I’m 63 now, this song was always my favorite on this masterpiece of an album, a close 2nd is Shattered. I grew up in west central Illinois farm country, my father and I were hard on one another as we worked together. One day, probably ten years after this record came out, he chuckled and recited the first verse of this song, and said he loved it. It was one of those small yet big breakthrough things that saved our relationship over the years. RIP Dad

I was twelve and still living with my parents in the East Bay when I got this album in 1978. Probably bought it at "Banana Records" in downtown Oakland. I remember thinking the name-drop of "Bakersfield" on this song was pretty cool considering my mom grew up there, and we spent Thanksgivings, Christmases, Easters, Summers, etc., visiting my maternal grandparents at my mom's childhood home there on Alder street up until the early 1990s.

Favorites from this album are this song and Miss You. Can't pick one because it's not the same genre... which says a lot about their talent. An "arrangement" to meet a "Far Away Eyes" girl who might take off with a truck driver if you're "late", has quite a different meaning to me than many comments here.

My very first concert was the 1978 Some Girls Tour for this album. Anaheim Stadium, festival seating, 100,000+ people. Stones were 5 hours late. Peter Tosh opened (member of Bob Marley's Wailers). It was a long day. Too long, but a good show. I paid $12.50 for the ticket. I have not seen them since and would NEVER pay the kind of insane money charged now to see the Stones or any band with the exception of a Led Zeppelin reunion!

We were stranded out in the boonies had to call my friends parents to come get us. We didn't know we were talking in slow motion, his mom said to him, look what you've done to Brenda! One of the best songs by The Rolling Stones, it's the best of two kinds of music...Country AND Western! You must watch the video for this song..without the video DOES NOT DO IT JUSTICE.....it really brings out the parody of this song..and is a take-off on religion...which I found quite on point...and the expressions on all the band members are worth admission...it is that good..MICK'S facial expression alone is a must see....The Stones originally started by idolizing many of the famous black singers off the south....muddy waters, chuck berry, howlin wolf,,,,and learned much about the blues.....in fact Mick would order these albums from America and that impressed Keith so much they got together....and when they hooked up with Brian the nucleus of the stunning stones was born adding Bill on bass and Charlie on drums...and has been total magic since... By the way after all years the Stones have received a bit of criticism for BROWN SUGAR LYRICS and nothing could be farther from truth....Once they started receiving some fame they were instrumental in getting some of these black artists or genuises on TV for first time as in those days there were lots of rednecks running tv stations.. In fact the Stones refused to play an event in the American south due to audience being segregated...and to the Beatles credit they did too... Moreover the Brown sugar lyrics use the word young girl and black girl interchangeable and the brown sugar refers to heroin...commonly called smack... BOTTOM LINE...Mick also idolized James Brown and would try to imitate his moves in early days until he hired his own instructor... There is absolutely no chance of Stones and most British 60's bands of being prejudice...Thankfully they were not growing up with some of the rednecks in the American South at that time...and they loved these black artists... Just go back and review the records and you will see... Kudos to Beatles as well

Ron Wood plays the pedal steel guitar on this and does a bang up job of it too! "Far Away Eyes" was the B-side of the single "Miss You", which went to number one in the U.S. charts in 1978. Disco, rock, country all mashed together on seven inches of vinyl that sold for a buck! The blues feel is what the Stones bring to what otherwise was supposed to be send up of what in country music was called "the Bakersfield sound", typically associated with Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, in contrast with the music produced in Nashville, Tennessee. The opening line about Bakersfield suggests it along with the steel guitar licks punctuating the song. The Beatles famously covered the Buck Owens hit "Act Naturally" on their 1965 album "Help!". Remember "Honky Tonk Women" and what you termed "barnyard rock"? This is more or less an extension of that in line with a batch of other tunes from over the years -- "Dear Doctor" from Beggars Banquet, "Love in Vain" and "Country Honk" from Let It Bleed, "Wild Horses" and "Dead Flowers" from Sticky Fingers, "Sweet Virginia" and "Torn and Frayed" from Exile on Main St. The Rolling Stones were from London and part of the "British Invasion" in the sixties. But American music was their forte -- blues, rock, country, gospel.
