@@edblair5253 It is not all about price. The lack of information is what damaged the market. A rare Heuer is a lot more interesting than a new one but the giants of watches talk about the modern ones only. Most dealers went for the rare uber expensive inventory (new and old) and try to impress with every Threads/Insta/FB post they make. That is NOT what the mass wants. Who can afford a 10k watch? Make it 100k? Then look at the 500k range? The top tier market is not what keeps this whole industry alive but the man or woman who buys a Tag brand new or their only Cartier for a lifetime that is holding it all cohesive. Rolex in most cases is by no means expensive versus the higher end brands. I touch about 75-100 different brands in a year and am extremely versatile as a dealer. Everything sells for the right price and am lucky to be informed enough to touch everything from a Piaget to a RW, to a Heuer or Patek. 99% of dealers won't touch more than 10-15% of these brands and that is an other factor of the equation. If you walk in 100 used watch dealer's stores, 95% are a copy cat of the last. How can a buyer see what else exists if we don't give them the choice?

As soon as anything gets hyped as an investment opportunity, the game is up, and the carpet baggers will inflate values. The watchmakers, seeking increased profits start on the ‘limited edition’ bandwagon to drive some exclusivity, and collectors stockpile watches in their safes, rather than wearing them (not that they can, because in many cities they’d just get mugged). All of this cycle undermines the vintage market, which is still selling watches that were originally made as timepieces - not an investment.
@redneck4528Ай бұрын
Look at the reality of it the dealer has to make a profit on selling it so you are paying over market value when buying from a dealer, and when you sell you will be getting less than market, because selling it yourself on forums, chrono24, or eBay is really a headache. Asking prices are not realized transaction prices.

Speaking on the side of the consumer, it’s not that I don’t appreciate vintage. I actually like vintage styles. It’s just that like you said there’s so much you have to look into when buying vintage, and a minor detail can be a difference of a few hundred or few thousands of dollars. The average watch buyer just doesn’t have the time and resources to do all that research into vintage watches. Sure probably I’ll drop a grand, maybe a couple of grand for a vintage piece, but if I’m spending 5k, 10k and upwards, I’m sticking with modern watches. Maybe in the future when I have the time to do all the research, and understand vintage watches, and the market more, and I have more money to burn, then I’d look into buying vintage.

What nonsense, this will expiate the decline in the industry. If you need accurate time a quartz is unbeatable, but if you love watches then history, patena, watchmakers art does matter. New mechanical watches are great and if you bought one then telling the time is secondary to the looks or feel that a mechanical watch can give you, but don’t forget that vintage has a place especially for those interested in the history and story of the company as well as mechanical construction

Very good and informative video! People are mostly exposed to a few popular brands like Rolex (it's like everyone wants a Rolex), PP, AP and a couple of other famous brands. It's like fewer and fewer people would appreciate a pretty vintage Universal Geneve or an Omega Constellation. I don't have any watches being worth 50k dollars or 20k dollars, but I have a couple of vintage and original Omegas from the 50s and 60s being worth like 1000 dollars or maybe 2000 dollars. I'd rather have 15 perfect vintage Omegas or IWCs or UGs than having 1 Daytona. But of course I'm very selective when byuing vintage and I do know the most important things to look for. Water damage, repainting, non-original hands and so on. Lots of sellers try to sell you frankenstein watches or damage watches.
@RandyBarlow-fn8lo2 ай бұрын
I didn't watch your whole vid, but you talked about condition and why a service means your watch should be 2x more. Well sorry but that's bunk as the service is almost meaningless. Condition is more than that! For instance your Tudor Oyster Prince Tuxedo 7995/0 1966. Not only has the case been way over polished in the past. Where the Rolex symbol is even worn off the crown. The case is now severely pitted and scratched. Sorry but that's a $800-$1500 watch and not a $3780.00 watch. Why would I pay more for a worn out Tudor then a used Black Bay? The days of buy high and sell higher are over.
@timemerchantsmtl2 ай бұрын
@@RandyBarlow-fn8lo you haven't seen the watch in person. Crowns are all 100% visible and have hundreds in stock if one is needing replacement. If you know the rarity of a tuxedo, your 800$ claims make no sense. I would gladly buy them at 1500 Cad all day long if I could. 3780 is Cad prices too and am negotiable to an extent. A Wristwatchme strap is 125-150 Cad, a service + crystal + parts is always netting me 300-450$. That leaves little room when you buy 5 tuxedos a year and only 3 are resell-worthy due to a defext on dial or replaced rotors/movements. I buy close to 1000 watches a year and never ever list stuff that I wouldn't personally like to own in my collection condition-wise. Some had a harder life, some a much better one but doesn't compare to a 79230 Tudor that you can get any day on ebay or at a local reseller. 79230's are sold in a blink of an eye due to their size and appeal. A Tudor Tuxedo is not the same customer at all. A UG Polerouter in black is unobtanium at the moment just because it is UG, yet the Tudor Tuxedo is still a bargain in comparison.
@RandyBarlow-fn8lo2 ай бұрын
@@timemerchantsmtl Maybe you're bad at taking photos? But the only Tuxedo on ebay that sold for $3k+ looks like it is in 100x better shape then your watch. And can people really trust auctions and auction sites anymore? People have caught on to the price inflation scam that they run. If something doesn't sell or have any interest in it then it's simply overpriced. Rare doesn't always mean valuable. I have plenty of rare high end watches that are no longer in style and not really worth what more popular models bring.

I also appreciate the effort but it's very very difficult to follow your contents because you’re not actually saying anything………in my opinion

Too hard to follow you for any duration. Sorry to be rude. But too many words and too few pictures. This is not a podcast.

Why is he not holding my attention… maybe it’s because he sounds like he is complaining and going off on tangents and not getting to it. I’m out

I don't like vintage watches. To me they're just old watches. Vintage is just a pretty way to say Old
@timemerchantsmtl2 ай бұрын
@@WINDINGCROWNS It's like saying you don't like history, your ancestors or where we come from. From tradition to today, we are who we are because of our past. Watches are history, design, improvement.... You wouldn't be wearing your new watches by wiping the history of watchmaking. As soon as your watch hits 25-30 years old it is considered vintage. Life is short and time passes fast. Your new fancy watch will become vintage in no time.... Who will buy your watch with your mentality? You value it today but in 25 years from now will it be disposable?
@WINDINGCROWNS2 ай бұрын
@@timemerchantsmtl I'm saying I personally do Not like old things. Yes there is a market but it's not my cup of tea. I collect Panerai and yes as they get old they still look like the new ones. In fact a vintage Panerai would be cool because it doesn't look old. Old rusty damaged watches I don't like. Plus they are expensive and look terrible in my opinion. Just my opinion. Also I don't care if anyone buys my watch. I've been collecting for over 30 years. I sell most watches before they get too old. Never let them get vintage. Only watches I will keep are my Panerai

@@calindor19 I do have issues reselling GS watches lately. I usually pay 85-90% of what I can resell for and lost money on the past 4 sales. They are amazing watches but it is what it is. Economy is not amazing.

If i’m spending 5K on a watch i go for Zenith Chronomaster, 2nd hand, very good time piece, unappreciated by the general population, but i know whats there, i know the roots, and i love the looks.
