Watching a Medivac from the Spa & an Interesting Last Night on the NCL Breakaway

Our last day on the Norwegian Breakaway is coming to an end… so sad! So we decide to spend it relaxing in the spa. We do have a spa balcony so we need to make the most of that thermal suite on the last day. So we are laying on the nice padded loungers and Jason notices a plane keep flying by and close to our ship. A while later a Coast Guard helicopter shows up. The helipad is located on the bow of the ship which is right in front of the spa! We had never seen a medivac being performed before so we were all a little fascinated. The helicopter hovered and lowered down and Coast Guard medic and a basket… then it flew off. It was gone for about an hour and came back to do the pickup. The ship’s physician came up to the spa to watch the procedure with us but could not tell us what had happened. From our best understanding, it was a crew member who was injured in the galley. We determined this because there was an emergency in the galley just a few hours earlier. It was an interesting experience and we hope whoever it was, that they were ok!
After the spa excitement, we got dressed and went to dinner at Savor. We started our cruise with our first meal at Taste and had not yet been in Savor so we thought this would be the best way to end our adventure. We did call it an early night because I wasn’t feeling well (turned out I had food poisoning) and went back to pack and watch as we sailed into the Mississippi River at night.
This has been an amazing first cruise with Norwegian and definitely will not be our last! We hope you have all enjoyed this vlog series and will stick around for our next adventure!!

Being former Navy and now Air Force, I can give you a bit of a rundown with what went on; 1. The helicopter was a US Coast Guard MH-65 (called a Dolphin), probably out of Galveston CG station. 2. Initial person being lowered would have been a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer, who is a highly trained medic and responsible for patient care during a medivac. 2. The basket that was lowered is a called a Stokes Litter. 3. When the helicopter departed, it likely left to go get gas because it's only got about a 90 minute flight time on a full tank. This accounts for why the Doctor said it could only hover for three minutes; hovering uses more gas, but the crews are always calculating fuel burn, which explains why they stayed a little bit longer (perhaps they had a good tail wind) before it had to leave. All of this would have been pre-briefed before the crew even took off from Galveston and the Swimmer would have a radio with him to talk to the crew and the other aircraft when the helo departed (giving patient updates, etc). 4. The other aircraft that was circling (probably a USCG C-130) would have been acting as the On Scene Commander, directing assets as necessary, and radio-relay for the helicopter because once it gets low enough on the horizon, it can't talk to anyone ashore. It would also be first on scene in the event that the helicopter crashes and the aircraft would have Swimmers onboard who would then parachute into the crash scene. 5. As for shooting footage of the event, there's nothing in maritime law preventing you from doing it. It's common for companies to ask you to stop because it could be seen as bad publicity, etc, but if you want to film it, they can't stop you. Doing what's asked is often better than starting a confrontation, however. Hope that adds a little insight into what you experienced and I hope the crew members make a full recovery.

Travel insurance is a must!!! As someone who has about 15 years in the health insurance industry, I can confirm that that a single medevac claim average about $10k - $15k, on the low end!

Question, so I should get additional insurance than just my Blue cross Blue Shield? I just want to make sure I understand that correctly.
@lakiiamccall3051
@lakiiamccall3051 5 жыл бұрын
@@kimmerso1 I would say yes. Generally, unless you have BCBS for Federal employees, most likely you don't have coverage outside the U.S. And even then, it may be limited. For example, I know that BCBS FEP used to have fee schedules on services rendered outside the states. Meaning, if you have a medical service that converts to $1000 usd, they may only allow $600. The rest, you have to eat. And they used to require the Bill's be translated into English, which cam be an additional cost for you. However, it's important to remember that coverage is not the same across the board for all plans. Your employer may have chosen a plan that covers some things outside the basic medical plan. For example, some cosmetic procedures or medication and surgery for sexual dysfunction. Bottomline, it's best to check with customer service. Also keep in mind that travelers insurance covers items like lost luggage, airline tickets and hotel stays that may be needed in the event of an emergency. I don't care who you have. Health insurance never covers this. I know this is alot, but I hope it helps. 😊

Every single cruise my husband & I have been on there has been a medical emergency. In Naples, Italy we had just taken off & we noticed we were going back to the port (woman had MI). Mostly we've had medi-vac on the cruises. One of the times the captain came over the PA the next morning (medi-vac the night before) & he chewing everyone out because the helicopter had a hard time keeping stable & doing their job due to the flashes from the cameras/phones. :/

Cruise insurance is cheap. Best to have it. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong but the USCG doesn't charge a fee for a rescue. That's what they do. At least we didn't when I served. Search and rescue was wild and exciting especially when you see the people so happy to see us.

