Whenever I start feeling hopeless or go backwards occasionally with my dog's training, I come here and watch your videos to realize it's just a part of the process. My baby beagle, as old as Inertia, is still learning so much every day and our main focus is on self-control with her BIG nose and outgoing personality. It would be selfish to ask your puppy for a perfect behaviour 24/7 and deny the fact that us owners are also doing mistakes because we're learning about specific timing and anticipation. You make us feel humane and optimistic in training our mates!

I've learned so much by watching you train Inertia! She is a lovely young dog, a lot like my herding-breed dog. I only wish these videos would have been existed three years ago, when I got my shy little dog. :) How much easier it would have been to train her! And how much more I would understand about young dog's behaviour. Thank you for great videos!

Your videos have been such a help when training my new rescue dog Roxy. Although she is more a middle aged woman than a puppy, from what we can gather her previous people had little time for her, didnt do much socialization at all, and didnt do much training past sit and paw. From that starting point under a month ago where she was lunging at other dogs had no clue what down was begging and most other bad habits, we have come to the point where we have been stopped and complimented by neighbors on how well behaved calm and gentle she is. She is introducing herself politley to other dogs, even when they are not calm, her fetch is going well and she is a champ at staying in doorways. Thank you zak for making me and roxy the dream team of our nieghborhood.

Congrats! Just a few tips from someone who has had dogs all their life, choose to use this or not, this is what works for me: Exercise you dog at LEAST two hours a day. This means walks, outside time, and even indoor playing counts. Every once in a while, you can do one hour, but that’s ONLY if you don’t have time. If a dog wants to rest while playing, you can try and get him to play again but don’t force him. Keep a magnet/business card to your vet, 24 hr local vet, and poison control center. Trust me, you might need it. Get a tag IMMEDIATELY for your dog. My second dog got away after about a week, we just happened to get a tag earlier that week. This happened due to lack of communication and the squirrel next door. We found him after the next door neighbor called us. Start training your dog at a young age. My second dog was a rescue, so it was tough trying to train him, but it was done. Don’t push your dog while you are training. You probably know some of these things, but I just thought I would share from my experience. Also, if you rescue a dog, that is amazing. Really, thank you. Anyways, any dog you get, from breeder to shelter, is worth it. Dogs are amazing companions. Just treat them ethically, and they can be there for you.

@@TheFrontyer you don't need to approach people to socialise a puppy the best form of socialisation is just being able to observe the world and not be stressed out while doing so
@theothertoni4698
@theothertoni4698 4 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, socialisation isn't just "hey, here's a dog/person/strange sound". It's a process of careful, gradual exposure to a variety of situations, creatures and anything that stimulates the senses (sounds, smells, tactile objects). Socialisation itself is the way in which the animal learns to relate with these exposures. There is both good and bad socialisation. Good being where every experience is in time with the dog and made to be pleasant and as stress-free as possible and bad, where the dog is "flooded" with stimuli, going too fast too soon and not being in time with your dog's comfort level. By all means, socialise your puppy, but look for ways in which you are able to do this from home. Playing videos of dogs, people talking, celebrations will help while it's on a low volume, and even just letting your dog see people from a distance. I would argue this is the best time to get your dog used to people in the real world as nobody will be interrupting your training with requests to stroke them! This gives you more time to focus on your dog and let him understand that people do not always equate to attention, and can be a neutral stimuli rather than something to excite the dog.
@trooper5744
@trooper5744 4 жыл бұрын
You’re actually lucky to have a puppy now. Dogs will have to get used to people wearing masks. For older dogs, that’s very unusual for them- they are used to seeing our faces. So just practice showing your puppy that the mask is a good thing, and not something to be afraid of or lunge and bite at. When your puppy sees a mask, it will mean something good happens (treat or toy). It will become normal for him or her. Just have fun with your puppy. Time flies!

Thanks for doing this series, it's really informative to see these techniques used in a real world setting. I know a lot of people ask you questions about balanced training and/or corrections but where do you draw the line with restraint versus correction in terms of collars, harnesses, etc. what are your thoughts on head collars? have you ever worked with a dog that found being restrained by say a harness so aversive it could have been likened to a correction/ punishment (I would guess this would only be in cased of extreme anxiety)?

At 2:40 is the typical result you get when a dog’s needs aren’t met by the owner and the owner has taught the dog to follow treats only.. and even that doesn’t work, resulting in a dog that ignores the owner completely.

