I’ve built an enclosure for every animal I’ve bought, and it all started because I bought a savannah monitor(yeah I’m that guy). But I cannot stress enough how much you save by building your own. Buying the Savannah got me learning tons of stuff and it’s been a blast.

I started with a female Argus of the New guinea Horni (smaller of the two types), Her name was Edna and she lived eight years until she got sick from female complications unrelated to being eggbound. She was such a big part of my life and I will get another once I can move into a house. I shared my room with her home which was 8 feet long, 5 feet wide and 6ft tall. I had little space left but I could not give her up having been forced into moving into a smaller but very large apartment. I now just draw monitors since I know I cannot realistically afford one with my mountain of college and living debt. I never thought I'd get Edna, so maybe there will another in my future.

I bought my Black throats 4mo ago, my male has grown a full foot in that time and sits a bit short of 4ft currently. I think the grow tent issue could be resolved by buying non cheap tents that you currently have them in. I have my BT's in an ACinfinity tent of which you are familiar. Their claws tear me up when they come into contact with my skin so are sharp as hell, and there is no damage to my tent liner despite them climbing against it regularly. I mean literally 0 damage.

Monitors are very intelligent and calculating critters. I honestly wish you had a tame one so you could see how absolutely amazing they can be and a joy to work with. Almost all of my monitors had defensive behavior when I got them and if you put the work in they chill out quick and same goes for the opposite if they are already chill and you spook them or grab them weird they remember and you have to start all over again winning their trust. I used to keep a huge variety of snakes, lizards, spiders and other critters from harmless to deadly. But once I tamed down my 1st monitor almost 30 years ago which was a crazy Nile monitor a lot crazier than those Argus monitors in this video and everything changed. Now I’m a monitor nut 🤷‍♂️and want to share my passion for these amazing animals that are often misunderstood and neglected I’m not saying you neglect them🤦‍♂️. They are constantly scanning and calculating everything around them hence why they are amazing and successful predators. I like to try and think from there perspective when interacting with them. Like how I look bringing food to them or messing around in their enclosures which looks dirty to us but they don’t understand that. They see a giant possible predator in their safe place and if your monitors are defensive they most likely feel like they are on constant alert and don’t have a safe place. I hope you’re not taking this the wrong way because I know your a great reptile keeper and monitors aren’t your strong suit and you remind me of my younger self and your passionate and committed. Just trying to give you insight and gained knowledge from years of experience and would 100% love to see you enjoying the full potential of one of the smartest reptile species we can own. And I know you’d love to have your monitors out free roaming the reptile room while you clean or just to watch them in their glory and be able to handle them without injuries to them or yourself. It’s possible bud and I know you can you just need to dial it back and take some baby steps to win them over. Wow I wrote a lot 🤦‍♂️ and wish I lived closer to give you some in person tricks because I know for a fact with some time you could have some of the most amazing animals to be amazed with and excited to work with everyday. I hope this helped in some way and don’t take it the wrong way, ether way keep up the great work and always enjoy watching 🤘🏻

At this point with the current housing situation I dont think ill tame them down. Its impossible to all the stuff we are here and find time to head to the building and work with them. Just another reason why we need to get to NC. Having everything back in one place will make my life a hell of alot easier.

Too late, I regret nothing! Unearthing the water bowl every day was definitely the biggest annoyance, had to get creative with burying a hide to hold it up mostly over the substrate then use some climbs as frame work holding it in place. That and my boys a little liar, always acting like he's hungry even if he's bloated from the large meal he just ate.

My permanent fix is going to be making a frame out of 2x4s and using a heavy duty bin with a lip, nestle it in so the lip of the bin rests perfectly on top of the frame with the frame holding it all up over the substrate by about 8 inches. It'll look sort of like a table without the top, both things being easily removed and cleaned. Something like that has worked in the past for my Niles and water monitor, but for now the argus is a hatchling in my "hot" enclosure that's no where near the size the adult enclosure will be... project for a later date that's coming up fast hahaha. Hopefully by then lumber cost might actually go back down and I can return to my projects without spending 2-3x the money the same builds used to take 😑

@@michaelperry8054 I’ve been building a 6x4x4 for my 10 month old Argus. I’m making it all out of osb & 2 by 4’s and liquid rubber sealing the entire enside. Sliding front doors and removable tops that sit in the frame. Lamps are on top of heavy grade chicken wire that’s enclosed all around top and bottom with wood so it’s extra sturdy! It’s been working great for me so far

I think you have to keep things in perspective. A dog shits twice a day and you have to pick that up in a flimsy plastic bag. You have to walk it 4 times a day. You have to invest hours in training, it's destroys your house, can't be left alone, and is much more expense to feed than a argos. I would rather be biten by an argos than a similar sized dog. Yet most people think dogs are reasonable pets. Many people are willing to sacrifice hours of their time training and walking them, willing to have their home wrecked, their holidays plans disrupted etc. A dog is the benchmark, anything easier than a dog is effectively a easy to look after pet. Also I have seen many Argos' that can be handled and plenty of water monitors that hate it. I think this is more about the time investment, 1-2 socialisation per day it not something most people can commit to and most reptile keepers have day jobs and multiple other species occupying their time. Socialising any monitor is going to absorb literally all your free time and consequently keeping just a couple of monitors is a full time endeavour. Yet you see many keepers with dozens of species including monitors with limited social skills, the two go hand in hand.

@Cruor34
@Cruor34 Жыл бұрын
Few question 1) Why do you need an enclosure? Once they are a decent sizer, if you have a "babyproofed" apartment can you just let them roam? My Tegu just sleeps in a heated bed in the corner of my living room, (hardwood floors, he has a big matt to lay on and have grip) comes out in the afternoon sun to bask, gets a bath (he pees and poops there) and then lays in my lap or on my chest for a bit while I watch a movie/play computer games after work. 2) Can you get an Argus if you have a Tegu or will they fight? In my experience if you manage things right, lizards WON"T fight, but I'd hate to have them get along for months and then one day randomly come home to an injured/dead lizard. My Tegu is very docile, I can't see him starting it if I were to get an Argus.
