Great video! This will help those who are considering a CVT equipped Subaru for moderate terrain, overlanding use. If you're looking to do some back country exploring similar to what was shown in this video (towing or not), you're better off choosing a more off-road capable vehicle. Love the Bean trailers and look forward to seeing them in person!

Totally agree with you. Another reason I refused to get a SUV with a CVT trans. I looked at all SUVs in this price range (subaru, honda, toyota, Hyundai/Kia and Mazda came out on top by far with its CX-50 Meridian Edition. It's a 6 speed trans with a 4 cylinder turbo that produces 256 horsepower with 320lbs of torque. The vehicle does come with Falken wildpeak AT trail and they're not bad. But with a 1.5 inch lift and more aggressive off road tires this thing will absolutely go through stuff you can't imagine. Just deciding on which overlanding trailer to get now for a 2 year trip out west for dispersed camping and light overlanding.

True, but not totally true. @wildb4this did it on April 4, 2024 with stock suspension.

Great video, but for more storage I'd add a nice roof rack system. Stay safe, love your campers I'm going to take a look.

Drove mt CTW up the Alaska Highway and back. I think it does have good storage but you do need to pack it properly. That takes time and several trips to figure out. I also don't have a dog that needs the back seat. Thanks for the review!

our dog is our most important piece of cargo! His 100lbs does look funny in the back seat. It makes me smile!

For the average person this combo, or an Outback combo would be fine... Not everybody is going to push it that far, but for those that do yeah it make sense to get a more specific vehicle. For the 80% crowd this or the Outback is a great combo.
@mark-di5pf5 ай бұрын
Agreed. Probably more like 95% would not take it where we take Beans so an Outback would be great. The Crosstrek is a bit limited in its storage capacity for longer trips.

Awesome idea to get a vehicle that many of your customers may also buy! I’ve towed in my non-wilderness 2020 Lifted and modified. Did great with the exception of very steep highway passes on super sustained inclines. I was still able to make it but had to drop down 5-10 MPH below the 65-75 mph speed limit. Not a big deal. I would 💯 recommend monitoring CVT temps when towing. I have a very good and cheap monitor video on my channel.

Thanks for the great video idea. As someone who lives in the PNW, at least half of my Bean usage is for ski camping. I currently tow with a RWD Jeep Grand Cherokee on winter tires. But I am planning to swap that vehicle for soothing with AWD. Living in Seattle, I would only consider smaller vehicles, and ideally I want the smallest AWD option available that can still safely tow the Bean. I mainly wonder about towing up ski mountains on snow covered roads, and towing across snowy interstate passes, though. Is there a downside to using a Crosstrek for those applications? I can never seem to find anything online about towing a teardrop in the snow the way I do.

The Crosstrek wilderness with #3500lb of tow capacity would do well you would need to watch speed and oil temperature on steep uphills. I would definitely want a brake controller in the Crosstrek with a Bean.

Which Ironman lift do you have on the Crosstrek? Normal or Spec-C.

normal

Can you share what bike rack is being used at 11:46 and is it approved/recommended for travel trailers? Thanks!
@mark-di5pf6 ай бұрын
It is a Thule rack and not approved for trailers. It is a bit rough on the bikes on those kinds of off road trails.

I can't believe you didn't have the articulating hitch on it. I have already ordered my Bean Stock and am trying to be patient, but failing miserably!

We did have the Max Coupler hitch on it!

What about a regular Crosstrek? The tow capacity is 1/2 what the Wilderness is.

hi 👋🏼 would the Forester Wilderness perform any better?
@mark-di5pf3 ай бұрын
it would pull the same, off road the same but have more cargo space.

I don’t think people that own a crosstrek would have an expectation of getting up more serious 4WD roads. Honestly I wouldn’t take a crosstrek or even a forester up that section road where you stopped even without a trailer attached.
@angusmacdonald53006 ай бұрын
i had a Crosstrek Wilderness briefly. I honestly don’t know how it got such a high towing rating of 3500 lbs. i think it would be ok softroading (not this heavy duty off-roading) when towing a Bean trailer.

great Jeep. A beast off road when properly configured. Not sure of its tow capacity.

You didn’t even try it with the Crosstrek. X-mode is a lot more capable that you give it credit for.
@mark-di5pf4 ай бұрын
Crosstrek was in X mode the whole time we were off road. The Crosstrek was getting hung up on much smaller ledges than the one that turned us around. X mode is really good just not compared to 4 low and a locker.

What about a Tesla Model Y AWD?
@mark-di5pf6 ай бұрын
Much more power, lower ground clearance so it cant go the same places as the Crosstrek. Towing a small trailer cuts range by about 50% on an EV.
