Keep in mind that some building authorities don't want you to attach structures like patio covers to Fascia board either.

Nice to have a video with some practical options for us that have a good deck that someone just happened to attach to a cantilever.

As an engineer my main issue is of course the joints. The weak joints will fail as soon as you apply large bending forces to the deck. Once you place them on the concrete then the wood is resisting the bending stresses not the nails. Nice video!

Great video for home shoppers! A lot of bad decks out there....

I would love to send you some information on the very unique, yet slowly expiring deck that came with the house my wife and I purchased a couple years ago. Are used to be an engineer in the army, and used to frame before that. I just can’t wrap my head around how to save this deck and keep it safe for our kids, especially since it sits on a hill composed of glacial bedrock and till

The “easy” Lateral load connections “tension ties” that tie into the sill plate are difficult if not impossible to use with a cantilever. You’re back to the old school threaded rod tying into the joists. And these don’t solve the issue of the shear load on the rim joist. The upside down joist hangars are a neat solution. 👍
@gregvancom4 жыл бұрын
Yes some of those lateral load connectors seem a little over kill, but of course is back to they're probably a good thing to have whenever there is enough pressure to rip the stuff apart.

Where is the strength coming from in the blocking/notching method? Accuracy of the joints or the thickness of the mating blocks? Thanks greg
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
All of the joist are sitting on the concrete stem wall. The lapping joist are nailed together, but can't provide structural details about blocking strength or suggest that there is not a better way.

Excellent work Greg. I am looking for a solution for my the back of my house that has a cantilever in place. You mentioned the system that the engineers would love and I think you're saying if my original ledger board was a 2x12 and I decided to use a 2x10 then make a new ledger board into a "comb" to fit over where the joists meet? What to do if using same sized ledger board?
@gregvancom3 жыл бұрын
Just make sure you have a waterproof transfer between the inside and outside if using same size lumber. Most of the time the deck is a little lower than the interior floor to make it easier to create some type of waterproof or diversion so water can't go into the inside.

I have an example of a deck like this... Mine! The floor joists stick out from my house about 6 inches, and the previous owners attached the ledger board to it. Would you like a picture??

I would love a picture, but don't use them in my videos.

What about attaching the deck extension to the beam with joist hangers?
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
I thought I mentioned that in the video, but if I didn't, then it might add to much weight to the cantilever. It would depend on the building design on whether or not you could do it.
@strokerace4765 Жыл бұрын
@@gregvancom not the canterlever but the beam that the joists are on.
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
@@strokerace4765 The beam could be rated for the existing loads and might require additional structural support to attach deck joist to.

The meeting between two boards is a stress riser there is no tensile member on the bottom

The deck/ porch/addition will pull downwards on the cantilever. The cantilever can actually crown downward and the floor can become a crooked inside. This is what I have seen.
@gregvancom3 жыл бұрын
Yes, something else that can become a problem and thanks for sharing.

Will this cause inside doors to warp?

I don’t get why people use the house to support the deck when 2 or 3 more posts will do the job. There are almost always issues with water and waterproofing. A second story deck could just have some anchor points for stability. I prefer to keep the outside house covering intact to mitigate any potential water problems.

I here yeah, but some times a ledger will be necessary.

Come and visit my house! The front 35 feet of my house is built with about 6 feet over on both sides. Built in 1907, I guess they didn't know any better. The crawl space is wedge-like so the front of the house has no space and the wood is sitting directly on the soil. The max space is only 3 feet! Calgon take me away!

Thanks for sharing and what they say they don't build them like they used to, you say thank goodness.
