No way the M rating is what flopped the PS Classic. Using roms from the wrong region and forgetting a few absolute classics is what killed it. The NES classic systems included what made their consoles famous. PS Classic just included some games.

Nintendo was lucky enough that the vast majority of the classic games on the NES and SNES were all first party games. I have no doubt that Sony tried to get as many classic games as possible but at some point they can't divide the price tag between that many third party developers and still get a bunch of their classics. Square allowed Final Fantasy 7 for the share they got. No way would they allow FF8-9-tactic, Chrono cross and a bunch other of their games that they can easily sell for 15$ on their own. Same thing with Konami. They allowed Metal Gear. No way would they allow Silent Hill, Castlevania SOTN and Suikoden for the same share of the money. It's pretty obvious that most of the money went to get Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid. That didn't leave much to get the other good games.

What killed the ps classic was Sony doing a half-ass try. They used a open-source emulator and used the game's they easily could get the licenses for. Add to that they used the European version of the roms which made them run slow and play wayyyy worse then original hardware.

Nah.. what I was thinking was if instead of releasing the Genesis mini, they released one of their prototypes like the Neptune or Pluto variants that combined 32x and Genesis and or Saturn. That way they could add games from the CD, Genesis, 32x and Saturn era. Then, if they created an online store to add more games, revived Sega netlink games and also released brand new 'neptune' games as exclusives.. they'd own the retro market. I'd buy it without hesitation. Otherwise, not too interested in this. I can buy a raspberry pi, a case that looks similar to this with more games and from other systems for less money. It's cool but, meh.

They make mini, 8cm CDs, they always have. They hold about 100MB. That's enough for a few games. Although not an actual Mega CD game. But there are 8cm DVDs too! They hold 1.4GB, or two CDs worth. So they could do that. Rather than fanny about with miniature optical drives with all their expensive components, though, would be better just to put flash memory into something round and flat, a pretend disc. With a few contacts around the centre spindle, and some sort of notch so it doesn't actually spin, you have to put it in one way. Then it'd just basically be an SD card, or something like. Sure though, the 32X and Mega CD add-ons could contain code to modify the emulator. If the actual chip they're using can emulate those. The Mega CD is harder than you think because it contains a second 68000, actually faster than the Megadrive's own CPU. And they can be locked into sync very specifically, which means emulation has to be very tight, takes more cycles to run on the host computer. The chip in the system is undoubtedly an ARM system-on-chip, complete with graphics on board. So there'll probably be that chip, possible some RAM if that isn't included on the main chip, and some flash ROM to store the software and games. If the ARM is fast enough, and they're usually around 1.4GHz up to 2.4GHz or so, it might be able to do the 32X and CD. Yeah putting the extra code into the addons would give them time to actually write the code. They could even, if they wanted, put lines in the "cartridge" connector the mini-32X uses, that allows them to put a replacement CPU in it. It could replace the existing one in the Mini-Megadrive itself. It'd just mean running the HDMI and controller wires up through the connector. Oh, and the existing game ROMs could be sent up through the old CPU. Probably could be done. But probably would sell even worse than the 32X did the first time round. So not so practical. Maybe if you bought one, you could open the shell, remove the board, and put a Raspberry Pi or the like inside, with more and better emulators.

@@greenaum good ideas overal but i would just make the main console a bit more powerful to run the other emulations but put the keys/bootuproms and additional game roms of the respective systems 32x megacd into additional flashroms in the addons themselves, as for interfacing the whole thing why not use modern components for interfacing the whole thing like microusb or usbc inbetween those things.the emulator just has to be configured to unlock more features with the used addons plugged in. ie megacd (menu ) appearing with its games when the megacd is plugged in, in addition to the normal megacd/genesis main, and from there the 32x etc.

