Great video! I have a small collection of watches that I have bought or inherited. The mechanical and automatic ones do require upkeep and this is an additional cost to consider. The same applies to leather bands. If you invest in a good watch with a good leather band and wear it daily, the band will need to be replaced occasionally. The better the leather band, the higher the price. I’m torn between quartz and mechanical watches. Automatics are just too big and heavy for my taste. And I’m (not yet) ready to get a perpetual winder to keep a watch ticking.

thanks Maxwell! That's a great point that even a good leather band will require some upkeep. Yes, it definitely is a tradeoff of size to have an automatic watch. And it's tough since Quartz watches are so accurate.

A little pro tip re: leather bands. Don't wear them in the summer, or at least on really hot days, at least not on consecutive hot days. Good alternatives to a leather band is a bracelet or perlon strap or similar woven strap for dressy watches. NATO, canvas, rubber, silicone, or bracelet for sporty watches. Once I started doing this, I noticed my leather straps last for 10 years or more, rather than the 1 or 2 years they did when i wore them all summer.

@@martintanz9098 I went through several leather bands in about 7 years. I have a few casual watches with canvas or silicone/rubberized bands. I prefer the canvas, because I can change the bands on a daily basis or as needed. I usually only wear the leather ones in the evening or if I need to “dress up” in the summer.

@@FlatMax2 leather can look dressy or casual. Canvas is very casual, as is rubber. I actually prefer leather, except on hot days, when it isn't the best. I find Perlon straps are the best summer alternative to leather on dress watches. Though a nice bracelet isn't bad, either.

I think it really depends on what you want to spend. Most likely, you'll be getting a quartz watch. So beyond that, you can look at the other considerations I mention in the "Factors to consider when choosing a watch" section at 8:28. If you're willing to spend a couple hundred bucks, the sponsor of this video, DAEM makes really excellent quartz watches. But there are many other choices out there as well.

Once one gets into horology, quartz movements tend to become less attractive. Also, an Apple Watch (not a watch actually, more a computer) has no soul. When I see someone wearing a fine mechanical watch, I immediately know they “get it”. Just my opinion.

I think it's because it's easy to appreciate what it takes to build a purely mechanical movement for a watch, but very few people actually realize how integrated circuits are complex and advanced - even the relatively simple ones used in quartz analog watches

@@jonathanl2748 and, the longer you are into mechanical watches, the more you see they are all sort of the same. At least the modern ones. Variations of the ETA 2824, or its Sellita clone, the SW200. Or, you want Asian made. Welcome to the world of the Seiko NH35. If you are going with an inexpensive mechanical chrono, almost guaranteed you will be rocking a Seagull movement. So, if you want old world craftsmanship, be prepared to spend a lot of money.

I have traveled overseas for many, many years. It was early on that I observed whenever I got on a plane to travel a good distance - my quartz watch stopped even if the battery was recently replaced. (I never wanted to take one of my mechanical watches on vacation with me.) It actually became a 'joke' to see how long my quartz watch would work while on vacation before something UNNATURAL happened to it. I started taking back-up (quartz) watches with me with no greater effect. They seemed to all die for a variety of reasons. NOW, I take a 'swim' watch and a mechanical - and that's if I am being conservative! I am a chronograph fanatic - so my watches tend to be a little on the complicated/pricey side. My LOVE for wrist watches has only grown over the years and I almost always have a back-up with me at all times. My love for mechanical watches has increased as well - especially antiques. THAT's when you KNOW you've gone down the rabbit-hole!! Welcome to the WORLD of WATCHES!!

That's just a regular quartz watch. It just uses a rechargeable battery and a solar panel so you don't have to change the battery. It's not a different timekeeping technology.

@@Thedistilledman1 i just want to know about this one coz I always admired mechanical watches since 5 that i got my plastic watch. With quartz watches you never know where they end. The problem is that mechanical watches even if they have the sadisfy ticking, they still change the date earlyer/late and goes further in time. Light power watches like citizen are thick too but never failed with any kind of light...

Can somebody please help me. I recently lost my watch, a Citizen 'Work Watch' Its features were a very simple and legible face, reliability, and a little heavy in terms of weight. Anyway I am now looking for new watch and this is the problem. I am overwhelmed with options, and I do not know the lingo. What I want is a watch that (1) $100s not $1000s (2) has a very legible face (high contrast eg white hand on dark blue background), (3) has a second hand, (4) has no date function, or 'features' or any other complications (5) is reliable, (6) quartz movement, (7) the face does not have arabic or roman numerials - just the 12 lines. TIA

Nice video for beginner, but IMO a lot of misinformation. There is no special old world craftsmanship to 99% of mechanical watches, including some very expensive luxury brands. They are wearable technology just as a quartz watch or smart watch. It is just much older technology. RE: durability. A mechanical or automatic watch can last for decades, and can be repaired. And so your luxury mechanical or auto can be gifted to the next generation as a family heirloom. where as quartz watch is generally not repairable if the movement breaks. BUT, and this is a big but, on less expensive watches, the cost of repair might be more than the watch is worth, which practically makes less expensive mechanicals (generally anything selling for less than $700 or $800 retail as disposable as a quartz model. And, a good quartz watch can run for 10 years or more, maybe 20 years. part of the cost of owning a luxury or even near luxury mechanical is the cost of repairs and overhauls every 5 to 7 years. This is not a trivial expense. It can be several hundred dollars, or more for luxury brands. I am fine spending the money for a favorite watch every so often, but if you just want something to tell time and look good, maybe stick with quartz, or solar, which is a type of quartz, but with an extremely long battery life so long as you expose it to light. The biggest advantage to mechanicals is the fact that they are mechanical. Something that exists off line, and something that when all else fails, you can wind it up and wear it (assuming it has been maintained). And the advantage of quartz is, just set it and forget it, until the battery dies, 2 to 4 years from now.
