What Your Watch Says About You: Rolex, Omega, Cartier & More. There are so many videos about what your watch choices and tastes mean. If you like Rolex it means this and that about you. If you like OMEGA, it means this or that. And heaven forbid if you like Richard Mille or Hublot ;)
I've seen so many videos on what your favourite watches means about you - but honestly - I think it is all a load of rubbish. I've watched sooo many videos on what it means if you like the Rolex Exlorer, or Submariner, or if you like the OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300. But the truth is: 1,000,000 different people have 1,000,000 different purchasing motivations. Some people love status and wealth, some people love the engineering, some people like to make informed, niche choices; while others might choose the same watch their dad wore. IT REALLY ISN'T THAT DEEP.
So these are my thoughts, and really just a rant on what your watch says about you.

I’m 67 years old. Have worked since I was 15 years old. Over my life I could have bought numerous Rolex watches. But I had a family to support, bills to pay. I have done ok for myself. I have helped out family members financially multiple times. I bought my Subdate new at an AD last year. The whole presentation at the store was just special. It was like a reward celebration for a lifetime of hard work hours of overtime, and sacrifice for my family. Every morning I put on that watch it makes me feel good to start the day. I don’t care what others think about me spending $10,250 on a wrist watch. To paraphrase the line from the Movie Full Metal Jacket. “This is my rifle, there are many like it, but this one is mine”. Other than Watch geeks and thieves no one really even noticing what’s on your wrist. Happy Birthday America 🇺🇸 🎉

The “watch astrology” comparison is brilliant. Along with the broader polarization of society, this sort of pigeon-holing is increasingly common. I think social media has trained people to try to make sweeping judgments based on a single picture or video clip. Personally, I like Omega because my dad always wore an Omega when I was growing up. The Brosnan-era Seamaster 300M with the wave dial and shiny beads-of-rice bracelet is nostalgic to me. But I’m much more reserved in my personal style, so my first luxury watch was a Seamaster 300 in titanium with the blue dial and bezel; no HEV, broad arrow hands, just clean design. I’m wearing his 50th Anniversary Seamaster GMT that he gifted me, and it will always remind me of him. A wrist shot on Instagram would never give you that background.

The main reason I wear a watch is because I don’t like having to fish my cell phone out of my pocket just to see what the time or date is. Also, unlike cell phones (well for most people anyway) you select the watch you wear based upon the situation and how you’re dressed. At sporting events I’ll wear one of my chronographs, could be stainless or gold depending on what I’m wearing. For more formal situations I’m likely to wear one of my dress watches. For working in the garage or out in the garden you’ll see me with a Casio G-Shock around my wrist. So what does all this say about me? Probably that I’m practical but seek to have an appearance that is appropriate for my surroundings.

That was a great video, Britt! As always. Will add just my opinion: "Your watch says who you WANT to be, not who you actually are." Examples: people wishing they had more money than they do - choose a Rolex, people hoping to get away for a weekend from work at the office - buy a Casio Pro Trek, people that want to seem more smart, educated and sophisticated than they are - buy a dress watch, men going after a masculine image, testosteron boost ;) - choose an oversize diver on a steel bracelet, etc. BWT, I am an engineer as well, don't like Richard Mille that much, no way I could afford it, love my yellow Casio G-Shock Rangeman, cheers!

Great video. You touched on something when you mentioned fathers. My dad wore a Submariner, and I always admired it on his wrist. When he passed away, I inherited it, and it's in my rotation. I recently purchased a new Daytona, and the experience was very special to me. As much as I love looking at it on my wrist what I truly cherish is the thought that my son will have it someday, and then perhaps his son after that. The sentimental aspect of fathers & sons - and watches, cannot be understated. As much as I love the new Daytona, if I had to pick just one watch, it would always be my dad's Submariner. The actual cash value is irrelevant.

Most of the type of people who wear these are blah blah blah is just them repeating back the marketing and positioning. I have a Rolex Sub, from the birth year of my first son, 20 years old. I wear it on a rubber strap for comfort. It’s plain, flys under the radar, keeps good time and is comfy. I’m always amused by Rolex haters or what this is supposed to say about me. I wear a speedmaster for work, as it looks a little smarter. Again, plain, classic, and again no date( I hate date complications, a pain if you wear more then one watch) loved your video, nailed it again, good luck squeezing out the baby!

