Really don't like how everyone's saying Maggie's at fault for 'abandoning' her mother. She went to school. Her mother didn't accept her for who she is, said she should be like her brother. That's pretty toxic stuff, I would have walked away for a while too. Why is no one mentioning that Maggie didn't listen to that voice mail cause it started with "it's mom, ugh I don't know why you always do this!" That doesn't sound very nice to me. Why is no one mentioning that the brother could have stepped in and said something like "hey! Mom really misses you, let's listen to that whole voice mail together, give her another chance" but nothing. Why is all the responsibility to mend the relationship with her mother on Maggie?! The full saying of 'blood is thicker than water' is "the blood of the convent/battle field is stronger than the water of the womb" family don't get special privileges to be toxic in your life.

Very well said. I found the part where they all said "should somebody find Gabe?" so judgemental and disapproving and it made me sick to my stomach. Like who are these people to come and act like that? Sure she might not have been around but like there is always many sides to a story and they placed themselves higher in the family realm than the actual family realm.

@@moniquevandeplas5210 honest to God, everyone was terrible to her. I hated the part when the brother, Gabe, said "you have no right!" When she was looking at her mums stuff. Excuse me? She was Maggie's mom too regardless! Very toxic people.

The brother acting as if she weren't allowed in her own mothers room really chapped my a$$. Morally speaking that was just as much her mom and depending on the will etc. she has the right legally as well! Just because he took care of her while sick doesn't give him the right to dictate what his sister is allowed to do

yeah i hope people get that she has nothing to feel guilty about and that's kind of the whole point of the ending. that last act of manipulation almost made her accept that she is who her mother makes her out to be but remembering what she said when she walked away reveals that there's actually nothing to take responsibility for behind that guilt she was made to feel. she's still able to empathize with her mother and feel sad for her without feeling sad the way her mother wanted her to. she likely just started mourning her mother the way she was before she perceived her as "already dead"

@lala_lakeypoo
@lala_lakeypoo 2 жыл бұрын
Damn this really spoke to me..My mom was my absolute best friend and even 8yrs after her death I still am haunted by the guilt, even for the tiniest of things.. Before her operation she wanted me to snuggle in bed with her "one last night". I said oh don't be so negative, we have plenty of chances after you recover. That night I accidentally fell asleep on the couch.😔 I should've gotten up early and rode with her to the hospital but I hit the snooze button instead. By the time I got to the hospital she was headed into surgery and I only had time for a quick hug & I love you. That was the last time I would embrace the person I loved more than anyone in the world. The look of fear and desperation on her face has been seared into my memory. After she died the guilt I had about not taking things seriously ate me alive.. still does. What I would give to go back and redo that last 24hrs. I ALWAYS tell people to talk to their loved ones as if it's the last time. 🖤

So sorry for your loss. I lost my mom too. I carry the guilt, I had asked her to go to the ER and shesaid no and I didn't push. I should have pushed. The doctor who performed her autopsy said she could have lived if she sought help sooner.
@lala_lakeypoo
@lala_lakeypoo 2 жыл бұрын
@@maroonforsyth7011 I'm so sorry to hear about your loss as well. I think it's common for survivors to feel guilt in one way or another. My situation was kinda the opposite, she chose to do the risky surgery to get it early and it ultimately killed her.... whereas had she done chemo instead or even nothing at all, I could've had years left with her. She asked and I didn't tell her how I felt about it because she seemed so sure, even though inside I HATED the idea. I knew it was too risky. I should've said something... and I should've stayed up with her that night and rode with her to her operation appointment. Spent the last few minutes I could with her. But I didn't.. and I feel so guilty about all of the things I didn't say or do. I thought I had more time. Hindsight is a b*tch. Your story honestly makes me feel less alone in my worries, so thank you for sharing. At the end of the day our moms made their own choices and who's to say they would've listened to us anyway? I try to stay somewhat positive because I know she wouldn't want me beating myself up over it, but damn is it hard.. I hope you are able to find peace and healing in your journey through this life❤ oh & thank you for the cathartic little therapy sesh. Lol

I know this pain she felt as she heard the voice mail. One part of this pain is to hear somebody dead again. I feel this pain if I see something from my dead father like pictures of him and his old items. The second part of the pain is that she felt a little guilt because she never called back and their last conversation was a fight. I felt this pain too because I just said goodbye to him for the day but not forever. This is a sad story and people who lost somebody important can feel the story. It's a awesome story❤️💯🌟

This hits home. I have a broken relationship with my mother and I can relate to Maggie. I think many victims of abusive and narcissistic parents can too. At times, Maggie wonders if her mother was really a bad person after all and, now that her mother's passed, Maggie feels guilty for leaving her. However, the things that her mother has said and done still haunt Maggie. Maggie's brother is a constant reminder of their relationship, as he appears to behave exactly like mom. It's hard to accept that parents can be monsters, but I think Maggie did accept it in the end and now she won't be haunted by her mother's wrongdoings anymore.

My mother died 11 years ago at 87, and for all that time, she wanted me to have a different profession, different hobbies, etc,. and I wanted her to be more of a warm tuck you in or serve milk and cookies person. (I wanted Mrs. Brady but got Maude.) Truth is, we were both true to ourselves and couldn't pretend just to please the other. Nor should we have. We BOTH erred in not accepting early on that we just didn't get what we wanted, and accepted each other for the people we were.

Reading the comments, it seems like there's a divide between toxic parents and making up with your parents and siblings before its too late. Both sides make great points, and honestly, bith sides are valid. Personally, I'm at a crossroads between the two. I grew up in an extremely conservative household, where my dad was a missionary for our church, and my mom, grandma, and siblings (except for my brother, especially as he grew older) were/are extremely devout. I still live with my parents. Everyday is a constant mental battle for me. I stopped going to church a long time ago, cut my hair short, got tattoos, and am basically trying very hard to live my life as I see it. I got a great job without finishing school, doing what i love, but my dad just said, "i dont understand why you have to go work so far away." My mom and I were constantly arguing, until recently when I just got so tired of the shouting matches, that when she tried to begin an argument, I just shut down and didnt respond. Watching this short made me cry. It's so hard. I get Maggie. But I get Gabe too. I love my parents so much they sacrificed a lot for me and my siblings. But they've caused me so much pain as well. Its a constant confliction that i deal with.

Glad I had a napkin near by cuz I needed the tissue. Also, such a rollercoaster of emotions from the horror, sadness, guilt over harsh words, anger at her mom's words, & the callous treatment from the guests & brother. It was a well told story.
