This is why it bothers me when people say “I’m too self aware for therapy”. Overthinking can be just as dangerous as under thinking.
@Redcloudsrocks
@Redcloudsrocks 5 ай бұрын
overthinking is something else though. I know several ''awareness yoga'' people that funnily enough for all their talk of mindfulness and awareness seem to miss everything even concerncing themselves. there is no underthink, Just be, if you can't just be then you'll always be all over the place, One of the most peaceful, kind and calm minds I know is just some old dude drinking a beer and relaxing in the sun.

@@Redcloudsrocks I wasn’t equating the two. I was saying that people confuse being self aware with overthinking their issues, while still being unable to solve them. If they were truly self aware, they probably wouldn’t be stuck in that loop. Under thinking can be an issue for people as well though. I mean impulse control can be a big issue for people with adhd for example.

The whole point is over self awareness, the same as over thinking about one’s self. The point is avoiding being stuck in that loop which leads to depression, anxiety and such. It’s the same thing.

To those confused about the difference between meditation and dharana. Meditation helps you in becoming more mindful and self aware. But to control awareness you must train your ability to focus on it by practicing dharana. To those confused about how it is different from normal meditation, even the breathing method is different.... instead of simply thinking about your breathing yoy can chant 'ahum', breathing throug different nostrils and timing it etc. Just my personal experience

For anyone doing this with a candle, dont do it with the flame on. Or else it is called trataka (different type of meditation) and it involves starring at the flame of a candle and closing your eyes and seeing the image of the flame in your mind. You are forced to keep your focus at a specific point or it will fade from your vision in your mind. This trains a muscle in the brain for focusing, not awareness.

I have a dumb question. What's the difference between focusing on the music bowl or watching a movie? Both decrease self awareness, right?
@pattychan3941
@pattychan3941 6 ай бұрын
Well, the purpose of the singing bowl meditation really _Isn't_ to decrease self-awareness, it's actually to strengthen it so that you can point your awareness somewhere where it isn't being harmful and your brain actually keeps that awareness there. And as for the contents of the meditation, a movie wouldn't work because it's specifically designed to hold your attention, so it's not very good training in terms of awareness. A singing bowl on the other hand only has that sound, the feel of the bowl (if you're holding it up), and the movement of the gong/stick you used to ring it as you trace the rim of the singing bowl. So unless you really focus on trying to detect all the nuances of that sound, it's kind of boring, and your brain will want to wander off somewhere to search for more stimuli (which is where the training happens). A good comparison to make is that using a singing bowl is like doing push ups while using a movie is like laying on the floor and just letting it hold you. You might wanna readjust because the floor is a little uncomfortable, or maybe even find a different floor or a couch that's more suited to your lounging preference, but either way you're still not really exerting all that much effort.

@pattychan3941
@pattychan3941 6 ай бұрын
I can see why you think your self-awareness is the problem, but hear me out when I say I (and Dr. K in this case) disagree. The general premise of what he's arguing is that it's usually not the actual self-awareness that people have an issue with. Rather, it's the _spiral_ of 'self-aware thoughts' that that's usually so debilitating. Unless that first, _singular_ self-aware thought is so crippling or depressing that it would one hit ko you, it's more likely that the lack of control you have over your mind/awareness allows your brain to spiral into a multitude of 'self-aware,' depressing/deprecating thoughts that makes you crash and burn. Hence why he's suggesting fixed point meditation in order to help us train in the delicate art of brain wrangling. So while yes, the meditation he suggested does help clear out your mind for a bit, the real goal of doing this meditation regularly is to train your brain to actually do what you ask it to. That way the next time you have that depressingly 'self-aware' thought, you can decide that this train of thought is not beneficial and that your awareness would be best placed somewhere else, and your brain will actually move to wherever you place it and stay there. And even then, I think it's still a stretch to treat your self-awareness like it's a problem or like some tumorous cyst that needs to be cut off from you, because frankly, it's a lot more than just depressing, self-deprecating thoughts. After all, if you had no awareness at all over yourself, that would be kind of terrible. If you had no awareness over your body, how would you taste, smell, touch, or see? Or maybe you would, but without the awareness that those senses meant anything, how would you be able to function? How would you be able to move through the world without stubbing your toe or breaking an arm, and how would you know to go to the doctors for your broken arm without pain? There are already people in the world whose pain receptors don't work; and they have to be infinitely more paranoid of all the cuts and scrapes amd broken bones they aren't aware of because it's so much easier for an undetected wound of theirs to get infected. If you had no awareness over the shape of your emotions, well-you've probably seen or know the consequences yourself, considering the channel you're on. Massive explosions of rage, behaviors and thoughts from yourself and others that seemingly come from nowhere, etc. But even more tragically, how would you know when you're happy? What would it be like to never notice a hint of joy or satisfaction a single day of your life? Would life truly be worth living then? And what of the river of your thoughts? How would you know what it is that you liked or disliked? What your morals were; what is unacceptable in your eyes. How would you realize that the clingy partner you had was actually looking to manipulate you? How would you figure out that you deserve better than what life has given you and think up the plan to crawl your way out of there? So at the end of the day, I think self-awareness is a wonderful gift and part of us. It just sucks when that self-awareness tumbles into the dark, messy pit in the back of our minds and can't claw its way out (which again, is why we're training that awareness to be built out of tougher, more obedient stuff so it can actually get outta dodge). And at that point, is it really our self-awareneas that's to blame for our suffering, or the massive pit of self-deprecation that's been brewing back there this entire time? ...Apologies for getting a bit poetic there, but I hope you found at least some of what you were searching for. TL;DR: The meditation is meant to train your awareness to be able to evade the self-deprecating/depressing thoughts that make you hate your 'self-awareness' so much. And the short term effect of clearing your thoughts during the meditation is just a neat side bonus. I hope you have a wonderful day ❤️

Finger on forehead. Close eyes. Repeat. Who is “they”? How do “they” control the outcome ones of my reality? That finger indicates there’s only 1 person in this room. Do this every day for as long as you need until you realize you no longer need it. There. Video summarized. You don’t have to buy my merch, I don’t sell any.

Any advice for how someone with AD&D can do this?

It's just to do it. Your mind will wander more then average at the start which means you get more chances to bring it back. You basically get to do more of it and likely can improve to deeper depths a bit easier once you get over the initial hump.

First, you roll 3d6 six times and assign the results to the stats. Then you pick your character class and...... Sorry, low hanging fruit 😅

I dont get how too much self awareness is bad at all. Im super self aware, yet I dont find it bad. Then again Ive always pushed thoughts away I dont wanna think about since a young kid. So maybe thats why I feel its not bad lol. But that wouldnt be a self awareness issue, that would be an intrusive thought issue.

Or maybe you’re not super self aware, so your lack of awareness makes you believe you are 🧐
