extremely rare colors on the Z34 coupes. I've seen 3 of the grey ones and only 1 Silver.

I don't own a coin laundry but I loved my regular Chevy Lumina. I've always been a grampa car kind of guy. The engine seized on it and I scrapped it, but had it happened now I would have considered an engine swap. I love the black Z34 in your video with the cage in it. It's funny though my Sonata N-line with 5.2 sec 0-60 and 12sec quarter mile would smoke the Z34 and it's stock, but I'd still love to have a Z34, maybe sometime in the future.
@chrislemaster26955 жыл бұрын
My mom and Dad had a Flash Red 1992 Lumina Z34 in 1992 cost was 19K new and these started in 1991 as the first model year and the last year was 1994. They also produced a Lumina 4 Door Sedan was called the Lumina 3.4 with the same engine as well. The Lumina 3.4 4 Door was produced from 1993-1994. Chevrolet Celebrity/ Pontiac 6000 were the cars made before the replacement. 1989 was the first year for Lumina. Lumina was set to replace the Celebrity/Celebrity wagon as GM new FWD replacement by the end of the 1990 model year. Chevrolet on made a Celebrity Wagon configuration for the 1990 model. Fun cool fact Another fact was the base engine for the Lumina for 1989-1992 was the base Pontiac Iron Duke 2.5L 4 Cylinder which was very underpowered. Most Lumina for 1989-1991 had your choice of 2 6 cylinder engines one was the 2.8L Chevrolet V-6 making 110 BHP and the 3.1L Pontiac V-6(3100) V-6. 1995 and on the two door was dropped and the Monte Carlo name was given again. The 1995 Monte cargo base engine was the 3400 3.4L Supercharged and you could get a Buick 231CID 3800 Series II V-6 as optional on the Lumina Sedan and Monte Carlo. Iron Duke 2.5L was dropped after 1992. Lumina got a redesign for the 1995 model year and the base V-6 was the 3100 and you could get the 3.4L and the Buick 231 3800 as optional choices which lasted until Lumina last year 2001.

You got the reasons why it was discontinued wrong and any actual owner of one of these would agree.. I bought mine new in 1994 just out of high school and still have it, and it’s been sitting for years, the same reason why the z34 failed, BECAUSE THE MOTOR IS ABSOLUTE GARBAGE.. literally the worst motor to work on, bust knuckles and lots of swearing because this damn thing will run like crap with the smallest air leak which take a month to just go thru all the hoses to find the leak. You want to change the alternator, ha good luck, mine as well set aside couple weeks to rip apart half the suspension to just get at it or take out a loan to pay a shop to do it of which good luck cuz most shops laugh and say no. Hence why mine is sitting, 3 alternators later.. Literally the worst engine to work on or tune. Yes when new it was awesome, fast, great handling and got the ladies, but once hit 150k miles, I should’ve “accidentally” drove it off a cliff for insurance, now they are worthless besides a joke that I have one.. that’s why..
@AW-pi6ru4 жыл бұрын
Was an original owner of a red 92 Z34. Loved it. Looked great and was quick for it's time. BUT..........the car leaked like a stuffed pig from that damm o drive. A 50 cent o ring under high pressure. Too expensive to fix. Cheaper to just add oil. What brilliant person thought that 4 cams are needed. They should be shot. All for 210 hp. I got rid of it and got a 95 Impala SS. Sorry it's still a sporty looking car.😞

The Lumina Z34 looks nice, but the Beretta Z26 / GTZ looks good too, the Z24 Cavalier is another good looking car as well. I like the way the Z24 Cavalier, little more than the the Z26 and the Z34. I still have my early 90's Cavalier RS ( 2 Doors ) and with the 3.1 V6, more or less a Z24 without the body package in it. ( the car still works too ). These looked completely outdated before the bodystyle was even 10 years old. The original Taurus/SHO aged alot better inside and out. I remember looking for used cars in highschool though AutoTrader magazines (remember those?) around 2002-03 and these were already $1,000-$1,500 specials even then. The dashboard/interior design in these 1st gen. Lumina's looked straight out of the mid-80's despite being NEW for 1990. No safety features at all compared to the Taurus (no airbag until the 2nd gen & no ABS until a couple years after the 1st gen debuted). I always liked the DOHC 3.4's even though the Yamaha in the Taurus was more impressive , and these came in coupe bodystyles which I always preferred over 4-door's. Those are the only perks to me.

