Hi Ash, I own several watches of different sizes. My wrists are large. And I wear both my 36mm Seamaster and my 44mm Moonwatch and my even bigger G-Shock G700 A. Because I love them. I just got a 38mm Tissot PRX as a gift from my wife and I love it. There are women who would wear chunky Breitlings and men who would wear a small Gruen Precision. My personal opinion: I do not care what Lady size or Man size means to certain people. It is nice to hear that you are quite satisfied with your e.g. 36mm Datejust. It looks good on you 😎👍🏻

I couldn’t agree more about the fitness tracker being a separate thing from a wristwatch. As you mentioned, I wear both, my watch on my non-dominant wrist, and the tech on the opposite. Some people seem to find it odd, but to me I see them as serving two distinct functions.

One thing that many lose sight of is that when it came out in 1945 the 36 mm DateJust was a bigger than average watch. If you look at the military watches issued during WW2 most were smaller than 33 mm which itself was pretty much the biggest watch you found on a man's wrist. Women's watches of the day were about 17 mm. The US specification for pilot's watches (made by three different manufacturers) said they had to be between 31 and 33 mm. In The early 60s most men's watches were about 33 mm so the 36 mm DateJust was still at the big end. Omega and other dress watches grew to about 35 mm by the mid 60s and by the mid 70s 36 mm was about average though you might see 38 mm. And now it's all gone crazy. And they now make watches in what were previously larger men's sizes for the 'women's market.' But to return to my original point the 36 mm DateJust played a significant part in the growth of men's watches

The 36mm Datejust is spot on for me. I never wear it loose as it damages the watch strap over time. I also have a Nomos tangente and that's a nice dress watch.

I went through most of my life not wearing a watch, until about 23 when I was gifted a new G-Shock which never left my wrist for the next 5 years until I replaced that G-Shock with a newer model, which remained on the wrist until my mid 30's. I had watches in my youth and teens, like a small collection of Digital Casio's, I kept getting one for a birthday and xmas of different types & models, had about 7 of them , a Swatch Watch and a hand me down Tissot, as well as having a uncle who was a big fan of Accurist and had a few of his hand me downs, I amassed quite the watch collection while still a teen, I just simply never wore them, except on on special occasions, where I'd favour the Swatch (As they were seen as quite fashionable and a teen status symbol at the time, a bit like the Apple Watch today. I didn't get into dress watches until I was about 35, I had lost a ton of weight (17 stone to just under 13) I had change my wardrobe to a more smart casual attire, Brown Chukkas replacing the trainers, Sports jacket & shirt replacing the hoodie etc, the only thing that didn't work with the new look was the g-Shock on the wrist, that had become apart of me for wearing it every day for the best part of 8 years. I passed a Jewellery shop in London, A 38mm Tag Heuer in the window caught my eye passing, they only wanted £300 for it, so I went in and got it. And I guess that started the love affair and addiction of Swiss watches, that continues to this day just over 10 years later.

Great video. At 8.75" wrist, I inherited my Dad's 1988 36mm SS DJ. It was too small for me. I traded it in for a 114060, which most would say is too small on me, but I think it's perfect and looked the closest to my Dad's DJ. The down the barrel view, it tapers around my arm, as a sport watch should. Jackets, sleeves are fine, as they slide right over. As I've grown on my horological journey, case thickness is my #1 dimension. I struggle to buy anything over 13mm. In the hospital, all older male patients wear a watch. All of them are what most would consider small, but I think it's cool. Majority are SS Timexes, with patina from years of use. This big watch era is a joke imo. I'm flabbergasted it has actually lasted this long.

I would agree with you sir, except when wearing a tuxedo, it would be wrong to wear a watch e.g. at a wedding, it would indicate that one doesn't want to be there and want's to be somewhere else, but eh wedding, the only exception when wearing a watch would be the grooms-man and the celebrant...

I was issued a Cabot Watch Company W-10 in 1978. Then I bought a couple of Rolex's over the years. Problem is, they don't keep good time and are ruddy expensive to maintain! Now I wear the CWC re-issue Mellor W-10 and when I am going into the field & required to be "double -rugged" I either wear the CWC SBS (has day/date) or CWC RN Auto Diver's watch. All worn on a "Pusser's" watch strap. Gave the Rolex GMT to my Dad. Still have the Submariner.

I fancied a 1970s style seiko style rubber strap and purchased an " Uncle Seiko" strap from the States. What a fantastic looking watch it became with a change of strap. The origional bracelet looks equally fab. You are spot on, a watch is a subtle hint towards one's taste.

I recently put a Omega seamaster on a Milanese strap, given it a while new look, which is much preferred by everyone. For leather I always use Jean Rosseau straps Piccadilly Arcade AD has fantastic selection of leathers, 1962 Seamaster is on a grey blue shark strap now for a little touch of je ne sais quoi at black tie events. Never owned a smart watch, never will! I have the oyster flex Yachtmaster, comfortable and good looks, prone to smelling though! Currently looking at a Cartier Santos, might be the do it all watch, dressy and classy for evenings and casual enough for business (suits and no tie) during the day. Means I don't travel with a watch roll anymore is my thought!

