If youve ever wanted a 2door lancer evo, then look no further than the mitsubishi eclipse gsx
with a 4g63 turbo charged engine and an awd drive train its obvious why this car is still so damn popular among the jdm and tuner community!

Im 39 years old. In the 90s the eclipse was a hot ride. You have to remember the car is going to be close to 20 years old. That means the parts are the same age. If you get all brand new crate engine. Maybe forged crank,rods and pistons. Bigger turbo, beefed up transmission and suspension. Ported heads and intake. Bigger cam or cams. Then your car can handle as much hp as you want.

They are, but the drivetrains are not the real issue here so to speak because you can still get new and rebuilt engines and transmissions. The name problem is that you have a car that had typical Dodge rust, and a lot of people who literally bought them and drove them into the ground. So finding a clean example is next to impossible because you had the original owners that didn't care, and then you had a decades worth of kids hotrodding them and beating them to death until the next cool ''thing'' came out. I had a Talon TSI and although I loved the spirit of the car, it was an absolute shit bucket. Between small parts essentially being non-existent unless you buy it used, the hidden rust you don't know about until something breaks (my car was perfectly clean on the shell and for the year I owned it, there wasn't a single bubble anywhere...took it to get new tires put on and one of the lift posts went right through the passenger side rear quarter panel and completely tore out about a foot worth of rusted sheet metal). The cars are great if you can find a good clean one, but hell...for the asking money that people want, you could easily get other newer and more reliable cars (people want for a good stock example anywhere from 2k-6k) like Mustang GT's, Impreza WRX's, and many others.

I’m buying it for nostalgic reasons and I had a red 97 gsx with a built 6bolt swap, ran 11.5 on pump gas back in the 90s. Never leaked oil and coolant like you said. Sold it and now that I’m old and making great money, I’m starting to collect cars from my past. Getting a clean street GSX. Integra Type R. And if I can find a great deal, mkIV Supra.

Upgrade to a better head gasket, install ARP head studs, and the most important thing keep that engine cool as much as you can that's vital for that engine.. After market cooling fans bigger aluminum radiator and you can easily daily drive on 500hp

Correction the dsm shares a motor with a evo 1-3 only. So people don’t get confused thinking your talking about evo 8/9. Once the evo 4 came around the motor and setup changed. Your kinda misleading a lot of people with the issues... They have a bad rep cause people don’t do maintenance and throw 30psi at 18 year old motors. Yes Tcase and tranny is the weak point to the dsm. But tons of company’s have services to makes them stronger. If you want consistent track passes i urge you to look into a built auto. I never seen a ball joint failure ever and Iv owned 13 dsms. Motors can support 600hp stock on e no problem. Again maintenance is key, with any high hp application. Please don’t be afraid to own one of these cars. It’s one of the best and cheapest awds you can buy. If you want to see a great example of a street dsm check out my channel.

Where are you doing your research? Burnt valves? Burnt guides? Definitely not a known issue with the 4G63. The #1 2G DSM issues should be shock tower rot or thrust bearing failure (aka crankwalk) The engine is solid and respond to upgrades nicely as long as they are maintained to accept the power. These cars are over 20 years old now and you can't just throw power at a car that hasn't been gone over with a fine tooth comb..Blame the kids...not the platform.
@TimeAttack90
@TimeAttack90 6 жыл бұрын
4G63addict I feel everyone should do preventative maintenance of if you’re a seasoned mechanic should tear the motor apart and make sure all is fine. I’ve seen guys buy these and try to throw power at them then call them junk. Simply because they didn’t understand that’s not how it works.

One thing I can say a car that sits is just as bad simply from gaskets rotting. The biggest weak point in these cars is the harmonic balancer since they are a three piece design. These cars are reliable if you make them that way. Get gauges from wide bands to voltage monitor everything. I would recommend ECMLink but they are up in the air right now. If anyone has build questions just ask me in my inbox I’m down to help.

You might not be real acquainted with the 4g63, but I am. The DSM 4g63 is MUCH different than the EVO 4g63. For starters the timing components are on the opposite side of the engine. The head oil passages are shit in the DSM version and the cooling setup is different and runs cooler on the evo. The 7bolt in the DSM is known for random issues with crank walk due to poor bearing design and or casting issues in some early blocks. The dsm if left mostly stock will run for a long time, but they don't make enough power. The evo uses a twin scroll turbo setup and spools quicker, vs the dsm single. The 2g has the small t25 turbo from factory and doesn't flow enough. Warning for anyone looking to buy one and boost it more than stock you have to run ARP head studs on anything above 13psi because the factory head studs stretch and are garbage.

WillDagamerkid053 crankwalk only occurred on 95-97 eclipses, they went to a 3 piece main crank bearing for those years which caused the failure, it only is relevant for the 2g eclipse as well as same year evos, the problem in later evos is failing to replace the bolt at the top of the transmission, it causes the motor to rattle itself apart, that exact thing happened to Jafromobile’s GSX here on youtube

No USA evo came with an engine you can put in a DSM easily. This video is just trying to get views. Mr. Random Reviews sounds like he's going off stuff he read online and hasn't actually owned one of these cars, evo or dsm. A perfect example is how he said the highly modified cars are high maintenance around the 3 minute mark. It's been the unmodified cars that I've seen the worst lack of maintenance and neglect on. Mine is highly modified and the maintenance on it is very little, it runs like a top every day and is faster than a lot of other cars on the road.... by a good margin. I'm just sayin this video is a bunch of sensationalism meant to get some dumb kid on the internet to go, "wait whaaaaaaa..... i can have a poor man's evo." The early 90s called, they want their youtube video back.

Most of us guys now in our late 30s are picking them up for nostalgic reasons. How did you not mention 7 bolt Crank Walk? I've owned a 97gsx in the Past and I named it "Doesn't Stay Moving". They're fun but not worth the headache. LS anything will be a much better buy and that's coming from an Audi Owner.

I've worked on DSMs for 17 years I've never seen valve guides go bad with made a timing belt failure hitting the piston. Neither burns valves not unless your making 400hp + IF!!!!! IF!!!!! A shitty tune. Yes, composite head gaskets suck, some guys have good luck with them on copper spray but me the best head gasket is Mitsu MLS head gasket. Never had one fail me. The 4g63 on DSM are not the same as EVOs besides up to EVO 3s, 4-9 are different and the 9s have MIVEC.

Keep it stocked?, I think I would probably mod it to about 300 horsepower. That's not asking too much is it? And for the car being an icon that it is, I'd be willing to accept its reliability being as bad as a Italian cars. Nothing against Alfa Romero's or Ferraris, but I think it's mandatory for a car to every once in awhile explode its guts all all over the racetrack, just like a proper sports car!

Kid you yap too much about carbon , there are 2 things you can stop carbon deposit is get a breather valve with catch can stop oils travel to intakes banking and second is , if you boost . You need to get someone program your fuel system . So your fuel would not run too rich , another things once a month run E85 1/4 mix with fuels 3/4. Do this than you need not blown pistons

The Evo 1-3 engine is very similar to the 4G63 in a DSM, but it's not identical. The intake manifold, head, cams, exhaust manifold, pistons, connecting rods, crank, and I'm sure plenty of little parts are different in the Evo 1-3. They're interchangeable, but not the same parts. As for the Evo IV-IX, they share very little. I love both cars, but don't make a silly claim like that.