Kristen Selby must have travel insurance. I cruised last year, just around North Queensland, Australia. I live in Victoria, Australia so being just a local cruise I didn’t get insurance. Big mistake as I got a kidney stone on the second last night so ended up in the medical centre. IV fluids to flush it through, and analgesia, an hour or two in the centre and it cost me over $1,000. Lesson well and truly learned.

I opted not to book originally for two reasons, one having a four year old and worried about him and his courageous outlook on having nine lives, and two I wanted to use the money to try and fly but I can't find airline tickets for less than $1K so that's out because I'm too cheap. We will drive the 11 hours and endure the pits of hell with young children and their behavior.

Loving your videos! I have a story to beat your Medivac -- Hubby and I were on the land portion of our Alaska cruise last May. At one of the land resorts I was pacing the room late at night (I don't sleep very well), taking pictures of how light it was at 12:00 at night, etc. At one point, paramedics and police arrived. I watched for quite a while. All lights were flashing. After about an hour they all left, but did not have the patient with them. Then a hearse arrived! Yes, a hearse. I am taking pictures like crazy, but missed the loading of the hearse. Must say it was quite exciting. Even woke hubby up to tell him. Of course, nobody would say anything the next morning, as I knew they wouldn't and couldn't. Quite a story for my scrapbook! Can't wait to see your Disney cruise video! I have always cruised with Princess, but will be going Holland America this fall on the NE and Canada cruise.

We get the travel insurance. And on our last cruise I am glad we had it, but we still had to pay my medical up front (cruise line does not submit bill to your insurance, you do) and are still waiting on the reimbursement. Cruise was two weeks ago. Just some food for thought.

Yes it does take a bit of time on the reimbursement but I am glad you had it since you needed it.

They can't go into foreign waters. If you are in Belize and need to be air lifted to the United States, you need this service and that travel insurance.

Any idea what the food poisoning was from? That really sucks, but glad it happened on the last night and not the first night! Great video! Now comes the long wait until your next cruise videos! 😩

No idea! Nothing tasted funny and the food was all good. It was just one of those freak things.

No offense, but I doubt it was food poisoning. If it was you would have likely had it coming out both ends, not just a bad headache. Thankfully that's all you had. I love your videos. I've enjoyed all of your trips vicariously through you. I'm hoping for another cruise in 2020, but I don't know which one, yet. I'd like something that has Port Canaveral in there somewhere, but haven't found the right one, yet. I'll keep researching when I have time and keep dreaming in the meantime. Lol

Unfortunately this was my second time with food poisoning. It started off as a bad headache but got much much worse... stopped videoing when I felt too bad.

@@EECCTravels that stinks about the food issues. If it's food poisoning or not, you could even have a food allergy. You may want to check it out so you know what to avoid in the future. Good luck on future cruises. 👍😀

We got the travel and medical insurance for our cruise in 2020 but I had a question. Does my Medicare not cover medical expenses while on a cruise? Yes we are both over 65
@EECCTravels
@EECCTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. Medicare will only cover medical expenses in the US. Travel insurance is very important and I am glad you already have it.

FYI coastguard helicopters don’t tend to land on ships even if they have a helipad in case of fire.

Perfect reason to #1 have a passport....and #2. Medical insurance.....if anything ever happened to you while onboard...a week of insurance is about $55.00..... a helicopter ride and doctor bills could be tens of thousands...and you still have to get back to port of embarkation on your dime....

I've enjoyed your vlogs on the Breakaway. Do you ever sign up for your ship's roll call on CruiseCritic.com? I'm leaving in a just over a week on the NCL Bliss for a Panama Canal cruise for two weeks. Look out go karts and laser tag! This is the first cruise that I have joined the Cruise Critic roll call for my ship. We are having a meet and greet on the 2nd day. Good way to meet fellow cruisers. Wish y'all were going to be on the Bliss sailing. It would be nice to meet you. Take care and Safe journeys for you in the future!

We have never done the roll call on CC but always join the Facebook group for each of our sailings. Have a wonderful time on the Bliss! We will be sailing on her in September.
