Thomas Huth everyone complaining about this watch is out of their minds. The new 124060 is literally a modernized 5513. The proportions are so incredible and it’s a welcome change from the previous generation. All of the changes made were simply quality of life changes.

I like Rolex. I do not like Rolex's sales practices with respect to their AD's. For a watch that in terms of quantity are not rare, or in terms of quality state of the art, it's amazing how difficult it is to obtain one at retail prices. I guess like a lot of things, that privilege is reserved for the rich that buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of useless jewelry to even be on a waiting list with a real chance of getting a watch. Or else those who trade in the grey market get them from AD's and flip them for almost 4X retail. Pretty sure the AD's get some kickbacks on resale. My dad bought a Day Date President in the 80's, 18K gold, and got a discount on sale. Those days seem long gone.

Show me an AD that would willingly give up the Rolex side of the business? Yes the 'Professional' line is popular but don't forget that a few years ago AD's were discounting these watches to get sales. The AD got the same amount of watches then that they do now, it is just that at this point in time there are a huge number of people who are after these watches. The Rolex franchise is a huge draw for an AD, it gets people through the door, and if the AD can sell other bits of their stock to these customers then that is good for the store. AD's no longer have to give discounts to sell the stock, so now they make more money.

I agree , i have a couple of Rolex watches in my collection and like the brand but now not so . I think it's not the company that's at fault but more of the AD , flippers , and the people who buy these watches above retail ......(or if that demand is even true). I've noticed that the flippers tend to get first dibs (I have a friend who is a flipper and he always gets first dibs but I am not willing to pay his price , even with a friends "discount" which is still verry much above retail) which makes me believes that the ADS do get a kick back. I remember when I got my Dytona, the AD had them up front in the front window (all variations) , paid for it with a slight discount and walked out with it on my wrist . Ahhhhhh those were the days

Watchfinder - You missed one of the biggest changes... the addition of anti-reflective coating to the base of the crystal. That's why in the side by side, the new one is darker than the old. Subtle, but very much an awesome and also a BIG change for Rolex.

One thing no reviewer seems to have mentioned is how much more comfortable and balanced the new 41mm watch feels on the wrist compared to the 40mm. The reason is because the bracelet is 1mm wider and the clasp is also wider and bigger which stops the unbalanced "top heavy" feel of the 40mm that I found would "tilt" on the wrist due to the wide maxi case and very narrow, small clasp.

Love the submariner owned one for 25 years and could never part with it. I understand rolex releasing a new submariner. But it means nothing to me. As I will never get the chance to purchase one. I'll just enjoy what I have. After all it is a rolex submariner.

You would be better off using your existing money to have a full service done on your Submariner so it is like new again. That is the beauty of Rolex in that they are time tested. I have a 1950s Rolex that I will never replace will not dive with it though but have had a complete service on it.

Until Rolex brings back the pre-ceramic case with all the modern, latest features, I will not consider buying a new Submariner. The 16610 40mm case was perfect; the only thing that needed an upgrade was the movement, bezel insert, lume, larger makers, bracelet, and clasp. The bezel's ball bearings are nice, too.

I think Rolex has done the right thing here. The old sub _was_ too chunky and didn't look as nice as the older iterations. It's a shame they've gone larger though - I think large watches look cumbersome and lack elegance generally. But I'll forgive them 1mm. 🙂

I was about as anti diameter increase as you could get. But after getting this new Sub I was happily surprised. The size increase to 41mm is a nothing burger. The improvements more than make up for the very slight case increase. It wears virtually identical to the 40mm Maxi case Subs. Arguably the best Submariner ever.

I asked my AD's and they told me they havent't received any yet and now they have only a few models only for showing but not for sale. So i can't really understand how people can sell these watches even with stickers on it...

Of they bought it from the same dealer then they will put him near the top of the list. They watches are trickling out. For as slow as Rolex are they (mostly) get things right and seeing the new Sub gave me a grin as the things I didn’t like were changed and for me the watch is technically and aesthetically better looking. The ONLY thing I’d have liked to have seen was a reduction in that dial text, as historically accurate as it is I would love to see a return to two lines three at most, it would balance out the dial just that little bit better top to bottom.

The 116610 looks way better imo... the new 126610 looks a lot more like all the other divers from other brands. The slight large lugs and slim bracelet is part of what makes a rolex sub and explorer at least, taking that away just makes it looks generic and not rolex.. At least for me..