@@MadCheese1337 Your way would be simpler, if the main console's CPU is powerful enough to emulate the add-ons. But it probably is. And actually if they'd thought about forward compatibility enough to run extra lines through the CD / 32X connector, they could have thought to just use a more powerful system-on-chip instead. Then yeah you'd just need flash onboard the add-ons. You probably wouldn't use USB because that's a consumer thing. It's cheaper to just use a standard serial bus, something like SPI or I2C. They don't have the higher-level identification and protocol stuff, they're just fast serial ports. When you know exactly what's going to be connected, it's all that's needed. Certainly putting a flash chip in the addons would enable extra games. You could have tiny game carts for the same thing. But it would rely on Sega planning it in at the start, and apparently they haven't. It's a shame, wouldn't have cost too much more to have it as an option, even if they later decided not to go with it. Sure the version they went with is just solid plastic, but there's plenty of stuff in pound shops with circuit boards and connectors. By themselves they cost next to nowt. I suppose they're not going with expandability. In a way they're right, console add-ons never succeed, that's a rule. They always sell in small numbers, because they split the market into owners and non-owners. Games publishers can support the extra gizmo but limit their customers to only those who have it. Much more sense to publish for the base system so everyone can buy it. Though sometimes it can be worth going for the addon if your game's so great, that a significant number of addon owners will buy it. If this takes off and they fancy doing more games in the future, they can just release a second console. Though it's less profit than just sticking a flash chip in a tiny Megadrive cartridge.

@@horroRomantic444 and NBA JAM TE was another basically arcade perfect port, equal with ps1 and Saturn. If Sega of Japan had listened to Tom and stuck with 32x and left Saturn in Japan they would have lost far less money. 32x actually sold great till they cut it off for Saturn. Later NBA Hangtime was released for Genesis PS1 and N64 showing how Genesis outlived Saturn. If they had stuck to their guns on 32x we would have had a larger library of really great games for it. And Sega wouldnt have lost the public's trust.

Odroid does what the Corporatists and the Communists can't: make an affordable credit card sized micro-computer that can run free software and free operating systems, like Lakka, or RetroPie (Linux based), with over 50 retro consoles and Arcade machines emulated as well or better than the pay-to-play competition (Capcom, Nintendo, Sony, and Sega). Why pay out the nose for a small console that plays only 1 system and 80+ games, when I can have one for the same price or cheaper that can play loads of retro consoles and 10,000+ games? (Master Drive and 32x supported too on RetroArch).

To be fair, none of these companies put any serious thought into these mini consoles. A minimalist effort with a top shelf price tag. These companies, none of em put any thought into security on these things either, so what you're getting is old versions of emulator cores running on retroarch, for better or worse, with their own frontend, or one that they've commissioned. Sega was actually going to get the indie devs behind Blast16 to allow them to use their frontend, but ended up going with their own in house one, which is more basic. The "official" brand stuff isn't better than what has been around now for a good long while for free. You really are just paying a buttload for a fancy plastic shell with the official Sega branding on it. And also only getting a paltry selection of titles. Thank goodness that these companies don't even bother putting any fancy security features on these things, otherwise you'd be waiting a while for someone to figure out an exploit in order to add games and box arts. They could have made simple localization mods for about a dozen games that were Japan only releases to go with the world releases, and likewise make world ports of European and Brazilian exclusives where there were good selections to choose from. Then you would have at least 50 to 100 solid titles, many classics you grew up with, and many that you've never played before until now. But they couldn't even be bothered to care about you fans one iota, and just look at milking your nostalgia for easy profit. Well, I hope you guys enjoy those minis, but I also hope Sega will put that money to good use by making some great new games that they actually put a lot of thought and care into.

A Odroid XU4 costs $50 right now, and can play a few Dreamcast games, as well as Playstation 1, Genesis, Game Gear, Master Drive, Snes, Nes, Arcade emulation, and too many classic consoles to list. The C0 costs only $25 and can be overclocked to 1.8ghz for some Nintendo 64 and PSP emulation. You guys throw your money away. The only quality product you paid for was the plastic shell that the little SBC came with, with this Sega Genesis Mini. It's a nice case shell, with the working switches, but not really worth it.

I think sega missed a big opportunity with the add-ons by making them non-functional. They should have made the CD and 32x add-on as basically memory cards that would have a csega CD and 32x collection. As for the sonic cart, they could have made that with the region different games. So the NA cart would have the non NA released Japan and EU games and vice versa. It would have been really easy and inexpensive to implement.

Yes, it would have increased development cost and time a bit, but for their target market, it would have sold and they would have made a shit-ton more cash.

