Hot take: Longines > Tudor Cold take: Rolex salespeople are truly weird, and I have zero urge to buy one from an AD, just because it's all facade and superficial nonsense. it's just a watch and --as important as they are-- I hate how Rolex impacts the watch community.

Most Rolex ADs are jewellers that are also ADs for other brands. The only difference for them is that demand for Rolex is far higher than others brands and some ADs use that to leverage sales of jewelry or watch brands they can’t turnover.

Hot take, the omega seamaster 300m on a rubber strap with gold bezel is low key the most stunning diver on the market

A Seamaster 300m off it's (appalling) bracelet is a nice watch, it's a terrible dive watch cause the bezel is verging on unusable at all and is completely unusable in gloves, but it is a lovely watch at a decent price point (NTTD model excluded, £4k extra for a titanium case and solid caseback with some fake military numbers on!).

I'd definitely take my Hublot Classic Fusion King Gold Titanium 45mm over any Omega. Omega has a great calibre but the brand generally bore me to tears. The Hublot is an extraordinary design, absolutely gorgeous, has a dial that rivals Grand Seiko and the Hublot 1112 caliber is highly modified with a sensual feel and workings. The fusion of straight lines, angles and curves, gold, titanium, alligator leather and rubber and elegant and industrial is stunning. Omega is a nice tool watch.

I love my classic fusion, it wears so well, it’s very comfortable and the rubber strap and clasp is one of the best I’ve ever tried. I wouldn’t pay retail but at a good discount it’s a nice watch, the finish on the titanium case is decent as well. I also tried the unico on recently and that’s a nice watch, over priced yea but again with discount a decent buy.

The roadster is a great watch, they can be had for 1/2 the price of a santos……a great entry into Cartier and the design of the case is amazing and it’s so comfortable. I wouldn’t say it’s the best though, but it is great.

No watch is worth 10k or above? Well, I agree to a certain point. Yes many pieces have an artificialy marked up prices but others like F.P Journe aren't even watches, they're art. So the statement dosen't hold ester. But, value depends on the buyer, the watch community is diverse and there is something for everyone. Wear what you enjoy ppl!

You could also define value in terms of working person hours to make it I suppose. In that case, there are definitely some really high-end, handmade watches that are worth >10K. But very few mass market watches are really worth that amount.

half of all the non-microbrand watch companies have more heritage than rolex. 2/3 of all the non-microbrand watch companies have more innovations than rolex. but rolex is rolex because it has, through successful marketing, artificially inducing scarcity to manipulate 2nd hand price and other means, positioned themselves to be more desirable than most of those brands with richer heritage and better innovation. seiko does have more heritage than rolex. seiko even has way more innocations than rolex. but toyota having longer history than ferrari and a toyota prius having more seats as well as a more complex drive train (plug-in hybrid) than a ferrari 488 doesn't make people perceive toyota as the more prestigious brand.

@@jpdemer5 gs still has a long long way to go if they want to catch rolex. the vast majority of gs models still lose value when you sell it on. a lot of people (particularly hardcore watch snobs and people who know next to thing about watches) still don't bat an eye because there's "seiko" in the name. gs is a long way off from gaining the level of prestige of rolex, even though they are one of the "way more innovative than rolex" brands i mentioned. i have an even better example: zenith. rolex daytonas got its fame because zenith was the original movement maker for them. but now, even with el primero's 10bps movement +1/100s chronograph and a third to half the price of a daytona, people still only want a daytona. that's luxury goods in a nutshell. brand prestige first, everything else is secondary.

Re IWC: Calibre Corner says the 32111 s a COSC version of the Baume & Mercier Baumatic, which is the base powering other Richemont calibres such as the Cartier 1847 MC and Panerai P.900. The movement is made by ValFleurier and is owned by Richemont like IWC. So it's in-house as far as Richemont's house is concerned. One of the best Cartier models is the Tank Cintrée. Slim and elegant. Sadly only available as a special order - or vintage if you have a lot of spare cash.

OK, you asked: 1. Lume is a party trick. It almost never matters IRL. 2. WR > 10 ATM is irrelevant. 3. PR doesn't matter if you rotate >5 watches. 4. Any unused watch that sells for more in the secondary than primary market is by definition underpriced - especially Rolex.😂

My two hot takes: 1) Having to "build a relationship with your AD" or even waiting more than 2 weeks to buy what is - objectively speaking - the most common luxury watch in the world (Rolex) is stupid, and will lead to a decline of the brand's value over the coming 2-3 years. 2) If the Cartier Clé came out today, it would be lauded as the best release of the year.

To defend my hot take slightly here: 1. IWC watches are regulated from +0 to +7s/day. If outside of that, they’ll readjust for you. 2. The entire point of the Ingenieur is the case and the bracelet and I guess the dial design. I was with you on the “it’s overpriced” train until I tried one on, and side by side with the prior integrated sports watch Ingenieur reference to boot. You know when you try on a Royal Oak and it’s like wearing a piece of fabric on your wrist? It’s not that, but heck it’s a long way down that road. 3. Comparing it to the Rolex watches you did I don’t think is entirely fair, since a better comparison for the Ingenieur would be an updated, mechanical OysterQuartz. It’s just a very different thing. 4. I still think you’re aces, though. ❤❤❤

Hot take. The Rolex Sub has a ridiculously large clasp. I know it's a glide lock but if GO can make a smaller clasp and on the fly adjustment (without taking it off), Rolex should as well.

Plenty of watches are worth $10k, the gold in any solid gold watch is going to be $5k scrap value for starters. And you can't replicate the experience with a watch that just looks like it can play the part, be it homage, fake, or just a nice watch that cost £2k or so. For example as anyone who has worn one knows, wearing a gold Submariner, the wearing experience is very different, my steel Sub weighs ~148 grams with 12 links, a full gold (either a Smurf or a full yellow gold 11/126618) is near double that at around 280 grams. You can't ignore or forget the fact you have nigh on 1/2lb of gold watch on your wrist. It feels different, it makes you feel different, it moves differently, it looks different. Also unless you are very wealthy by normal western standards you really can't ignore the fact you have £35k+ or so on your wrist and it stands out quite a lot. I don't know if that feeling is good or bad, or desirable or despicable but it is there.

My “hot take” on the IWC hot take is simple: if the IWC were priced lower that it is, fewer people would buy it. There ARE people who’s primary consideration for a watch selection is the high price. Paying MORE is a vanity statement. (“I have MADE IT! See?”) Paying more separates them from us, the mid-tier and low-tier rabble of watch collecting. 😎⌚️🍸

Have the IWC black dial ingenieur. It is beautiful, stunning on the wrist, and sits beautifully. The movement is more than appropriate. Rolex is a fair comparison, you just cant buy on, and after market is far more expensive than a genta design trinity piece. As whole it is worth it

The iwc is hefty indeed and you do pay for the design. I wouldn’t compare it to Rolex though. Compared to other genta design from AP and Patek it is actually reasonably priced. But still pricey. I prefer my portugieser over the ingenieur to be honest. Both design and price.

I cannot fathom why KZbinrs want you to listen to bezel clicks. And Backplay? I have about five dive watches. I NEVER turn the bezel. I mean NEVER. I don’t time my showers. I don’t deep sea dive. In fact I take my watch off to jump in the pool. I am, like most of you, a DESK diver. Ok, I can understand bezels that do not line up properly. That irks almost as much listening to a guy broadcast bezel clicks.

Hot take; dive watches are never appropriate to wear with suits, black tie, white tie, and formal occassion. Kinetic watches are as reliable as solar watches. People are just too lazy to shake it. Or have too many watches.
