I am actually starting my watch collection off with a longines, spirit zulu time with true gmt. It makes me very happy to see that the brand is in that range after a lot of pondering.

That Longines may also be the watch you wear while you spend your money on travel instead of a watch "hoard". The Zulu time GMT is a good travel watch. Add a Casio G-Shock to wear while rafting, parachute jumping or skin diving and you're all set. If I could start again I would buy a couple great pieces, a G-Shock beater, and leave it at that.

I've been thinking about this topic myself lately; how would I do things differently if I knew then (when I started watch collecting), what I know now. The main for me is: a couple watches is fine, don't buy too many watches too quickly -- buy a solid daily you can dress up, and buy something you can beat around in the field. After a while, save money to upgrade the daily to a luxury watch if desired. This time between purchases will give you space to figure out your taste/ preferences, and even whether upgrading is what you want (maybe the connection / memories with your first daily isn't something you want to replace just yet). That in mind, it is nice to have a grail to aspire to. But that's where I am at in my watch collecting journey. (not saying that I regret any of the purchases I've made over the years, but that I have found contentment with just a couple of watches).

Many people collect things. My father collects stamps, coins, and fine luxury pens. My mother…orchids, jewelry, purses, shoes, etc. My friend collects guitars. Another friend collects motorcycles. Jerry Seinfeld collects Porsches. Jay Leno…all sorts of automobiles. So there’s nothing “crazy” about collecting watches. 35 years ago, I used to collect Seiko Mickey Mouse watches which started my love of watches. Now I collect other things. It just so happens that watch collecting is an expensive hobby. I bet the majority of us watching your videos are watch collectors too. You’re fine.

If I were to start over, the first watch I'd add to my (now empty) collection would be the Tudor BB58 GMT. It's on the high end of the mid-priced watch category, but it is so much watch for the money. At the current market prices, I would probably skip Rolex this time around,. While the Oyster Perpetual is a great watch it isn't worth the wait time or after market price. Longine, Tudor, Oris... there's a list of great options for that same style watch at less than half the Rolex cost.

Okay I'm sooooo not on your budget. 40% of my "collection" are Casios. But I wear them! I love this video because it shows me where I could go based on what I already like. Thank you for that! Also it shows me that my GADAs need a LOT of "Tool" watch qualities, so that's an interesting thing to know about myself. As always, a lot of good advice and now I have much to consider.
@kaiwilliams1418 сағат бұрын
I started wearing watches in the 7th grade so I would start with a g shock 5600 and later get the 5610u with all the functions and solar. I think every collection needs a g shock, there's no watch that is tougher and if you do anything remotely sweaty, dirty, or with risk of impact or scratches, the g shock can handle it. Then once i graduated high school I'd try for some kind of GADA watch with a white dial. Then I'd go for a nice microbrand sapphire and ceramic bezel diver after graduating college.
@takethecurseOFFwashingmachine11 сағат бұрын
I love this list, and it’s a great thought process to build a theoretical collection. I would however make one change. I would exempt the g shock from the tool watch category, and instead pick one of the other choices. I would then buy a gshock in addition to the three watches selected. So we would end up with a 4 watch collection. One from each three categories, plus a gshock…..I say this because for me, on a day to day basis I don’t wear my gshock for that long. I use it for purpose, working out, construction, beach with heavy sunscreen, etc. Outside of that I would rather wear a non digital tool watch. But that’s just me

Start with something that will 1. Wear well with a decent chunk of your wardrobe 2. Is part of the story you want to tell about yourself I picked a relatively slimmer black GMT because I liked the looks, it plays well with most of my wardrobe and it's part of the story I tell myself about who I am as someone who is fortunate enough to travel frequently and have family everywhere in the world

This year I took this advice and downgrade my collection to only 3 "vintage" watches, something in the same way you recommended in this video. And I ended up with something I really like and enjoy to dress up or down regardless of occasion. I expect this will slow down my spending and help me look for other options in the future, my collection for 2025 and onwards is: Daily: G-Shock GAB-2100-1A. Tool: Omega Seamaster 300m 36mm ref. 2551.80 (I have a tiny wrist lol). Dressy: Omega Constellation 1959 ref. 14393 Happy Holidays!

