Did you knew that it actually wasn't a teammate that carried Messi around the whole time. It was Kun Aguero, who had to retire from football last year due to heart problems. AFAIC he was not with the team and I haven't found out yet how he managed to reach Messi like 15 seconds after Montiel had scored. You can check the footage, he is wearing blue argentinian training pants and is running towards where Messi is on the pitch.

Fun fact: The cup he was holding was a fake one an argentinian fan smuggled into the field shortly after the match ended, so it was held and kissed by all the players, it went on the olympic run around the field, and the most liked instagram picture ever, is Messi holding this reproduction cup (you can see the lettering in the extremely shiny bottom of the cup). Then DiMaria told Messi, "Hey look at the bottom of the cup!", and he found out it was a replica, and the real one was also in the field (probably being salted by a chef). The repro cup is now worth millions.

Great video, I had exactly the same sentiments regarding Maradona, so sad he was not here to see Argentina lift the World Cup. One of the outstanding memories for me of 2018 was Diego in the stands watching Argentina games getting so passionate and animated! It was so dramatic to think that Argentina beat the two teams that beat them in the 2018 World Cup in the group game and Round of 16 knockout in a similar fashion. Croatia beat Argentina 3-0 in 2018 and this time Argentina did uno reverse in the semifinal. France beat Argentina 4-3 in 2018 when Argentina tried to equalise but couldn’t at the end. Argentina beat them this time 4-2 in penalties. What a memorable finale!! For ages to come, this game will be remembered. Messi and Di Maria were simply in another league.

American living in Brazil. WC was effectively over the moment they were eliminated. "World Cup? What's that?" We had booked our Christmas break trip to Argentina months prior... as it happened we arrived in Buenos Aires the day before the big celebration. Something like 1 in every 11 Argentinians mobbed the main drag by the Obelisk. Every metro car was full of people in the Albiceleste singing. Got more than a few smiles (and couple free beers) congratulating the locals on their Estrella Tercera.