If your read Cal Newport’s book Digital minimalism, one of his phd students came up with a way to cut down her social media time wasting. She did it by buying & using simple watch. This kept her from checking time on smart phone or smart watch & getting sucked into wasting time. It also became a silent time management coach & kept her on time.

I wear a Casio G Shock. I'm a blue collar worker so I like a simple functional watch. It is solar powered and sinks up with the atomic clock a few times a week. I set it when I bought it and haven't had to mess with it since. I like your videos.

Good advice. Especially regarding sizes. Watches are not only style but also fashion. For variety, I also recommend wearing a fashionable smartwatch but be sure to not spend very much money on them. Save the budget for a proper Swiss Watch brand. These are really the one piece of jewelry that a man can wear. You must absolutely Love the design (take time when purchasing) when spending the big money. This way you will wear the watch for many years and so get your money's worth. Two classic luxury Swiss watches are all that are necessary. One is a sports watch and the other a dress watch. Be warned, it is very easy to become a watch collector!

My go-to is an Apple Watch with the aluminum case and the aluminum butterfly clasp wrist band. My watch face on the display is a "classy" looking style with the minute, hour, and second hands rather than going for digital numbers, slightly loose fit for the band, but not so loose it can do 180s on me and end up upside down. It's a practical blend between paying tribute to the older wristwatch (in my opinion) while not having a rubber band and looking like a high tech fitness tracker or other "utility tool", as you described them, and I like the convenience of being able to utilize basic functions of my iPhone in a hands-free situation. As for sizes, I recognize and appreciate your perspective on sizes, but as someone with horrible eyesight who needs glasses, bigger watches to have their merit in being easier for me to read, whether it's a smart watch or a traditional wristwatch. I have a nice traditional watch for those times where it's more appropriate to the outfit to have a traditional watch, but the Apple Watch as I got it is a nice middle-ground between being a usable tool, but being classy enough aesthetically to pull off in a casual or business casual setting. I did enjoy the video and appreciate your opinions within it. It was very interesting to hear your perspective on watches.

I'm a lefty, but I shoot and play drums right-handed. I wear my watches on my left wrist. Although it is popular to wear dive/sports watches with suits and even formal wear, I usually stick to a traditional dress watch for suits etf. I have some true dress watches in my collection, with a slim case, leather strap, and minimal complications, except maybe for a date. Although I do sometimes wear my Omega Seamaster with a suit. For weddings and funerals, I stick to classic dress watches.

For golf, picnics, going to motorcar racing, etc. I prefer a metal band because, as you say, perspiration will harm a leather band. The Ferre Milano Uomo Capri is just perfect for the occasion. For business and more formal wear one can't go wrong with either the Montegrappa Nera Uno or the Ferragamo Evolution. These are just my personal preferences ( no, I don't work for either of these Swiss firms ). I so enjoy your podcasts: not only informative but entertaining.

Watches are the main thing about which certain people get very snobbish. I'm glad this video wasn't about brands, despite watches from the Rolex/Tudor stable being mentioned. It's not necessary to spend thousands, and with the fashion for larger watches still being a thing, very high quality smaller vintage watches can be picked up for a snip. The only rule I'd add is that leather straps tend to be better for smarter occasions with bracelets being more everyday. Oh, and pocket watches - wear one with a waistcoat for real style.

My jeweler said it’s “a tuna can on the wrist” which made me laugh. I’ve found vintage watches are a good way to find watches with a proportional scale and understated design.

I've come to find lug-to-lug distance is more the deciding factor on if I pick up a watch, as case dimensions are more dependent upon use. For example, I prefer ~38mm case diameters for watches in general. For something like a dive watch or a chronograph, I want ~42mm. It's easier to read on-the-fly when I need to focus on something else. Lug-to-lug stays at 48mm.

Great video. I have a thing for turtle diver shape at the moment. At 44mm are a bit bigger than I should wear, but conform to the wrist nicely. I have a 46mm diver and it is too big, weighing 270 grams is crazy. A good conversation piece though, but not worn often:-)

With regards to choosing a watch that will sit comfortably on your wrist, lug to lug distance should not exceed your wrist width. To measure your wrist width accurately, you will need a caliper gauge - a low cost plastic version from that well known auction website will suffice. Your wrist width will dictate the maximum lug to lug measurement for a watch that will sit comfortably on your wrist.

I like a leather strap because bracelet straps tend to pull the hair out of my arms and hurt. When the strap gets damaged or wears out replacement straps are not particularly expensive and are easy to swap out

Datejust is more tool watch than dress watch. That said, it can be dressed up or dried down. For a proper suit dress watch, opt for 36mm +/- thin - say less than 10mm, to slide under a shirt cuff. Dial colour - white/silver/cream (not black) with leather strap.