“Horoscopes for watch geeks”. That’s a good one, Britt😂 Think you’re right. I know rich people who wouldn’t even consider spending money on anything but a smart watch, equally people of average incomes (-like myself) who are willing to spend quite a considerable amount on a nice watch. I can only speak for myself. It’s NOT because of social status. It’s a genuine interest in watches, and I don’t know where it comes from. In fact I hate watch snobs judging me because of the watch I wear. In such situations I always refer to the worn out T-shirt I wear, saying: “What do you think about this...?” They roll their eyes- and I’m rid of them😂

Half the video is justification of your opinion, which isn't even a controversial one to begin with (don't judge people is in no way inflammatory). Your watch says about you *exactly* what you think it does. It’s a reflection of what you like and value, just like your clothes or your shoes. Men tend to wear either very little or no jewelry other than your watch, if you do wear a watch, so it’s a big part of your personal style, if you’re the type to pay attention to that. This comes from someone who, on a regular day, only wears one thing with a logo on it and it’s my watch. So to say I have a conservative personal style is pretty accurate-and a lot of that is reflected in my watch tastes. I tend to wear mostly classic black dial luxury brand dive and chrono watches. Yeah, I have a blue Monaco, but I’m also a huge Steve McQueen fan, so it fits. I love funky, out there watches, but they’re not going to make it on my wrist, so I enjoy them from afar. Now, what other people hear when your watch is having its say about you, well, that’s completely different. Most people aren’t paying attention, so it’s really not worth it to worry about it.

Well a few months ago I came across a video where this big muscular guy who probably just got in to watches was saying that if you wear the Rolex Datejust it means you have just found new money, not very much and you are trying to send a message across and you make below 100k a year. Well, every person is different. There is no 'one statement fits all'. My dad who is a surgeon who now partially owns two clinics and two hospitals makes enough money to buy a Datejust everyday or maybe even more but he still wears his old 1985 Datejust which he bought as soon as he graduated medical school and saved up some money because one of his professors told him to get a Rolex as they last a life time. He has never bought another watch since then and wears it almost every day except for the days when he wears the Tissot or the Tudor me and my brother gave him as a gift. I can say with 100% confidence that he doesn’t give a damn to what people think about his watch and he doesn’t himself. He bought that Rolex specifically because someone he trusted told him that it would last a life time and he didn’t want to bother buying another watch ever again. So that's my take, you buy a watch because it serves a personal purpose, whatever that is and it varies from person to person. What other people think about what you have on your wrist is out of your control and none of your business. Let people think whatever they want to think and you keep rocking your Timex or RM whichever you bought to serve a personal purpose.

I bought my first mechanical watch at ~$800 from a microbrand to commemorate the birth of my daughter. I 1. Wanted a watch from a brand from my country 2. Wanted it to be an everyday watch that I could dress up or down and 3. I wanted a movement that balanced value and reliability meaning rather than servicing the watch in 10 years, I will likely just swap out the movement. I ended up going with Diver (which I had never even bothered to look at). I went up to some guy at a party because he was wearing a Hamilton Ventura and I wanted to get a look at it. He then asked what I was wearing and ranted at me because "homage watches are just lazy"and I basically just allowed him to rant for about 5 minutes about how true watchmakers don't take ideas from others. While I'm much more knowledgable on the subject than I let on, and could have broken down a bunch of his points, I ended up just saying "Yeah, I don't care about all of that. I like it." and moved on. Long story short, who gives a shit. Wear what you want.

I'm pretty much "no money". The only watch brand I have more than one watch from is Casio. The only other watch I own worth mentioning is my dads old Seiko Quarts watch from the late 70's, I inherited, when he passed away, that I can no longer keep alive as it eats batteries so fast it would spend more time getting the battery replaced than actually running. I'd love owning a Grand Seiko or an Omega some day, but if I had that kind of money, there are other more important things, I should use the money for first... Anyway, good luck with your watch endeavours.

A pal of mine is a money guy and lives in the house I always said, "if I won the lottery, that's the house I would buy." He rocks a punchy orange Citizen Tsuyosa. Me, I rock a Casio MQ24. God tier.

Britt . I really enjoy your channel, I am just a collector of cheap watches you know Casio , Timex even a few Walmart and Dollar store types. i turn the big 70 next year and I told my Wife I'm getting myself a "cool watch " while am still kicking and young enough to enjoy it. Now a nice cool watch by my standards would be something like Steve McQueen would have had if he would have made it to 70 . Only I don't have the cash for a Omega Sea master Co-Axial , so I'm looking at a Seiko 5 GMT. I had a square dial dress Seiko with a snake skin strap about 30 years ago but I sold it . Seiko is top shelve for me Again love your channel , RGW in NC

