One other tip to mention in regards to digicams: If you're looking at buying a Sony, make sure it also comes with the USB cable. They were ALL over the place with proprietary cables back in the 00s

The memory stick adapters are a HUUGE lifesaver I got one for my dsc w200 and a 32 gig micro sd and I can take thousands of pictures with no hassle between transferring them to my pc

Old digicams are a sad obsession of mine, I can't pass up a cheap old camera. Cameras that use AA batteries are a godsend. CF and SD cards will make your life easier too. Smart Media card cameras have to be one to avoid as finding card readers can be expensive. I'm old enough to have lived through the whole digital camera thing so these purchases are a trip down memory lane.

I’m addicted to a very specific “Web 1.0” Cybershot model and have a growing collection of them. That old low MP aesthetic and holding the camera cannot be replicated with a app.

@@viperdude72 I have the Sony Cybershot DSC-P41. You still have to deal with old memory cards and the quality is terrible but it works and uses normal AAs. If you’re going to pay more than $20 it better be in really good shape, include a soft case, card reader, and a big memory card. Make sure you can return it and check the battery terminals for corrosion.

And lets not forget all the devices that also happen to contain a camera. I have a Sony Mylo in a drawer (that was a definite fiasco) and it does have a camera in it. And these things can be found dirt cheap as they are essentially paperweights by now. And lets not forget for those who are a bit handy that you can usually hack the camera to take other types of batteries. And if you ruin it, it's no big deal as they are usually quite cheap.

3:38 digital camcorders came about in the late 1990s, but they used tapes. Ever since 2013, I've documented the holiday season on miniDV tapes. Especially with the Canon ZR850 I picked up around 2018, the quality is quite reasonable!

A cautionary tale though: Don't buy JVC tape camcorders, they have notoriously unreliable tape drives. My GR-D90 died last year and ate a tape. I had to disassemble it to get the tape out. I couldn't put it back together. That GR-D270 is a bad backup.

Really great video. I love Digicams whilst most phones take better photos their ergonomics as a camera are awful. So I would always rather carry a point and shoot.

I still have my old Sony camcorder. I have old mini DV tapes where we went skydiving back in the early 2000s...well, I'm the one who filmed it. LOL. I'm not 40 yet, but I feel ancient and young in my mid 30s.

Backup that tape to your computer, make a few copies of it, and go film more stuff. Use ‘em if you got ‘em.

Sadly, most of them are trashed or gave to other people, and the canon sx200is the only camera that remains in my house. If you have a Sony digi cam they make a Pro Duo memory stick adapter which lets you use a Sony Pro duo or PSP memory card with an adapter that you can use in place of a memory stick and now they have a micro SD Pro Duo adapter so with using both of these you could use a 32 gig micro SD card but you can also use larger SD cards if you reformat the sd card to FAT32

I got an old SONY DV-Camcorder from 2001, with tapes and cables and batteries and all. Used it to shoot tons of music videos. I intend to use it to shoot a movie. Cause these days, it's a gen arms race for the latest tech, and in the end, the videos all look the same. DV has a magic that's different. 🙂

Ooooh when you scrolled I saw my old point and shoot that I still have! I hate that thing and the autofocus hunting is 90% of the reason I asked my dad to borrow his manual focus film camera back in 2017... I didn't even have an interest in film specifically, but these old digital point and shoots are useful exactly in the same scenario that best suits a disposable: bright light and far from the subject. I just happen to be cursed with an interest in near-macro insect photography.

Something to note about going with the “recording to tape vs recording to a capture device”, most of the capture devices I’ve come across don’t go below 60fps which will require you to drop the frame rate in editing and you’ll only really be able to interlace the footage with filters. So your footage won’t look as “filmy” as it would if you recorded to a tape and digitized it normally. Sorry if this was already covered in a different video. If anyone has an easy and effective way to interlace 60fps footage down to 24 PLEASE let us know I NEED IT.

i get old camera all the time i buy them untested and its always fun charging them up to see if they are going to work or not. you can more or less trust 8/10 old digitcams but ive had terrible luck when it comes to camcorders, their batteries never seem to hold a charge and people tend to want a lot more for them too. something else to mention olympus are pretty bad for using xd cards instead of sd cards so you have to watch out for that or get an adapter

I just got a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H20 Digicam, and a Sony HDR-TG1 "pistol-grip" camcorder, so I'm just about getting into the game. I also have a Nikon Coolpix L120 which does take multiple types of battery (incl. AA's), but that's more of a bridge type megazoom camera and neither video nor image capture capabilities are that amazing.

@@Epikatlover I'd recommend the H20 for telephoto performance and decent 720p video with above-average low light performance for a CCD sensor point & shoot. But the HDR-TG1 is something I'd avoid as it doesn't have nightshot (really, neither of them do), and it loses color saturation in low light. It just isn't a very good camera. I'm not sure about the TRV17 as I don't shoot with tape based camcorders. I'm geared more towards flash memory "random access" camcorders. If you just want something decent that doesn't break the bank, I'd recommend the JVC Everio GZ-MS100. Has decent VGA quality video, 35x optical zoom and a decent video light, good audio quality, small & lightweight, and records onto SDHC cards. The only gripe I have with it is you have to go into the menu system to change any settings, and it uses the gimmicky "laser touch" slide control (instead of a touch display or joystick) that is never very accurate. If you want night vision then the only non-tape based camera I can suggest is the Sony DSC-V3 which has nightshot, but you can't toggle it on/off or zoom at all while recording video (you can do both before or after), and the low light sensitivity while recording video is very poor, which only makes nightshot usable to maybe 3 or 4 ft in complete darkness (unless you're in an area with non-LED bulbs). The DSC-V3 also requires Sony's proprietary Memory Stick PRO (or pro duo adapter) in order to record VGA at 30fps. Otherwise you're limited to 15fps video.

I have bought a Sony Mavica "recently" and took great concert photos with it. However, i gave it to a colleague and thanks to Covid-related stuff, he doesn't know where it is anymore. :( It was the Mavica which still uses floppys. Still thinking about to grab an old digicam, since the CCD look can be charming. Right now, my smartphone (Unihertz Titan Pocket) has such a bad camera, so i do have something, but having a dedicated camera would be better. About camcorders... I have bought a Super 8 camera instead! :D
