This is an incredibly simple man in the middle attack. You could teach a 14 year old nerd to do this in a span of 1hr max. Apple is not more secure, there are just much less "viruses" created for them because less people use them. These programs can be encrypted to bypass any security measures made by apple or Windows. One is not inherently more secure than the other, but the "hackers" will focus on windows because lots more people use that OS.

As a cyber security/Ethical hacking student, i can say that he's not doing anything out of the box. He is just installing the Remote Access Trojan (RAT) on your system to gain access. He is using the method called *social* *engineering* . You should be aware and careful about these things. Don't download anything from unknown sources, try to not click on untrusted link and use VPN to encrypt your IP address. I'm not saying you can't be hacked after doing these things but it could make you more secure.

The only reason this worked is because the hacker was Russian Actually this does seem like a silly "hack," but I suppose given a lifetime and fishing(phishing?) over a large population with tired and possibly tipsy hotel guests - it is quite realistic. If someone in a third world country can get sensitive details of just one rich businessman - that $1000 ransom is like a year's wage.