The real disappointment is the consolidation of the dial variants from 5 down to 3. If you don’t want yellow gold, you can choose whatever dial color you want as long as it’s black. Pretty obvious cost cutting as only the yellow gold and two tone variants get a colored dial now (blue).

I’ve noticed Rolex are advertising 41mm cases yet on calipers are only slightly larger. It’s genius. Like the OP 39 vs the newer 41. On calipers it’s actually less than .5mm larger and .2mm on bezel. They’re marketing to a modern consumer, but on wrist it isn’t even noticeable. Genius.

Actually, like Rolex's subby, Apple's initial ingenuity with the iPhone is what catapulted them to the status they are. There was nothing like it at the time, they earned it. So now, with Apple being at the forefront, there is no business need to "reinvent". That is extremely expensive and risky. It is actually very good business practice not to wager such a large amount of R&D for nominal market increase, if at all. Can you make an argument for there being other brands that have better characteristics? Absolutely. But you can do that for Rolex too. And if you can look at the iPhone phenomenon unbiased, they are all copying Apple's first entry. An internet connected, multimedia phone with no stylus or buttons. All of them are incremental differences, touting ingenuity and originality. Haters always gonna hate I guess.

WWW. I owned that exact Seamaster, I sold it after a few months. Too gimmicky, the wave dial gets tiring very quickly. Omega have the opposite problem with Seamaster from Rolex with sub, they change it too much. The previous non wave model looked better. Who knows what the next one will look like.

The true disappointment is that it is so hard for new customers to get one :) even for someone who did in half-gold getting a steel one with the same AD at that.

There WAS a time when professionals had a legitimate need for a Rolex. Pilots, sea farers and engineers of the 1950s and 1960s, just prior to the quartz watch, had a need for an accurate backup timepiece for navigation and critical timekeeping. Rolex was a no-nonsense, remarkably accurate and reliable watch that could operate in a wide range of conditions. But as soon as the quartz / digital watch came out and especially after a few years when the price of sub 1 second a day accuracy fell to comically low levels, Rolex pushed into the luxury market, making its relatively inaccurate (compared to quartz) mechanical movements a status symbol. One of the most crazy, ridiculous, 100% doomed to fail moves of desperate insanity in the history of brand management and marketing...until it actually worked.

You hit the nail spot on. Might I add. Back in the day. It was the Day Date Date Just that were the “hot” Rolex. NOBODY wanted the Submariner. That was considered the entry level at the time. It wasn’t until the 90’s and to some extent the start of the Internet (forums/websites/multimedia) that the Submariner became the go to Rolex.

Exactly...the time and a calendar are readily available with far more accuracy, but companies, like Omega or GS, that think its the 1960s where there's a mechanical accuracy or overall quality race have totally missed the plot...THE MECHANICAL WRISTWATCH IS NOW QUAINT so you have to sell an experience, a feeling, a sense of accomplishment...that's why Rolex is King!

@Hiratio Masterson I am going to have to call you out on crap. Digital is not better and is just as liable to break and when that happens it can be super complex to repair. People have bought they fancy quartz watches only to find out down the line they cannot get them repaired any more. If you are a scuba diver that wants something that is tough and luxury at the same time then a Submariner is the way to go. You can use dive computers but if you want a backup that will work in emergency situations on your wrist that can just as easily be worn at a meal then a dive computer is not going to cut it. Why own a car when there is public transport in a city?

Having seen a few of the comments, I’m not sure I subscribe to either end of the binary Rolex are awesome / Rolex are awful argument... Instead I think they make very well engineered watches at a retail price that is reasonably aligned with the competition. An Omega Seamaster 300 is not significantly different - in terms of specification or price - from a Submariner (especially this newer version). The slow evolution of design employed by Rolex is not dissimilar to how other established brands behave - look at the way Porsche have evolved the 911. On one hand it is ‘boring’, yet on the other it will probably age sympathetically as the years pass... I do agree that the secondary market prices seem crazy - but then who I am to judge how others spend their money? I was fortunate enough to receive a Submariner for my 40th birthday. It doesn’t matter what it is worth because I never intend to sell it. It also doesn’t matter what Rolex release next as I don’t want another. I will say that compared to my other (similarly priced) watches it is still a very nice watch. Compared to what you could buy with the equivalent used market value, there are much ‘better’ options (but then ‘better’ is surely in the eye of the beholder, and the purchaser). At the end of the day there are much more worthy and interesting topics to get excited about - I’m always amazed at the adoration, and the hatred, peddled in Rolex’s direction (and towards the people who wear one). In fact, the image is the only part of the watch I dislike. Fortunately I can always pretend it is fake!

