What’s preventing you from making your game?

Organization, effort, and rejection prevent me from making games. I like to make solo games mainly for my personal use. And I like try to spend hours playing the games.

Made my 1st game, took me 2 years and it was tough work. Hardest part was blind testing the rulebook.

I don't think you need passion to do much of anything. I just work on whatever's interesting to me. I've had many projects over the years and I think very few of them were "passion projects". I was just working on things that seemed more interesting to work on than other things.

0:08 Here we go. Info that might be relevant to me. I don't mak games to sell. The process of brainstorming ideas is fun at times. I have a small collection of notes and concepts saved in various places should I ever want to push myself into making something. I've done games in the past as a teen, and younger. I've got a game fully fleshed out, and could be made into an actual playable thing, although I am not a huge fan of solo games. It's a solo game, and made purely because I figured I could make a better implementation of mechanics compared to a game I had bought was trying to do XD. My only question is, where the hell have you been so many years ago? I could have used your insights and added your content to my information cache. 1:16 I have finished games. I've also made 'mods' to existing games. The struggle for me is motivation/interest.

Years ago I was still learnin just like you! :P I find playing my game is the best form of motivation. Nothing generates more ideas or more drive to improve!

Dave, thanks for sharing your thoughts and expertise about the board game design process. I got idea to create the board game and luckily I found your video) As I see there are a lot of things to do and most of the important is playtesting. Do you know any tool which helps to write the game rules as a computer program, then generate bots and playtest the game using those bots?

I've found that finding the time between regular creative work and working on a game creatively, the stive for perfection is the main hold-up. You know when you finish up a project as think" if I spend like 30 more mins working on it" and that ends up as a 2 hour later situation!

There is something awesome about getting lost in a project like that. But like you said, it can be a double-edged sword.

I have been working mainly on one card game project since 2015 and its entire mechanics are still going through so many corrections and changes that currently I still have no idea where it will all end in the future

Maybe a weird idea/suggestion but what you can try is stop working on this game, create another one (or a few other ones) and then come back to this game to implement the things you have learned from creating the other game(s). I have not fully developed a board/cardgame myself (though I have some ideas thought out that I want to develop) but I have a couple years of professional experience in software development and have developed a couple projects start to finish and have learned that you learn more by working on multiple projects then by working on just one project because you then get to tackle more problems and come across the same problems multiple times, but from a different angle. This makes you both better at problem solving and gives you more experience to use on other projects. I do advice that you work on one project at once though because you can then fully focus on it and you force yourself to go on and fix things when problems occur instead of wandering of to another idea because that is how you learn the most. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t.

@@Martijn26719 last time i improved my Resident Evil 3the Board Game, cause the setup of this game had to be fixed. So i fixed some rules, ads single tiles exploration, and now i really enjoyed to play it more. Maybe improving my favourite games give me enough experience to create my own project..

Nobody will ever get to play my first board game. nor my second, nor third, nor fourth. Well nobody else will get to play them. My brother got to. The reason being these were made years ago (over 30 years), and the components were thrown into the bin. I don't know the order in which I made them but I can loosely describe each of them. Cops and Robbers. 2 players. Each takes control of either the robber or the cop. Robber had to loot money, and the cop had to stop them. Movement was based on a die roll. The board to play on was drawn on unwrapped/flattened small skittles boxes that used to exist. Easy pack up, storage, and modular. XD Super Mario Bro themed boardgame. The board was a loop, like monopoly, but you wouldn't buy spaces. Various effects happenedd when you landed on spaces. Used dice to move. Person with most points at the end won. City Builder. This game was a direct rip off from an existing card game. There was an intial card on the table that provided resources to neighboring cards. Players would, one play at a time, play cards to the table next to existing cards which would earn them points, but also generate resources or bonuses to future cards placed around them. You'd play a card then draw a card from the a common deck. Again, most points wins the game. Dungeon Keeper. It was inspired by the video game of the same name. The mechanics were loosely based around the design off Aliens Predator Customizable Card Game. Unfortunately I never completed this game. I made a prototype of it's basic design, with enough card to demonstrate mechanics, but it just didn't work well.
