the line you like about being a Christian tonight, ma'am is because I'm pretty sure Marc Cohn is Jewish. Reverend Green is in reference to Al Green, a truly great singer who is now a minister. Great song!

Marc is definitely Jewish and didn't know a number of the christian songs but he got into it. When they finished Muriel said you can go write your songs now. He when to Memphis because he had writers block and thought Memphis might get his muse back, boy did it, he wrote this song and many others. There is a live KZbin video where he tells this story before playing the song, this though is the better version as it is the studio version.

Ron, as an atheist...things like this, also confuse me. I find my car keys after a frantic 3-hour search.....and babbling thanks to a forgotten, still-ingrained-in-my-psyche-kinda, entity. Beale Street was a place where Mississippi blues men could test their craft in a city. The street had performance bars and a diverse night life. The street was located in an African American part of a segregated Memphis in those days. Blues singers went north to Beale or south to New Orleans, the nearest cities. Beale St has become touristy. You can still hear the blues live but the audience will be mostly white. Joni Mitchell wrote a song about the transition of Beale St in her song, Fury Sings the Blues. Fury Lewis was the last living member of the WC Handy band. The song describes her meeting Fury Lewis in Memphis. Fury has since passed away.

I live about a 1/4 mile from the W.C. Handy birthplace in Florence, AL. Our biggest local music festival every year is the 9 day W.C. Handy Music Festival that typically features 150+ artists in pretty much every restaurant, park, and venue in our small city.

Very much related to this song and the Memphis music scene, Sam Phillips, also from Florence, AL, was the founder of Sun Records and Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where he produced early recordings by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Howlin' Wolf. Sam, as a producer, was instrumental in coaxing the emerging genre of rock and roll out of R&B and country artists, including what is considered to be the first rock-n-roll song, Rocket 88, written and sang by Ike Turner's band Kings of Rhythm. Previously, Sam had been a radio DJ at WLAY in Muscle Shoals, AL, and was one of the first to play white and black artists on the same station.

I think this is his love letter to Memphis - he was suffering writer's block and went down to find inspiration, and he found it. Memphis brought his spark back. And Elvis was from Mississippi, if I remember my music history right. He moved to Memphis to record at Sun Records and Graceland was his home; he's buried in the tomb at Graceland.

Beale - which his feet were ten feet over - is a famous street in memphis. Yes, Elvis lived there. Graceland is his home, you can find lots of pics and things. He''s buried there. WCHandy called himself the King (or father) of the blues - was a very famous composer and musician.

The video would have explained alot. Every time I see that little girl out flowers at the feet of that beautiful Elvis statue in Memphis, it stood my heart a minute. Well, maybe not a minute, but I get a tear for sure. I’ll always love THE KING.

WC Handy statue is on Beale st, the home of Delta blues. Elvis statue is also on Beale St. Elvis spent most of youth in northern Mississippi but moved to Memphis as a teen. Elvis was discovered at Sun Studio on Union Ave, Memphis. His home, once he became famous, is named Graceland. It has a room that Elvis called Jungle room because furniture had a jungle look. Elvis died at Graceland and is buried on the grounds. One can tour Graceland still today. All of this is reference in the song. But Marc gets to the heart of Memphis, which is the blues and the African American heritage. Aside from Elvis, two things put Memphis on the map: Cotton trading and blues (morphing into early rock and roll and soul music which arose out of studios located in Memphis)

I had a religous experience seeing Elvis from front row seats in Knoxville with my Mom. It was April before he died that August. I was not a fan, hard rock was my thing. Within 5 minutes of Elvis coming on stage I was screaming along with 20 thousand other fans. Someone asked me later why I behaved that way. I have thought about it and acting like Elvis was no big deal would have been the really odd behavior. I am a fan by way of conversion as serious as any religous born-again convert ever was. Thank you, thank you very much, Elvis. I am a true Presleyterian.

"...with my feet 10 feet off of Beale." A reference to the legendary Beale Street (known as "the Home of the Blues") in the predominantly Black neighborhood where Elvis used to hang out as a teenager, soaking up the Blues and Gospel music of the Black culture. Having grown up as one of the few White kids in his own economically depressed neighborhood, Beale Street and the music scene there at the time was where he felt most comfortable. That environment was the embodiment of the "feel" and the music that reached deep into Elvis as if it was part of his soul. The lyric about the "Jungle Room", by the way, is a reference to one of the rooms inside Elvis's mansion called "Graceland".
@RadCenter
@RadCenter 2 жыл бұрын
Another one of the Memphis references upfront was "Put on my blue suede shoes and I boarded the plane." The song "Blue Suede Shoes" was a major hit for both Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, who recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis. The "Jungle Room" was a garishly decorated lounge in the basement of Graceland, Elvis's Memphis mansion.

Man I feel you on this one. I enjoyed your explanation of his voice "Sipping on whiskey and just smoking a cigar for a month straight....that smokey voice" Thats the rawest description I heard on his voice. The chills is definitely what you get when you hear this. Especially the part where he says "But boy (pause) ....you've got a prayer in Memphis" and when the piano kicks back in....AMAZING! WC Handy is the father of the blues. (He is called that by everyone who has ever heard of the blues) William Christopher Handy AKA WC Handy is a legend and brought the blues to a lot of people. If you were to ask any blues person who is father of the blues they know. There is a statue of WC Handy on Beale Street (Handy Park) right near Alfred's.

I had that same face when this song came out in 1992 when I was 17. I thought that this song was soul! I am a huge Elvis fan! My Mom met him in 1971. She was 17, and she said he smelled like Old Spice, and rain. She said he kissed her on the cheek, and said "Thank you darlin." I am so mad that I was born so late. I would love to see Elvis, the Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, and Ritchie Valens in concert.

Wonderful memory of Beale Street, walking down on a Saturday night, deciding which of the bars we wanted to go into and have a drink and listen to the music. BB King's place was totally full up. The way he sings this, it's like he went to visit Memphis and it turned into a pilgrimage. Like Memphis is the holy land of blues, and Beale Street was sacred ground. He sang it like he was TESTIFYING! Like Memphis had filled him with the holy spirit! He hadn't consciously arrived there with any of that in mind, which left him asking whether he was really feeling what he was feeling. Haunting song. It almost sparkles, like magic, like a miracle. I've always loved this song... There's a video of this, with the statue of Elvis, with Graceland, with Marc walking by Sun Studio, of a humble home and a humble church, and Marc sitting at a piano in the Hollywood. It's worth viewing.
