⚠️In this video, I tested the Fire-Maple LAVA multi-fuel stove for the first time, and it got a bit dangerous. Watch as I navigate some unexpected stove defects and share important safety precautions you need to take when using this stove. It wasn't all plain sailing, but I eventually got it running. Stay tuned as I also compare it against the popular MSR Pocket Rocket.

I would chalk this one up to user error. All liquid fuel stoves require priming. But you just need a teaspoon or two of fuel to do it. Anything more and you will get a huge conflagration like that. Light the priming fuel, and let it burn off. It may take a minute. When it is gone, your stove is hot and the heat will convert the fuel coming down the fuel line from a liquid into a gas. Open the valve, throw a spark in there, and bingo, you'll have a controlled blue flame.

The stove seems just fine to me. When preheating it, it works that way. Perhaps you just overflooded it a little bit. ☺

I've been using mfs's for uh maybe twenty years from many brands like Primus, Optimus and Soto so I do consider my self as a semi experienced user. My initial thought was that you have too much fuel for priming. It overflows the cup and absorbing material (which is definetly not cotton but rather some mineral fibers or so) and then fuel is burning all over the burner. I might be wrong, there might also be something wrong with the unit but I would recommend to test with shorter periods opening the valve before priming. You could also try priming with alcohol, just carefully pour or inject it on top of the silencer and see if it is landing on the absorbing mat. Alcohol gives soot free priming process.

Thank you for this useful review. I see this stove is less safe and spends more fuel than my traditional roaring liquid fuel stoves. Think I'll stay with them. Anyway thank you for the information that saved me my time and money.

You need to use far less fuel to pre-heat. I use a small amount of denatured alcohol and there's no soot.

The soot is from the petrol, I believe.

For the isobutane/propane canister, the stand is only needed for cold weather. In mild temperatures the fuel will go from liquid to gas. But in cold weather it will not. So you turn the canister upside down and liquid fuel goes down the line.
@dudedud238
@dudedud238 2 ай бұрын
For the canister, no need to have it upside down unless you're in freezing temperatures. When its upside down you're going to get a flair up as you're moving liquid gas through it, it needs to heat to turn it to a vapor at the nozzle. For the liquid fuel, you only need to let a little fuel in, turn it off, light, wait for it to go out, turn on the valve again, and light. Once it's heated up, it burns fine. This is the same for all multifuel stoves.?

Thanks for the comment. You are provided with a tripod to hold canister in that fashion. Truthfully I never would. I did as it was designed for the review. Maybe an oversight. Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it 👍

@@soletrail It's meant to be held either way. Canister upright for warm weather, canister with the nozzle faced down for cold (0°c) weather. Faced down it becomes less efficient but will burn hotter as the heat vaporizes the liquid fuel. If you used it faced up in cold weather it won't burn nearly as hot.

wow thats some cheap knock off of a real one (see MSR, Primus and others) but to be honest unless your going way below zero there is no need. These things are for extreme cold or extreme altitude where your gas just wont work

I've Seen this Poorly Designed Firemaple stove before🤢, liquid fuel in this thing is an absolute Hassle of a MESS, Unnecessarily Troublesome, Dangerous🔥Fire Hazard- -Why bother with the sooty, drippy, messy damn thing- > Watch out for Firemaple FIRE PIT, Designed Upside Down, Spills Coals & Embers OUT of its Feeding ports onto forest floor, wind gusts blow them onto surrounding flammables-

The main thing about a multifuel is winter use. I have an edelrid hexon. Usual system to prime for petrol but less flame than that. It also doesn't need a change of jet. Thing is when playing with liquid fuel you have to be careful😂 That stove shouldn't be doing that on gas. Is it the wrong jet on it or is it because you inverted the canister before preheating? Also, the process should be to pressurise, soak the pad and light to preheat and then when the flame is almost out turn the valve to give gas. However, where is the preheater tube on that stove. There isn't one!!! How is it supposed to preheat and vapourise the fuel? Petrol stoves used to be more common. As well as the edelrid, I also have a Svea 123r ( the Swedish hand grenade), a beautiful brass job. I got that in 1985. I prime it with priming paste. I also have an Optimus rider which is basically a Coleman copy and is a bit pants. That muffler looks a bit like a berniedawg copy. I have a berniedawg on the edelrid. I like the roar of a petrol stove though so don't muffle the svea. I run my stoves on Aspen 4T. It is pure 4 stroke petrol you can get in places like Quinn's. Don't use petrol from the petrol station. Too many additives. In a pinch, Zippo lighter fuel is good but expensive.

Your big flame was because you had the gas cannister upside down and it was getting liquid gas. All liquid fuel stoves take a long time to preheat and should be used outside the tent.

Cheers for the comment. I will revisit this stove as I feel I may have missed a few steps. In saying that I put the canister in the position they state to do it. they even provide a tripod to hold it that way. Odd I must agree. Thanks for your thoughts. Appreciate it 👍

Thanks for the in-depth review of the "unique" stove, very dangerous and heavy, I would only use it in an extreme emergency situation I'm the winter outside in two feet on snow, it looks too complicated for the average person, there are other much simpler stoves out there, maybe fire-maple need to re-engineer it for the safety aspect. If I was car camping I might take it for emergency use only but it'll never be my go to stove, excellent review tho, tnx👍

I reviewed this too. Just wouldn't work after swapping back to gas. Other youtubers have identified an incorrect gasket rubber that is not petrol compatible. After watching this, has confirmed my decision to bin it.

You not supposed to invert the tank unless your in cold weather, your supposed to start the stove with the canister upright once the stove is hot you can invert it, but you only invert in cold temperatures…

I have not had a close look at the Lava stove but I do have experience with the MSR Dragonfly it has a similar ignition process. Most of these stoves will give a bit of a wierd burn initially burning off assembly lubes and polish from the manufacturering processes. When preheating any of these type of stoves you will get a bitter of a puff you are after all are setting a match to a pool of gasoline. Watching you preheat the burner with the petrol I belive you may have a bit too much fuel in the wick, and by lighting the burner from the top you may have not ignited the wick at all thereby boiling the fuel off the wick making that combustible cloud under the stove. Try lighting the wick from the large hole at the back instead of the top you should get a better preheat.

No I wouldn’t bother because for that weight you could carry a lightweight gas stove (mine is 43g) plus an alcohol stove and it would still weigh less, you would likely be able to get alcohol or gas canisters anywhere in the world for the most part.
@BrokenBackMountains
@BrokenBackMountains 8 ай бұрын
There is a place for petrol stoves if you are going out in proper winter conditions. When it is really cold or at altitude your propane/butane mix stove won't work well and the alcohol stove will need preheated.

Ditch that. No preheater so the fuel doesn't vapourise. It is dangerous. There should be a preheater tube going over the burner. Not fit for purpose.

It appears to utilize the burner block as a heatsink just as the MSR Dragonfly. I think he over fueled the priming wick and by lightning the stove from the top he boiled off the fuel in the wick under the stove making a combustible cloud below the stove. There may be slight error or lack of detail in the instructions.