O-60 more like 8 seconds. The 3.8 was quicker and that was only around 7.8. The 3.8 felt more powerful That 3.4 I’m sorry barely felt more powerful then the standard v6. Only mainly in th upper ranges and by the time that heavy car even got up to those high revs the shit transmission knocked it out of the power band relying on only 200lb ft at over 4000 rpm’s is crap
@Stressless20232 жыл бұрын
@@damontroch4765 I don't remember the LQ1 3.4's being that slow, at least not in the FWD cars. Especially when GM switched from multiport to sequential FI sometime in the mid-90's and they got a power boost, maybe they were dogs in the base F-bodies where they made less power but my memory of driving W-bodies with the 3.4L is of them having impressive power pretty much everywhere in the powerband - But yeah a Series II 3800 may have got off the line a bit quicker in their day but not by much and the LQ1 would absolutely be walking a 3800 W-body by the end of the 1/4 mile by a wide margin. And the LQ1's were night and day faster than the base 3100 V6 in every way... I've owned enough of those motors as a kid to know the difference in power is VERY noticeable lol.
@Stressless20232 жыл бұрын
@@damontroch4765 And I believe the LQ1 made about 220 lb ft torque not 200. The 3800 only made about 15-20 more at lower RPM but had a much lower redline. The LQ1's loved to rev from what I remember and made most of their power in the midrange.

The 210 HP number is for the 5 speed cars. The auto cars made 200 HP in the early years at least.

Just avoid any of these that lived in the rust belt period. They barely even exist here anymore (Metro Detroit).

The SHO made more power with a smaller engine, that was more reliable because the engine and transmission were japanese. It had a faster 0-60 and higher top speed, although quarter mile was the same. It was also 4 door.
@theroyalcrownedtiger29465 жыл бұрын
The SHO had the 3.0 V6 Yamaha motor in it, unlike the made 3.0 V6 Vulcan or Duratec motor, which is domestically made and engineered. At least with the 3.4 V6 engine for GM Z34 it was domestically designed and engineered. Although I am mostly a GM fan, I do like certain Fords. The SHO is one of my favorite fords.

As a youth my friend bought a blue one. We,would race down the freeway coming home. I Had a 74 nova 6 cylinder originally but I dropped a '66 327 v8 in it. . The Lumina kept up well but wasn't any faster than the 74 nova. I always thought the z34 looked a bit too grandpa like. Especially in blue.

That 3400 v6 is a awesome swap for the Fiero 👍🏻
@JoeBlack11085 жыл бұрын
No it isn't, it made the back half of the car so heavy and made the understeer unbearable above 90 mph or anywhere in the rain. With the widest tires and large swaybars front and back it was still a pain. The fun part is that it destroyed tires every year.
@chrisdooley64685 жыл бұрын
I don’t know I think my SHO was more of a sleeper and that V6 sounded so much better than these 3.4s but to each his own. Interesting that you could get a Getrag 5spd in these. That definitely helped that 0-60 time
@KZSoze5 жыл бұрын
No need to "think" it was, your SHO quite simply was, especially if it was 1st gen. It had two more doors, more room inside, a bigger trunk, a smaller motor that was vastly more efficient and advanced, producing a significantly faster car whether it be 0-60, all the way to 143 mph, well above the top speed of the Z34. If you had a first gen, '89 for example, you were driving the third fastest production sedan on earth, at the time.

I always loved the way the Z34s looked, and the "X" code 3.4L DOHC was a hell of a runner. The problem was they were belt drive and required special tools to hold the cams, and if you didn't have the tools look out you were at least a day into marking and adjusting the belt placement. Plus I found out later that the timing pullies could actually lose alignment causing very quick belt destruction. I had a chance to buy one a few years back due to this issue and backed out after I found how hard the alignment and and installation tools are to find today. I thought of just doing a supercharged 3.8L swap but decided to walk away.

@veteranheavyequipmechanic49905 жыл бұрын
@@86twin I don't know if I'd go that far. The X code 3.4 would run circles around a 3.8. The 3.8 was way more reliable in the long run but the DOHC on the X motor really frees up some power and makes for a really innovative engine but GM, is known for poor execution on innovation. If they would've made it a chain motor this was the motor guys would be chasing
