There’s a hard core of watch owners who will, routinely, sneer at this brand. A pity really because the reality is that their entry level pieces are priced keenly and very well made. Step up to £5k to £10k price bracket (although you’d haggle for a decent discount) and their Masterpiece collection offers some serious horology. As for the Aikon, it’s typical of a certain genre and not my cup of tea, but it’s no more or less derivative than far more expensive offerings from other makers who’ve drawn heavily on Genta’s design.
@retiredmogul Жыл бұрын
I was actually on the market for a Royal Oak around the time when the first automatic Aikons were released. One evening, whilst relaxing in my villa resort, I came across some photos and articles of the Aikon and pretty much forgot about the Royal Oak. I dedicated my afternoon to finding Maurice Lacroix ADs and viewing them in person. I'm not a brand whore per se nor do I subject myself to what others find to be popular (I buy what I like most), so I asked myself the simple question about which watch was more beautiful if the brands were not in the equation, and I frankly felt it was the Aikon for a few reasons, and soI bought 1 on the spot within minutes - probably my fastest purchase ever, having been a luxury watch collector of decades with dozens of models from various high end and independent brands. Till today, I own 2 Aikons in different dial colours and they still put a smile on my face every time I gaze at them. Their accuracy is +1 sec per day and 200m water resistance (4x the royal oak's at roughly the same thickness) allows me to do laps in my pool and water sports or diving in the open ocean as well, with zero concerns, which is something that a royal oak would probably not be able to keep up with, as robustly, for many years, and it does end up seeming a little brutishly boring after time passes. In addition, the overall bracelet links of the Aikon are nicely tapered from the side profile which is a very subtle detail, as well as the finishes on the bezel - creating a much more angular and contemporary character with added sturdiness as compared to the royal oak. The Aikon's engineering has proven to be rather equal or superlative indeed. The Aikon is undisputed proof that top quality can be had without overrated hype and opportunistic prices. It helps that the people leading the brand are also very sincere and nice.

I tend to find that buying a cheaper version of something just leaves me hollow, so I'd rather just not buy anything and keep the dream of maybe. While there is generally nothing new under the sun, with many watches borrowing ideas, something that is as unique as it can be to itself speaks to me more. Some of the mico Swiss brands produce some epic pieces for a fraction you'll pay for an AP, and you won't see them on the wrist of your neighbour.

I have a AP RO offshore 42mm limited and I had to buy an aftermarket rubber strap because the original one I cant fit in even the first hole.. It is nice to look at but it is even more stress to hit the corners than show off and nobody even cares.. So its in the safe most of the time.. The Aikon I bought a few months before and I even had done much more research and comparing until my purchase, but it fits like a glove.. It blings from every angle, hasn't any sharp edges, has a nice open caseback, even the waffle patten is nicer than AP.. But.. I dont really get used to the 'arms' on the bezel as MLC calls it that way.. They could have done something more subtle t be original in some way.. Also it's quite prone to scratches.. But ofcourse.. If u wear it.. It will get worn..

*Plot Twist:* none of these luxury watches are "worth it." They're all made from nothing special stainless steel, sapphire and brass and none of them can keep time as well as a $10 quartz. They sure look cool, but they're asking a big premium for a technically inferior product. Hell, for $500 all the way up to $2,000 you can get the exact same watches, same finishing, same details, same features without having to degrade your wife by offering her sexual services to an AD, _AND_ you'll have money leftover for a REAL investment product.

As much as we would like to, not everyone has the financial means to acquire a high end timepiece. Indeed, the whole point of "premium' watch brands is their exclusivity. Not everyone can have them. Not everyone is supposed to have them. That said, always buy the best watch you can afford.

When it comes to watches, I really hate the word "cheap". In the back of my mind cheap refers to garbage, trash or refuse. I rather refer it to as more affordable. It's more easy on the mind to know that I am still wearing a well above average brand than to wear a "cheap" watch.

Really depends on the consumer, for me the slim/integrated bracelet/oddly shaped/do-everything steel sports watch is just something that AP did first and now every brand should do to scratch that itch. When I find one that fits me well and doesn't bust my budget I'll get one.

