In a trench not too far away, J.R.R. Tolkien was writing the very first inklings of The Lord of the Rings.

though I think he may have denied it, it seems pretty obvious that parts of the books were inspired by the events of WW1 and WW2... the most chilling and memorable part of this film, the very accurate depiction of No Man's Land, a wasteland full of rotting corpses between the trenches, in particular recalls the Dread Marshes from Lord of the Rings.

My grandfather passed in 2006 when I was 11, but I distintly remember him reciting a memory to me of 1917 aged 3 when he and his mother received a telegram to say my great grandfather had passed on the front lines (aged 45). He said it was a foggy / smoggy day, and he remembered sitting on a wooden chair in the corner of the kitchen over a stone floor and his mother was cooking over a cast iron victorian cooking range when they got the knock on the door. Naturally he didn't realize the significance of the events at that age

Moments before disaster: "I love Blake..."
@PowerDiva
@PowerDiva 2 ай бұрын
Scofield had a lot more experience on the battlefield than Blake. He's a bit wiser, which is why he wanted to just put the German out of his misery while Blake thought they should help him. I think in Blake's mind, because they saved him from the burning plane - he'd never hurt them. Because Blake would never hurt anyone who showed him that kind of mercy. But wartime mentality is different and this shows how naive Blake still was to that.
@d.jparer5184
@d.jparer5184 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely absurd scene! Blake should have been right about how the German would treat him. Its just unlucky that they decided to help the one German pilot who turned out to be a psychopathic murderer who valued killing for its own sake above even his own life. In reality this is just the director playing fast and loose with reality. He has a story that he wants to tell and he is willing to make up whatever he needs to to tell it, regardless of the films lack of historical realism. Screw the real history, screw common sense, screw the men who actually fought in the war and screw every single German too. Its like a child wrote this film with a child's understanding of war.
@PowerDiva
@PowerDiva 2 ай бұрын
@d.jparer5184 The director based this film off stories told to him by his grandfather. While I'm sure some events were embellished for effect, the basis of them were rooted in reality. Recounted by someone who was there. It seems like you just have an opinion you want to give and you're willing to share it regardless of reality or knowing the history behind this film.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the running scene at the end never fails to make me emotional. In case you don't already know, J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote the LOTR books, and C.S. Lewis, who wrote Narnia (which you should definitely watch if people haven't already suggested it), were both involved in WWI and lost friends in the war. Their experience heavily influenced their writing, and you can see echoes of it in both series

One of the reason for the crazy casualties during WWI was due armies for the first time had modern tech such as tanks, machine guns, war planes, chemical weapons, etc., while still using the military tactics of previous generations--basically sending large forces of people toward each other. Please correct me, if I'm wrong, but I believe these rules didn't exist during WWI. Wasn't it in 1949, 4 years after WWII, the Geneva Conventions established these rules of war? So, legally in 1917, it wouldn't have been a war crime, because it simply didn't exist as a legal standard. At the start of the war pilots were considered heros even if they were the enemy, flying was still new. Enemy pilots were often helped early on when they crashed. As the war went on and the novelty of flight wore off they were captured or killed like everyone else. I like to think he was naive and liked pilots and flying and that's why he saved the pilot, but he was probably being just a good person. Also the Red Baron was buried with full military honors by the French when he was shot down.

There's no way a real WW1 german pilot would have acted like that. It guess its just unlucky that they decided to help the one German pilot who turned out to be a psychopathic murderer who valued killing for its own sake above even his own life.

Look for a movie about Argonne Forest in France. amazing movie i forget if its just named after the forest in WW1. i saw it once and prolly the best most realistic WW1 film i have watched that wasnt a direct movie made in the war