What an inspired topic! Also me thinks we're of the same mindset. I capped my budget for these mechanical wonders at $3500us. And... I've been enjoying swimming in the microbrand pool for the last3 years. $3500 came from my last big purchase. My Longines Spirit 42 Blue sunray dial and the date at the 3 o'clock, chopping the "3" indices... ...which i love btw. Premiere package! Fun stuff. It grail for my budget. And i never thought I'd own a chronometer rated timepiece. For me, it was a very extravagant purchase and I will never sell my Longines. So that's my budget. And of course you can buy a lotte micro brand watches that are awesome, like jodie's origin and my m d design from ireland which is also a regulator watch. And...... i think I would really enjoy owning and wearing a Cartier Santos, de Cartier !!!!! Pre-owned $5500 us. And I think it's a real beauty, and I would wear the carp out of it. ...what's a job to do ??? Time start putting a little extra i n the "ole cookie jar". Love your show. Be well. Carl

I always wonder what these watch collectors do for a living. These people casually drop gems like “this Omega is a must-have, it’s so cute!” Man, I wonder how a Brit on a monthly wage of £4,000 (which is actually a good salary for an engineer in the UK, for instance) can walk into a store and buy an Omega or a Rolex that’s worth 1/5 of their annual net income. As for me, I have a Tissot PR50 (34mm) that I bought in 2004 and it still works today, and that’s it. The rest of my money I spent on diapers, schooling, and a car.
@BrittPearceWatches3 сағат бұрын
Oh gosh - I totally hear you! SO! There are several different answers for this - and everyone's answers are different and unique to them. Answer 1. There are many more income streams than just ones monthly income. (Investments, family money, etc.). Also related to this: what are people's outgoings? Maybe they early £4K/month, but inherited their house from their family, or own their home. So, buying an expensive watch isn't the same financial burden. 2. A lot of people sell watches to buy other watches. So, to buy that £4,000 OMEGA, perhaps that person sold a few Seiko's or other things in the collection, on top of some savings. Maybe they made £2,000 from selling watches and saved £2,000. 3. For people who see this as a hobby, many people save for years to buy a certain piece. For example, I recently bought something for around £15,000. But I saved FOR YEARS FOR IT because it was something I really wanted and it meant a lot to me. There are many different avenues that afford people watches, and I, personally am slow to judge. We don't understand people financial worlds - and honestly - it's none of our business. ;) I buy what I love, when I can afford it! And that mostly what others are doing too.
@BrittPearceWatches2 сағат бұрын
...... Also... Some people just have ridiculous money lol! Like... There are people buying Richard Mille's for fun. It's hard to wrap my head around some of the wealth in this hobby. (And since this comment is UK specific - maaaan, it is tough to wrap my head around how stagnant wages are vs. the cost of living. A SQEP engineer should take home WAY more than £4K/mo. with the current cost of living in most of the country. BUT I DIGRESS!)

Too many people buy too many sports watches. They are all basically the same black or white dialed watch with reliable but uninteresting movements with overinflated and manufacturered stories. There is a real temptation to make the halo piece the dress watch, but with less people working in offices these days, you may not get value from it and you can get great looking dressy pieces for little money. And if you are thinking about a piece to hand to your kids, do they want a watch that you hardly ever wore? I didn’t do this, but if I were to impart my little knowledge and experience, I’d say focus on a good daily. Something you can learn to strap hack to dress up and down. Something you aren’t worried to wear. And then see where the ride takes you. And ignore all the pressure to “upgrade”. Look for something interesting, not something praised that everyone buys.

Here is the problem with dress watches for me: I spend a lot of time in Viet Nam. The humidity makes quick work of leather straps. Steel sports just has an easier time surviving sudden rainstorms, and brutal humidity. The climate you live in matters a lot on this topic.

The blue matches more of my wardrobe and I like blue. The green is really nice too.

If I should start collecting again, I wish I was more knowledgeable about movements before purchasing my first watch.

First comment! Watch addict? Naaa! I'd love to see you show more dress watches with Cathedral hands. Their design just screams history.

anyone knows a good secondary market store where i can buy some watches?

Yes, for a dress watch, it should be time only and maybe a turbillion. That's where I am now.

Vintage IWC try Mark XV and also vintage Smiths W10 and Everest PRS 25. Great alternatives for the Rolex Explorer or Perpetual and under the radar with more history.

I find this video completely incredible at 1:32 - how can rum and raisin ice cream be in any top ice cream flavours list? I demand answers! :)

As you’ve said yourself in other videos: 2254.50 is all the watch anyone will ever need (also the cilantro thing is apparently genetic - Mexican/Thai restaurants must be a nightmare for you though…)

I would buy a 80’s F1 Tag and a NOMOS. 2-n-done.

Britt-I suppose one reason you are gravitating toward dress watches is they tend to be smaller and thinner than sport watches, so your wearing experience is more comfortable-blame it on those dainty gringa wrists!! I think the OP, pink Nomos, Tudor BB54 and Cartier look best on you. And…your Daytona and Speedy are iconic. Great channel and Happy Christmas!