Thank you, very nice video. I currently own 4 wrist watches (and 1 pocket watch). WW1 = my "go to" (Rotary) round oyster face with gold marking, gold surround, black leather strap. WW2 = (garage forecourt no brand) rectangular white face with gold marking, brown leather strap (I get many comments about this one). WW3 = (Skagen) round black face with silver marking, black leather strap (most expensive, least impressive). WW4 = (Timex Expedition) white face, green case, brown nylon strap. These meet all my needs ... no metal bracelets as i have significant arm hair. The only watch that i would add to my collection, if i could afford it, is an original, Doxa Sub300T dive watch, designed in collaboration with Jacques Cousteau. Trouble is, these seem to be pretty-much heirloom pieces now.

For business I sometimes have to travel to areas of the world that is not that secure or safe, which I why I have a Casio. I’ll give up a $20 watch with no resentence!but I may resists if a $20 thousand watch and get hurt, which is why I go with the Casio.

Very good point about the need to take lifestyle into account! Even if someone just likes to go for a walk out in the countryside and might get caught in a downpour or lightly knock the watch against a gate or something...well...leather straps and gold cases are going to be highly problematic in that case! BTW maybe Ash (as a former serviceman) can finally reveal something: is it true that soldiers have to wear watches on a regulation grey NATO strap as a requirement? Or is this just an urban myth?

Honestly have to say, that the size of the Datejust really should depend on the wristsize. For men like me with bigger wrists (about 7.6 inches-19,5 cm) the 36 mm looks lost. Even the 41 looks rather small, but wearable....

My co-workers are not watch people, and think I'm nuts to pay 3k+ for a watch. I like the idea of a mechanical watch (and my G-Shocks). But I like how it feels, and I am very fond of anachronism. Wearing a high quality watch makes a subtle statement about the person wearing it, whether they register it consciously or not. My co-workers and I might be doing the same task, but the guy with a $20 Timex makes just as loud a statement as my Planet Ocean. And I have to comment, Christopher Ward is really positioning itself to be S-Tier in its price range. I get more compliments on my Bronze CW than I ever have my Breitling or Aqua Terra.

It's an old model I was given as a gift several years ago by an old friend. I would imagine it is from the 1980's or possibly the 1990's. It's quartz and runs beautifully and has a classical look that really appeals to my sense of style. Shame they don't make them like this anymore.

@@TheChapsGuide Quite the fan of tank style watches. You don’t often see many of them about these days which makes them special in my eyes. Could I trouble you further by asking if there is a model name or serial code on the case back?

@@the_9ent I’ve just looked at the watch. Sadly there is no model number on the case back. Only that it is a Japanese movement and cased in Hong Kong.

I cannot bring myself to buy one expensive watch like a Rolex, they are the same price as a car. I wear a Seiko field watch as a daily, I have an Invicta because I think it is beautiful (it's a Seiko movement) I have 2 simple and elegant Citizens, silver and black strap, gold and brown strap and then there's my Seiko diver which is my beach and holiday watch, it's an old series but a classic design. So all up less than $1,500 Aussie dollars and different options and if I lose one or it gets stolen, no tears. The value of a watch is in my opinion less important than how wearing it makes you feel.

It seems to me that there is a quite large elephant in the room that is being avoided for some reason. It is my conjecture that women see men who wear watches as being not only stylish, but also having the money in their pocket to go along with the displayed style. Women, in general, love shiny things (i.e. diamonds, gold, silver, etc.), and are very attracted to them. These shiny items portray that a man has money, and women LOVE money, especially when it is being spent on them. I haven't worn a watch in decades, but I may just try the experiment of wearing a shiny watch just to see if women actually see me differently and are more attracted to me. This whole thing would be a game to me as I am not in the least bit superficial and don't want to falsely portray myself as being "richer" than I am. It just may get me laid, which hasn't happened in a number of years. And so the experiment begins! LOL! :-p

I often equate owning a single watch to owning a single pair of shoes. You're not going to wear loafers on a mountain hike, so why would you wear a dress watch on one?

I used to wear a good wrist watch because I had an uncle who was a matchmaker/jeweller, so I bought at cost price. I found wrist watches increasing uncomfortable as I got older, and now I wear a pocket watch, if at all. I would definitely not wear a modern high value watch because all those I've seen in shop windows costing £ thousands are huge and hideous with no class or style.

I am lost, without a watch I wear a pilots, watch, but you don't want me flying your plane. I wear a divers watch I cant swim. I wear a watch with my Tuc, so I know when to leave. Larger watches are better with a snug fit, but smaller and lighter you can wear much loser I am not sure Rolex are an "understated" brand, more of a muggers paradise device? Always buy on the bracelet if you can (if you ever want to re-sell) and there are some great strap suppliers

Nothing wrong with a 36mm. If you think it's too small then you are absolutely compensating. Ash - I absolutely could not disagree more with you regarding which hand to wear your watch on. It is a simple matter of preference. End of story. - I am left handed and wear my watch on my left hand, and it has _never_ been an issue. To wit, I would think it feels awkward and clumsy wearing something valuable on one's non dominant hand - the risk of bumping into things is far higher.