There's a saying I first heard when hanging out with my friends who enjoy craft beers (but it applies to pretty much any hobby); The beer geek cares about what he/she drinks. The beer snob cares about what you drink. That being said I absolutely will judge people who buy things (anything) for the status symbol effect. For example, the soccer moms (and dads) who buy the top of the line Jeep Wrangler Rubicon who will never take it off the tarmac. If someone buys a Rolex purely for the status symbol aspect of owning and wearing a Rolex, but otherwise have no interest in horology, I'm gonna judge them 9 ways to Sunday. But if someone is really into the hobby and shares the deep interests that make up this fantastic world of timepieces, I don't care what kind of watch they own. I met a young gentleman (college age) recently who had a relatively inexpensive Seiko automatic (I don't know which model) and he shared with me that he spent some about $250 for it and that's all he could afford. He was very interested in horology and didn't have much to start with, but it wasn't beneath him to buy what he could afford to get into the hobby. I enjoyed my conversation with him. never once judging him for his inexpensive timepiece (which, btw, still looked fantastic). I'd rather talk to someone who truly enjoys the hobby regardless of what they wear on the wrist than with someone who buys an expensive watch simply to show off their wealth and exclusivity.

This is just a perfect rant! I have a Longines Evidenza which I wear daily, but I also enjoy wearing my weird little small watch house French watch. (A Depancel automatic with a calender.) Overall, I concur with her rant, especially with the notion of a wide variety: we should all be able to love unique and beautiful watches of all kinds.

I bought my first Rolex at 18 (1988) Seadweller 4000. I was scuba diving and wanted the best. Not from a rich family I saved up all my commission for 2 years in a camera shop I worked for and walked into the shop Hettich in Jersey and bought it cash £926 then. When you could just walk in and buy the watch you wanted in the window! I have a decent collection today with a mixture of brands including a lot inexpensive watches. I feel just as good wearing my Rolex or Casio. I just find them interesting. I now look at car boots and if something looks unusual ( not necessarily valuable) I add it to my collection. I currently buy old vintage divers from the 60s and 70s obscure French or Swiss brands. Inexpensive but historically interesting ( well to me anyway)

Anyone who has passion about anything is blessed. Any hobbies, any interests, any obsessions make life fun. I feel sorry for the person who can’t enjoy a round of golf with his buddies, discuss his latest timepiece purchase and favorite KZbin channel. Lean into those interests! What my watch says about me is that I am one of the lucky ones who has an appreciation for life.

Thanks Brit - finally someone said it. We all now have a platform to share our opinions (as I am right now) but all too often people go down the negative route, and judge them based on their own preconceptions. This isn’t exclusive to watches - it’s everywhere and I for one hate it. I hope that as time goes on and internet communication matures, we all become a bit more accepting of each other

P. J. O’Rourke (RIP) claimed that based on his experience visiting dangerous countries, the safest person as a guide is someone who wears an expensive watch. Wearers of cheap watches are probably fanatics, he said, and could get you into trouble. My Dad bought an Omega Seamaster in Switzerland when I was 3. Twenty years later he’d never ever had it serviced, it was getting unreliable and he got a quartz Tissot and let me have the Seamaster. I had it cleaned and lubricated… the watchmaker said it had been run without lubrication for a while and many parts needed replacing. It ran poorly for me. If it hadn’t been stolen when my house was burgled I probably would’ve eventually spent serious money getting it to work properly, money permitting. Instead I got a radio-synch Seiko…

Also, you only see one watch from a person’s collection on their wrist at a time. I enjoy my quartz Tag as much as my Nomos automatic. I enjoy my trendy PRX as much as my quirky vintage Tudor.

I like this video a lot! People often assume I wear a PRX because I want a Royal Oak when in fact, I personally don't like the Royal Oak. The watch that got me into watches was the Autodromo Group B and after wearing a few seiko's with faulty movements I wanted a swiss movent and this one reminded me of what got me into watches. Love my PRX!

The whole old money and quiet luxury “discussion” on KZbin was kind of amazing. Half of it came out of Succession, which mostly seems to imply a lot of people did not understand Succession. And I’ve personally met billionaires into watches and they were all over the place. One of them seems to want to make every single watch brand sponsor his sailing adventures, one at a time. And it works.

I think watches say a lot about a person. But if we're talking about Rolex, then not so much. I always say that whenever I see a Rolex, I only (generously) expect them to be "watch people" half the time. Also Cartier, but I give Cartier more leeway since it's up front about striving to be fancy and from the "Jeweler of Kings and King of Jewelers", and not some nonsense out of date "luxury tool watch" spiel. Nowadays I think that's a more accurate description of Tag Heuer, and probably still Omega. If I see a Reverso/JLC, or Glashutte, or Lange, or IWC, or Zenith, and so on, I'm not going to question whether or not they're "watch people".