i wouldnt compare rolex to porsche, while the 911s design elements havent changed much, whats under the hood and in the cabin has substantially changed and todays base turbo models can probably keep up with the race chassis of old. i feel that rolex has done the opposite, especially after the quartz crisis, cause they know rich people dont actually look into the brands that they consume, they just get them for the recognition.

Shiranami Rei that’s a good point. Even further proven when you consider that they don’t have any clear case backs, with undecorated movements. The argument is that they’re “tool” watches, but that’s obviously not the case.

Even though the hour hand is thicker on the new model, the whole dial is more spacious and less congested than on previous generation. And that is something always to be praised and acclaimed ! Despite its 41mm this new Submariiner is closer to the spirit of the original than the old one ! To my eyes, at least !

Has the clasp been bulked up along with the bracelet? With my ceramic sub date first gen (now vintage I guess haha!) my only design concern was the somewhat bulky clasp housing the glidelock system. With another mm here and another mm there a more bulky clasp isn’t the best solution. I’ve never minded the chunky appearance of the lugs and the bulked up case or crown guards that just fits with the overall tool watch appeal hewn out of a single block of steel and quite masculine in appearance, but a bigger fatter wider clasp would bug me. They seem to have feminised the look a touch, made it one step closer to being a dress watch of sorts. Not that anyone actually dives in these ten grand watches. I say ten grand, those days have gone, try picking one of these up for less than north of fifteen these days and, quite frankly, as good as it is it ain’t worth its weight in solid gold. Next I guess they’ll be rounding off the edges and pushing it along to being a Yachtmaster and the original concept of a rugged dive watch will be lost. Mine is the last of the classic 40mm size and I’m more than happy to hang onto that sizing appeal, if I wanted bigger and bulkier I’d have gone down the SeaDweller route. Take a look at the 43mm SD, this is the same watch just a hair smaller. The aspect I’m most appreciative of is hidden away. The new gen movement. I have it in my Wimbledon dial Datejust 41 and it’s awesome. +1s per day and a ridiculous power reserve to boot. It’s a shame such a powerhouse movement resides behind a cap of steel in this world of glass casebacks everywhere. That could be the next step in the lineage. Overall it’s a decent incremental change but pushes the Submariner further out of reach for most everyday buyers, myself included. Rolex want the Patek crowd, they don’t want your business unless you’re driving away from the AD in a Bentley which is why I’ll most likely never buy another Rolex watch. And let’s be careful out there guys. You need a magnifying glass to see the changes. If you’re walking around a city centre wearing a ceramic sub then you are saying to criminal gangs there’s only me between you and a suitcase full of easy hard cash. Come and get it...

Here’s a good question for watchfinder: your advert in the U.K. currently shows an rolex submariner left in a shed etc, of these watches are really being left in these places by the old owners and you buy them for a good price why? They’ve been mistreated etc? To then ask for a daft price on your website for them makes me laugh. Lest be honest the adverts crap and it’s totally pointless. Just do a better advert.

It is indispensable for me on all my commercial deep sea dives. As a recreational diving instructor and marine adventurer for longer than I'd prefer to admit. I concur. I've spent wet time with most candidates for the "better than Rolex" award. I find the armchair critic consistently underestimates the durability of Rolex. As for the overpriced argument. I've had two, much vaunted "Submersibles" fail inside a month. Both more expensive than my trusty Submariner 14060.

The Rolex submariner will always be iconic and this 41mm iteration is perfect. Better proportions & movement. The maxi-case...well...was like a maxi-pad. When you need (want) it but prefer something more comfortable because it’s too large but had to settle...My Sea Dweller 116600 is more comfortable & better proportion than the maxi. My new Kermit 41 is amazing @ looking to add the submariner 41 (no date).

Case size is actually 40.5mm vs 40.3 not 41mm vs 40mm. So 0.2mm not 1mm.

I saw a video where a dude took the calipers to the new sub and it turns out that it’s not 41mn. It’s barely bigger than 40. The biggest change I see is the skinnier lugs and wider bracelet.