I love this series and your methods! We are following along with Inertia's training as we raise our new 10 week old pup. We are struggling with her jumping and climbing out of her pen, though. I don't want to just make it climb-proof, and rewarding her when she sits isn't completely stopping the behavior. Some recommendations online are to shake the pen and"scare" her right when she starts, but I don't think that's effective nor our training style. I also don't want to ignore the behavior by just covering the pen. We watched the videos for jumping on people but would love any advice on pen jumping! Thanks :)

@@justagirlandherdogs615 what did you do to get the behavior better?
@justagirlandherdogs615
@justagirlandherdogs615 4 жыл бұрын
@@katczu first before anything I obedience trained him an even off leash trained him with recall and an off leash heel so that I had control. Then I used a training collar to correct him every time he reacted to something then when he didnt react I praised him greatly and fed him very yummy treats. Also I did desensitization at the same time so I would fo very minor and gentle flooding to to that. For example I would sit outside of the pet store and in the beginning he wasnt even allowed to look at another dog so when one would pass and he looked I marked with no and stimed h the m on his working level on the e collar wich is a level the dog can barely feel at all. ONLY go up if you use the working level and they continue to stare hard and only go up VERY LITTLE. If you have to go up more you are doing too much too soon. He then started to become neutral to dogs and people and I worked his obedience in public like down town with people and dogs and cars nearby so it helped him to have a not caring, neutral attitude toward the stimuli even more sense he was around it so much and trains around it. Then when we go tdd to that neutral point I started counter conditioning and some BAT to change his emotional response AGAIN to think they were a good thing! It is important to get your dog to the neutral state of mind before getting them to have a positive association. Because it is hard to get them from one extreme state of mind to another. For example, If you were really afraid of dogs it would be unreasonable for someone to try and get you to think they were good all of a sudden. You would have to be around them at a comfortable distance to realize that "hey, they are not trying to kill me!" Gradually getting more confident and comfortable around them and getting closer and closer to them and thinking they aren't so bad. Then someone paid u a dollar bill every time you saw a dog you would start to think dogs are awesome! Makes sense? Then I started controlled and careful socialization. AVOID DOG PARKS AT ALL COST. ask neighbors with balanced friendly digs if they could help you socialize your dog and start out asking the pet store trainers to pet your dog because they know how to peg a nervous dog and pe thg him af the same time so he knows it's ok and give him treats. Eventually you will have a non issue dog that is generally friendly. But always advocate for your dog. Dont left anyone be disrespectful and invade his personal space and donf let him socialize with rudra digs to avoid set backs in his confidence. It's ok to say no and imagine how annoying it would be to say hi to everyone and every dog. He doesn't have to say hi to everyone everytime

@@katczu nice! Ya the whole process of stopping the reactivity took about 2 weeks but the desensitization and counter conditioning took about a few months so I'd say if your vigilant it should take about six months but you should always socialize and create positive associations for life even if your dogs isnt reactive. Roha R what you want to do is get the puppy and begin to socialize and train the same day. Create boundaries and begin to luring into positions but dont create a command yet just lure them then reward to build that muscle memory and when they’re older begin to put the commands together. (Oh and socializing means he dog can see another dog or person…they don’t have to meet them because that will create more value in dogs and people then you) walking by is still socializing.

I love this! The biggest problem I have with my dog is that he hates walks on a leash. Anytime we get him walking on it , he starts jumping up my leg and barking. How can I stop this? He's a chihuahua mix, if that helps.

hey Zak! What if you have a male dog that not only wants to smell places but also mark territory? Some places are more inconvenient for dogs too pee while others like trees are totally fine. How can we deal with that?

Why doesn't he use a focus command or toy to get her attention off the other dogs who are stimulating her. If she doesn't "check in" with him she's not listening. It's also funny that once he starts trick training she knows everytime she does a trick wether he asked or not she will get a treat. Smart dog.

Hi Zak, I love your videos; my 4 year old catahoula is allergic to most proteins and preservatives so finding a treat to use as a reward is a challenge. Most of the time she will listen to me on our daily walks, but occasionally still acts out if another dog is close by -- I am always careful around other dogs since there doesn't seem to be a pattern to her bad behavior. She always interacts well with dogs at the daycare, but it must just be about the leash or trying to protect me?

Can you walk her without any food? This must be very frustrating for the dog to never get anywhere without you stopping, turning or other stuff.

I'm sure this has been asked before but idk where else to ask, can you train a dog to potty indoors AND outdoors or do they conflict with one another? Currently pad training my dog indoors and want to get him out for walks / bathroom use too. Any insight is appreciated!

You need to USE the dog. A border collie need a proper job to do. Could be anything, like herding, searching, agility etc. Those dpgs should get a minimal of 3 hours work time each day (when fully grown). Preferably more. A good mix of mental and physical activity is needed. That usually solves all problems people have with border collies/mixes of them. After that you can just train the dog like you normally would to avoid barking

Exercise. Exercise, exercise. Exercise? Exercise... Exercise Exercise. EXERCISE... (Exercise) Please exercise your dog DAILY for at LEAST one to two hours, I highly recommend two or more, but if you can only do one, make the most of it. Not meaning to be rude, but if you can’t exercise your dog, you shouldn’t have one. That’s not just for you, that counts for everyone. I don’t mean to say you don’t exercise your dog, just if you can’t, don’t get one. (No hate, just don’t want more obese dogs, OR have a dog here with health problems.) Just so you know, Edit: I am no dog trainer. I just have had dogs all my life, ever since I was born, so I know these things. I just wanted everyone to know I am not as advanced as zac, even if you think in the slightest bit. It is his job, and also his life. Mine is only my life. Just wanted to help, because I know these things, but whether you use this or not, this is what works for me.

@@branfordfamilies8282 1 or two hours is not enough for a border collie. 3 or 4 ok is closer to it. Those dogs are on another level, even compared to other herding breeds.