The main games like star wars arcade, snatcher, night Train etc would be hard to get signed off. Star wars probably impossible. Still leaves classics like sonic cd, virtua racing and Virtua fighter but not much else.

We really don't know too much about the build of the actual mini console. The cartridge slot may be non-functional. They might not have planned for something like this in the design stage, and it only came about after designs were approved, or something.

The Analogue Mega Sg may be $120 more, but it can also play games from it's SDCard slot (with a simple firmware update), including Genesis, Sega Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000, and ColecoVision. As well as original Genesis and SMS cartridges, as well as the ability to connect an actual Sega CD unit to it via the expansion port. Oh, and it also has a real 3.5mm headphone jack instead of a a fake hole.

The Sega CD did have alot of great games it sold fairly, and was out for a while so that was enough time for some really awesome games to come out and show it was worth owning, but I cant say the same about the 32X...it perhaps has only a handful of worth while games perhaps it's polygonal games like Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Racing & Virtua Fighter, and maybe Doom to simply show the Genesis was able to run games like that through the 32X

1:00 The Playstation mini bombed because half of the games were the PAL versions which were very slow, the controllers weren't the analog ones which were present by the end of its life span, and yes nobody really wanted to play the games present. I have pre-ordered mine as soon as it became available at GameStop. I will also be buying the Sega CD and Sonic Cartridge no matter what region they are released in and two 6-button controllers. I wish we could purchase more games for this machine (it's actually possible depending on how this machine was built). I would kill to get my hands on a newer version of a functional Sega CD mini (meaning it plays roms not CD's). As someone who reviews video games in mini consoles like the Sega Genesis Flashback HD and Sega Genesis Mini, I had no idea that the European list of games for the AtGames Mega Drive Flashback HD were different than that for the US! The U.S. versions of the Sega Genesis Flashback HD, both the 2017 and 2018 edition, do not have MahJongg Solitaire as one of the games included, yet the European version does. I'm impressed by the care and research you put into this video. Thank you... I hope the Sega Genesis Mini lives up to the hype!

I love my PS1 classic, once hacked it holds all the PS1 games I grew up with. I didn't have to mod it, autobleem is easy to install. I waited until it dropped to $29.99 and then picked it up. I'm excited for the Genesis mini and probably get one. One gripe is the controller that comes with the US release, they opted for a 3 button pad over a 6 buttons but still included Street Fighter 2.

If Sega was smart with the tower add-ons, they should have had the dedicated games built in within each add-on. 32x games for the 32x, sega CD games for the CD add on.

The Mega CD and 32X had some proper corkers of games on them, and I would be more inclined to spend the extra cash on the "plastic mega cd" if it at least came with some games. Thunderhawk, Dune, Snatcher (yeah I know), Sonic CD, Switch/Panic (loved that game), Road Avenger, Cobra Command... man list goes on for Mega CD... As for 32X well yeah alright there were only a handful of notable games. Virtua Racing Deluxe, Virtua Fighter, StarWars Arcade, Chaotix, BC Racers (although MegaCD version was better) and even that was scraping the barrel.

I can't wait, and am totally getting the official 6 button controllers too. I was a Sega kid for sure, and haven't been all too interested in the NES or SNES mini's... no history with them... though I can respect what they are, the Sega Genesis mini looks to have really knocked it out of the park with the games list. I'm legit, freaking excited all over again, like its 1991.... damn... amazing.

I need that full 32X+CD stack. It's so cool. Even if there's pretty much no gain in having a full Genesis 32X CD setup, I always loved how it looked like some crazy piece of alien hardware. Mushroom topped, lots of soft curves, and big. It exudes cool.

still have my gen 1 genesis my dad had bought me when i was 4. picked up a 8bitdo m30 2.4gh wireless controller with 6 buttons and i can say having the extra 3 xyz buttons are GAME CHANGING for street fighter and other titles. plus its wireless so that in itself is a great experience. personally going to pass on the mini as they just released most of my favorite games on the switch port which looks AND sounds better then anything my gen1 can produce...even with a working 32x attachment and my sound system connected to the headphone jack. (hate to admit it but thems the facts) All in all it seems like a fantastic product for avid and even novice collectors. So happy to see Sega still thriving and pushing out products with the nostalgia and retro factors off the charts. What a time to be a gamer