I honestly think if you do a bit of digging you can find great stainless steel, integrated bracelet sports watches that don’t copy the RO so closely but have their own unique design language that make them more a stand alone piece and not a placeholder for something you wish you had. Examples such as the Zenith Defy skeleton and IWC ingenieur 3227, while in a different price bracket than the ML, give you access the stainless steel sports watch genre with great finishing, in house movements, and their own unique style still for a fraction of RO prices. I think it’s easier to justify saving up a bit more and spending $4500-5500 (pre-owned) for one of those pieces than $1500 on the ML.

Thanx for yet another great video! Not exactly my style of watch, but I like it :-) I own a Maurice Laxroix Masterpiece Petite seconde, and are always in awe of the details and feel of quality when I wear it. Why do brands continue to use sapphire case backs when they use a relatively unadorned movement? Give that watch nice solid case back and it changes to watch for the better.

I'd be more interested in comparing the more comparable than this, to an AP, such as the Alpine Eagle and/or the equivalent model from Piaget. I'm a little biased because I am currently in the debate stated above, but I'm sure others would be interested!

People need to stop comparing watches to the best of the best. Is the Aikon cheaper and lesser quality than a Royal Oak? Of course, but a BMW 8 series is also cheaper and lesser quality compared to an Aston Martin. Is that a good enough reason not to buy a BMW 8 series? Hell no. It's an amazing car.

Very nice, plus 3 seconds per day accuracy 👌. £1600 for the set or £1400 for the watch on a steel bracelet when i purchased in 2002. Prices have risen a bit as of December 2023. The set now retails at £2200 if you can find one for sale.😊

People who are calling an aikon a cheaper alternative is just looking it top down. An aikon is a splendid watch, mind you is also chronometer certified. You have to see it bottoms up. Someone with a golden spoon since childhood will never appreciate An aikon. For someone like me who started with a timex, rising up to Seiko to then a Tissot. I have the aikon in my list, someday will reach there and make good memories with that. May be then I target a speedy who knows. But the aikon will be there to tell a wonderful story someday just like the casio is still there to tell a story when I moved around in tuk tuk and skip hanging out with friends to save some money to get that timex. So it's not a cheap man's oak but rather every watch including the aikon is the story of growth. Also it has a splendid Clous de Paris designed dial with a sunburst blue, just a treat to the eyes.

I haven't been 'into' watches for long and only recently discovered the MLC Aikon quite by accident. Just had to have one! Very expensive for someone of my 'limited' means. I bought the Anthracite dial one with gold indices, by far the best looking of the range. Love it!!! I find European watch manufacturers obsession with butterfly clasps on their bracelets to be particularly annoying, absolutely no micro-adjustments and very hit-and-miss as far as getting a great fit, depending on the size of the links and the weight of the watch. Fortunately I have been lucky with the Aikon and a few others in this regard, but I can imagine many p...off customers who spend a lot of money and struggle to get a decent fit.

In my opinion a lot of the expensive high end watches inc Rolex have plain uninspiring designs which you may not give a second glance to if the brand name was taken off. They undoubtedly have high design and build quality but ultimately its all to do with BRAND recognition and snobbery. Unlike say luxury cars there is not much difference in the user experience with a watch. Cars have different engines, handling, interiors and exterior design, which lead to a different experience and desirabilty - its not all about brand..
@dainluke Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Why on Earth would you not want to give business to a brand that actually cares about the customer and value for money.
@davidr28023 жыл бұрын
One doesn't need an expensive watch and particularly if you are reading this on your phone then you don't even need a watch at all. Therefore any watch is a luxury item no matter what you pay for it. So choose what you can afford after you have taken care of life's necessities or save up if the one you want it is out of reach at the moment.
@JesseHMR Жыл бұрын
The issue is the ML ownership, the brand has been for sale for years and they can't find a buyer, so the brand has been pretty much left in limbo. It's sad because it has potential but a lot of watch fans won't touch the brand because of the uncertainty of the future of the brand this is also affecting the resel value of the ML watches. If you buy one they are very hard to flip sadly, if you buy it new expect to lose money on it when you resell it.
