Watching Buffy | S03 E01 | Anne

This episode is in my personal top ten. I love the fact that Buffy has gone through the trauma of being kicked out of her home by her mother (I don't think Joyce thought that whole interaction through completely, but she was hitting the sauce a bit and clearly not acting completely like a rational adult) and just having to deal with what amounts to PTSD. But the line, "I'm Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. And you are . . .?" Is just one of the best lines ever. It demonstrates that she is no longer denying who she is. Reading way too much into this, I know, but I really like this episode.

The whole Joyce/Buffy kick out was really left unexplained for a long time. Joyce had the police say Buffy is wanted for murder. Buffy needs more than some fantastical story about being a vampire slayer if she expects her mom to believe her. Buffy could very easily have demonstrated super strength in that moment. Instead she demanded her mom trust her after spending 2+ years lying every night.

i think Joyce was just making whatever desperate threats she thought might get Buffy to decide to stay home and be safe. and i think Buffy knew that perfectly well but needed to use Joyce "kicking her out" as an excuse to go and be alone to recover without needing to feel bad or guilty about it.

I love this Buffy, too. Even before the "I'm Buffy" line, we know she's still herself when she tears the phone off the wall. A purely Buffy moment!

The swooping camera shot of the Slayer at 19:08, calculating and unafraid, is one of the most iconic in any TV series ever.

I love this episode & it is one of the best fight scenes of the series. And yes, it's always good to have tissues nearby when watching Buffy.

Anne is a terrific opener to a near flawless S3. At the start we can see the haphazard amateurish attempts by The Scoobies to patrol with Oz's awful attempt to throw the stake etc. Once we see Buffy as Anne the waitress, we know she can't continue like this and has to help people as is her vocation. Lily of course was in S2 and recognises Buffy, the two of them have a similar story. The part where Joyce blames Giles for Buffy's disappearance is interesting and very true to life where people blame others for their own actions trying to transfer the blame. Buffy of course comes through at the end freeing all the slaves in the Underworld. Some great little comedy moments with Xander and Cordelia again. A great ending with Buffy back home on the doorstep, where no words are needed just relief that she is back. I think we can see the fight sequences improve immensely in S3 onwards, you can now see the show has a much bigger budget with better cinematography and effects.

To be fair, Joyce has a point - Giles DID have a whole secret life with Buffy behind her back, for two whole school years. Sure, there's a tradition...keeping the Slayer's identity secret is supposed to keep others safer. However, (a) the fact that Kendra's parents gave her over to the Watchers for training because they believe in the cause indicates that the tradition is perhaps flexible, and (b) they've already lost the "nobody should know except the Watcher" battle given that Willow, Xander, Cordy and Oz all know, not to mention Willy, not the best guy for keeping a secret. So given others know, perhaps they should have brought Joyce on board early on? We'll never know how she would have reacted under more calm and controlled circumstances, but it never made sense to me that once Buffy's vocation became known to the Scoobies, they never filled Joyce in on the secret. But certainly her not knowing - like many other instances of lack of communication - leaves a lot more opportunity for drama and comedy.

Remember Buffy's pause at the diir when you didn't recant? Remember when she walked at a rather midest pace away which was another opportunity fir you to chase after her and recant? Renember giving her every reason to think she didn't have a safe place to return to to heal?

S3 & S4 fight scenes are the best. Good stunt team. She's a like a NINJA. No spoilers but it changed behind the scenes in S5 to a more "street" style and you will definitely be able to tell.

I remember being really mad at Joyce when this first aired because i love Giles. But as an adult, I am entirely on her side when she chews Giles out. If I found out my underage daughter had a secret relationship with a grown man who spent all this time telling her she had to put herself in danger and not allowing her to tell me, that man would never hear the end of it. There’s a reason it has some icky undertones when you put it like that-being a slayer is not in Buffy’s best interest, and Giles is constantly pressuring her to do it anyway. The fact that he’s constantly telling her to hide it from her mom is sus AF. I mean, sure, the secrecy is ostensibly because Joyce would be in danger, as if stupidity somehow equals safety, but that particular policy of the Watcher’s Council is probably because Joyce would’ve advocated for Buffy as a good parent does and viewed her as a person instead of one in a long line of cannon fodder. I know Giles loves Buffy, but Joyce is completely right that Giles should’ve told her.

Absolutely! And given the secret is already known by, at first two, then three, then four of Buffy's fellow students...and while she lived, Miss Calendar...not to mention Willy...the Council's policy is already shredded. Furthermore, we learned that Kendra's parents were fully aware of the Vampire Slayer/Watcher's Council dynamic, such that they gave her to her watcher for training at a young age just in case she was called, means the policy clearly has some flexibility...

My problem with Joyce isn't so much her being mad at Giles or whatever... it's how she treats Buffy. Like I get you're scared for your daughter, but that doesn't justify Joyce's emotionally manipulative bullshit. If Joyce really cared about Buffy's well being, she never would have kicked her out of the house for being the slayer. Sure, after the world is saved have an honest discussion of emotions, keep Joyce in the loop about what's happening wrt the fight against evil, but not the kind of shit Joyce pulls.

@@claudiadarling9441 The problem is, Buffy didn't convince her mom she was the Slayer in that moment. Buffy already got kicked out of school for burning down a gym and saying it was vampires (she had no proof at the time). And about an hour earlier, the cops had told Joyce that Buffy killed another girl. So yeah, Joyce needed some proof. This looks like Buffy is either getting back into gang stuff (that is the rumour at school) or is having a mental breakdown. Buffy at the very least could have lifted the back end of her moms car up and said, "Look, I have super strength! I'm not just making stuff up."

This season is what most people call perfect in my opinion it’s great but not my all time favourite. It’s great getting some one new in the Buffy community. Fun fact, the axe Buffy uses in this episode had to be altered because it had a phallic shaped blade on it, they had to cut off before filming.

The library is busy because it is the beginning of term. A tea cosy is a cover for a teapot (with holes for the spout and handle) to help it to stay hot while it is brewing or if there is time between cups being poured. It's a very British thing but now tea is often made directly in the mug or teapots have better insulation they are less common. 19:13 That's the new scene from the end of the opening credits where she is holding an axe. I remember there being an international soccer match between Germany and Argentina during the time the Buffy was being shown. As they abbreviate the names of the countries to just three letters on the score graphic, it said 'Ger-Arg'! When Buffy 'came out' as being the Slayer, never having told her mom before, Joyce was angry and confused when she told Buffy not to come back, she never meant it. The police of Sunnydale are deeply stupid, but they have worked out Buffy is not guilty, at least not of the murder, I don't know how she gets away with resisting arrest and assaulting a cop.

I think there were three eyewitnesses maybe four, that saw Kendra get killed. Killed by someone other than miss Summers. So I'm pretty sure that got dropped. I think she's having issues with the loss of her boyfriend. Also that she ran him through with that sword and killed him herself.

Xander was the only one still in the library and concious when it happened. He's actually had to see a lot of his friends die up close and I think peopl eforget how much of an effect that would have on him over the years. He's not letting his friends die even if they hate him.

In Joyce’s defense I’d also be mad if a grown mad had a secretive relationship with my teenage daughter. Especially one that got her involved with anything that had the potential for death. Destiny doesn’t negate Joyce’s job as a parent. Keep her informed.
